Dr. B.S. Anil Kumar is presently serving as HOD, Department of Mechanical Engineering at B.N.M. Institute of Technology, Bangalore. With a vast experience of 22 years in teaching, he has served as chief coordinator for many conferences, workshops, faculty development programmes and government funded projects. Also, he has published several research papers in many international journals and conferences. He is a Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education and The Institution of Engineers (India).
What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?
”Providing a solid understanding of subjects and research”
As a responsible faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department, my fundamental responsibility is to impart relevant knowledge, starting from basic to advanced level of the Mechanical Engineering domain. Besides this, my responsibility is to see each of the students who have joined to go out successfully with all their dreams fulfilled without any compromise at the end of their program. Also, I take my part to guide and promote innovation, and inculcate the spirit of research among students.
How do you tend to establish healthy relations within the Institute?
”Having transparent and clear communication approaches”
Establishing a healthy relationship is all about building trust and gaining respect. Clear communication, robust subject fundamentals, and responding with dignity are some of the proven methods to gain trust and respect from both students and fellow faculty. Being empathetic and communicating with mutual respect is equally important. We work with concern and try to help our students to come out of their difficulties.
How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?
”Establishing an industry-connect and reinforce practical learning”
Recently, there has been a marked shift in the higher education sector to develop curriculum oriented towards industry specific requirements. It has always been our endeavor to include practical sessions wherever possible to emphasize theoretical concepts. The present curriculum is designed to include subjects integrated with lab sessions for better understanding of theory concepts. To encourage curiosity and innovation in students; interdisciplinary engineering exploration labs and innovative project competitions are conducted. We update ourselves regularly according to industry standards for professional academic growth through research and continuous interaction with students and faculty.

How does your institute enhance the skills of the faculty according to the industry standards?

Academics and Industry are mutual beneficiaries and need to move hand in hand in building a promising society. Being able to solve industry problems with academic research and expertise is where our faculties add value to the industry collaboration. Convincing industry partners about these value additions is a way through which we involve our faculty in corporate engagement. Promoting participation in industrial workshops, webinars, faculty development programs are some of the ways we keep our teaching fraternity prepared for industry interaction.
What do you see as BNMIT’s greatest strengths?

Personally, I see that the ability to adapt and the willingness to learn furthermore is the greatest strength of our Institute. A stable work-life balance is a scientifically proven method to enhance strength and drive down weaknesses. Without compromising on quality, the best infrastructure has been made available to faculty as well as to the student. Promoting digital literacy is a crucial requirement in the current era. We provide an understanding and relevance of education in building a robust society, and ascertain employability to each and every student. Things are changing at an unprecedented pace. Knowledge and information are critical if one has to be successful. However, in today’s world knowing how to use the available information is considered a more valuable skill. This comes with putting and using your knowledge to solve problems that matter to everyone. So, every student must elevate their knowledge base, and pay attention to the relevant skills. Be curious and ask questions, and think of yourself as a lifelong learner.

What are the best practices offered to help students gain necessary skills?
”Provisions for industrial exposure and experiential learning”
Skill Development Programs are organized as interdisciplinary programs towards development of competent skill sets in trending topics to improve industry readiness in students. Recognizing the importance of IT in the fast evolving job market, steps are taken to introduce students to programming languages like Java, C++, etc. BNMIT-Toyota Center of Excellence was established as a part of MoU with Toyota that center houses working cut sections of Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova Engines, and training with full engine assembly and transmission system. Students are trained in line with course material provided by companies themselves to enable them to explore relevant job opportunities. Industry experts are invited as adjunct faculty to deliver the contents beyond the curriculum. Industry visits are arranged regularly to expose students to industry culture to understand the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge. Department also motivates and supports our students to develop and commercialize their innovative ideas under New Gen IEDC and certification programs under IEI are organized as well.
