RWTH Aachen University International Academy has an international enrollment of 8000 students. This makes around 20% of all students at the university.

No German language certificate is required for admission/ enrolment as the master's programs are completely taught in English (except for M.Sc Textile Engineering).

RWTH Aachen University International Students Admissions

Admission Requirements for International Students:

All international applicants such as non-EU students must complete a TestAS aptitude test, that is taken in German before applying to RWTH. The test is offered four times a year. Also, the subject-specific TestAS module as per the prospective course of study has to be taken.

  • Proof of at least 12 month`s work experience

  • GRE-Verbal Reasoning 145; Quantitative Reasoning 160; Analytical Writing 3

If the documents were not issued in German or English, you must have a certified translation in either German or English. Non-notarized copies will serve the purpose.

English Proficiency Test Score for International students

All the Master`s programs require certified proof of English language proficiency.

The following are accepted:

  • TOEFL internet-based minimum of 90 points/ paper-based minimum of 577 points.
  • IELTS minimum overall band 5.5
  • Cambridge Test- Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  • First Certificate in English (FCE), completed with a B.
  • Placement test of RWTH Aachen University`s language centre(B2)

German Proficiency Test Score for International students

For a degree course that is mainly in German, student applicants who have not obtained their academic qualification at a German-language institution` or who are not German native speakers must prove sufficient fluency in German. The following language certificates are accepted:

TestDaf (Minimum level of 4)

  • Certificate of the German Language Examination for University entrance for foreign applicants(DSH2)
  • German language diploma of the conference of German Ministers of Education.
  • Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS)
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung
  • The score reports must not be older than two years by 1 August of the year the degree course you are applying for will start.
  • A copy of the scores needs to be uploaded to the online application system. In case of admission, the original scores have to be presented for enrollment in August.
  • Exemptions for the language requirements are only applicable for degree holders from the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia.

Visa Process for International Students

To stay and study in Germany for more than 90 days as a student, you are required to get a residence permit. One also needs to submit proof of finances for one year. A residence permit that is issued to students is valid for a maximum of two years. It needs to be renewed if the duration of the course is longer than the slated two years and an Academic Progress certificate needs to be submitted.

A Residence Permit can take eight to twelve weeks to get issued and costs up to 110 Euro.

  • Cover letter stating the reason for visa application. A German translation of this may be required along with.
  • Letter of Admission from a German University.

  • 3 passport photos as per biometric specifications, not older than 6 months

RWTH Aachen University International Academy Undergraduate Admissions

RWTH University several offers programs in Science and Engineering research. There are various requirements for admission to Bachelor and Staatsexamen studies. They are Certificate courses and Inhouse programs.

  • University Entrance Qualification Certificate. In order to apply for a Bachelor or Staatsexamen program, one first needs a university entrance qualification certificate(TestAS)

International Guest Student Program (RWTH MEC) (Mechanical Engineering)

This program is designed for students in their last Bachelor year who wish to improve on some of the subjects required for the M.Sc. programs and want to write a practical, research-oriented Bachelor thesis in a double-tutor system with a professor from Rwth Aachen University and one from their home university.

  • Study format: Mid-Term course
  • Duration: 6 months(October 1,2023 to March 31, 2024)
  • Scope: 1-month courses, 3months internship, 2 months research thesis writing
  • Credit points: 30 ECTS
  • Qualification: Bachelor Degree from Home university, an Expert certificate from RWTH Aachen University

As the RWTH International Academy is not a university as such, its different educational formats are always offered in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University. The specific requirements of each program may vary but the general requirements usually remain the same.

Since all applications are reviewed very carefully, the evaluation of the applications needs a time frame of about two months. Therefore, letters of admission/ rejection will be sent out for each program individually and are available in the online application system accordingly.

It is recommended that the application status be checked regularly before the deadline.
