The cost of living in Aachen monthly amounts to 861 EUR. Prospective international students are advised to keep 10,332 EUR for yearly expenditure to live in Germany. The university doesn’t charge tuition fees to its students; it only requires its students to pay an obligatory social contribution (Sozialbeitrag) before the semester begins. This contribution is not a tuition fee; it goes to the Studierendenwerk Aachen (housing and social affairs) and the AStA (Student Union Executive Committee. FH Aachen-University of Applied Sciences Scholarship

FH Aachen itself doesn’t provide financial assistance or scholarship to overseas students as it does not have the financial resources to do so. However, it guides its students in obtaining significant international scholarships to study in Germany or assistance resources.

  • DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst - German Academic Exchange Service) offers awards for socially active and engaged international students. To be eligible, the student needs to have a satisfactory above-average academic record and be engaged in promoting internationalization at the university.
  • DAAD also offers scholarships to international students who are near completion of their studies in the university. Eligibility is an incredible academic record in previous studies, registration for a thesis, and completion of 5 months of study.

Work While you Study

International students not from EU countries, the EEA, or Switzerland may only take up a job while studying if they have a work permit from the Employment Office and the Foreigners' Office. To get a work permit, students need to have a residence permit. When a work permit is issued, the legal provisions of a Residence Permit must always be followed.

To work without a work permit, international students need to follow some guidelines and fulfill certain conditions. They can work part-time for 120 full days and 240 half-days (no more than 4 hours a day). Students can also take jobs during university holidays. Another option available is to work as academic assistance or student assistant. To take this job, a work permit is not required as students only need to perform primarily auxiliary tasks. The Foreigners’ Registration Office must approve this engagement as an academic or student assistantship. In most cases, the commitment of up to 16 hours per week is permitted.
