Prof. Puneet Chawla is the Head of the Electrical Department at Ch. Devi Lal State Institute of Engineering and Technology, Sirsa, Haryana. He has completed B. Tech. (EE), M.E. (Instrumentation & Control) and MIE (I). He has a total teaching experience of more than 17 years and research experience of more than 8 years. His areas of subject interests are Electrical Machines, Computer Methods in Power System, Electrical Machines Design, Power System, Power Electronics and Drives, Fields and Waves. He has a total of 36 research publications to his credit that have appeared in National and International journals of repute. He has also published a book titled “A Helpline for Course in Electrical Machine Design”.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Desire to be an innovator and contribute to society’s growth”

The key factors are:-

  • My qualifications in the form of a UG degree, PG degree, Training and Short term courses, and Research work has prepared me for this field.
  • I learn new technologies and develop the skills to create new innovations, which makes me a creative technocrat and an innovator for society.
  • There is a scope to learn Administrative work in addition to the Academic Qualifications at the various levels such as the Organization level, Departmental Level, District Administration level, etc.

How is the education system in India structured differently from abroad?

The educational system is vast and varied in all streams and focussed. It makes a student choose their own career for a better future and skills. Our system rewards the student in all aspects if he is focused, diligent, committed, and hardworking. There is a broad system of education in our country that provides choices for choosing the field and working according to a person's interests.


What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering?

“Education that is based on research, Industry-Institution Interaction and Training”

The Institute was established to facilitate and promote studies and research in emerging areas of Engineering education with a focus on new frontiers of technology.

The Electrical Engineering Department has conducted an Undergraduate course (B.Tech.) with an intake of 60 seats along with 10% LEET seats for deserving candidates. With the Institute being raised, the department had established various laboratories with approximately 350 types of equipment, kits and machines in the various course curriculum and emerging areas of Electrical Engineering. The department has been very successful in offering the course and facilitates the students to achieve their goal of life with success and hard work. In addition, the department has conducted various projects at minor and major levels of the course. The department faculty are actively involved in research, Industry-Institution Interaction based projects, Industrial Training as well as Industrial visit to explore the Electrical Engineering field. On average, about 10-12 such projects are being undertaken every year.


What do you think your responsibilities to the Institute are?

“Be a mentor and empower my students with industry-relevant education”

My responsibility is to provide complete Industry oriented knowledge to the students so that the demand of the Industry and Corporate Sector can be met. 

I will put my all effort into the execution of work in the right direction in performing my duties as Deputy Registrar, Head of Department, or Officer-in-Charge of various sections so benefits can be gained by the Institute, as well as society and government.

What do you think should be the Institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“To establish more Centre of Excellence and hire qualified faculty”

The Institute should have skilled and fully equipped laboratories in all departments with modern infrastructure. The Institute and department have various Centre of Excellence signed with many Multinational and International organizations. In accordance with the needs of industries, the institute and EE Department have developed and trained students.

The Institute Chaudhary Devi Lal State Institute of Engineering and Tech. Panniwala Mota (Sirsa) is a State Government Institute established in Haryana State. The Institute has skilled and equipped laboratories in all departments in accordance with the course curriculum and emerging areas of Universities.

Being a Government Institute, the fee structure of the Institute is very less in India i.e. Rs. 40,000/- per Annum with Hostel Charges of Rs. 8,600/- per year. The Institute has numerous Scholarship Schemes for students across the Country. These include scholarship schemes for SC/BC students of Haryana, scholarship schemes for residents of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh residents, AICTE Girls Pragati Scheme, Dr. B.R.
