M.Phil. in Music: Course Structure

The M.Phil. in Music course consists of both theory and practical papers. The paper is largely performance based which carries 100% weightage. Students also need to submit a dissertation which is of 100% weightage.

Scheme of Assessment

The evaluation of candidates, both in respect of courses and the dissertation to be submitted by them, shall be done numerically. The minimum marks required to pass the M.Phil. examination shall be 50% marks in the aggregate of written courses, 50% marks in the aggregate of practical courses and 50% marks in the Project Report/Dissertation including viva-voce, separately.

Syllabus of M.Phil. in Hindustani Music

M.Phil. in Music curriculum consists of core concepts and history of music in India. Below is an overview of the syllabus.

This paper introduces a student to the various forms of Indian music and their rich cultural history.
Stage Performance Performance of half an hour on a choice of Raga. The Ragas may include – Rageshwari, Yaman, Nand, Malkauns, Jaunpuri, Bhairav etc. This is a part of the practical aspect of the course and requires a student to display their practical knowledge of music.
Research Methodology Research and its definition , Verities of Research , Scope & Importance of Research in Indian Music , Process of Research Methodology , Selection of Research topics , Methods of Research , Synopsis , Bibliography , Questionnaire , Index , Foot Notes , Primary and Secondary Sources of Research in Indian Music and their importance in Research , Manuscripts and books , Inscriptions , Coins , Sculptures, Frescoes, paintings , Musical Compositions , Discs & Tapes , Since M.Phil. is a research-based course, this paper deals with research methodologies and techniques.
