Mr Rahul Mansabdar is the Director of Guru Raghavendra Vidyadeep Business Management Academy. He is an entrepreneur and has many start-ups under his name. He has co-founded BMTFT (Bring me that from there). His start-up has gained popularity in a very short period of time. It has been featured recently in the Outlook magazine as one of the most promising startups in Logistics. Since 2016, TWIC.IN is another startup cofounded by him and has been growing since, with over 250 bikes in its fleet across South India.

In an exclusive interview with Megha, he explained to us the essence of his college. Also, he shared with us his point of view on various aspects of the educational world.

What education provides is far from what the industry desires

I have worked in sales and marketing and my job was to sell mutual funds for GHI Group. It was a hardcore field job where we had to meet five clients a day and after that do the follow-ups with the existing clients. At that time, I was just 18 years old. 

Eventually, I realized the difference between what was taught and what the industry expected. And keeping this thought in mind, we introduced modules of 30 hours as add ons to the UG and PG courses. These courses promised to cover the skills that the industry requires and are assured to deliver practical knowledge at its best. This program has helped us in getting hold of the corporate world.

Laissez-Faire Method is my Leadership Style

My leadership style varies from person to person and also from posts to posts. For example, I would use a -Laissez-Faire method when I am dealing with our department, HOD, and Principal. And, when it comes to student, I opt for a transformational method i.e. I define goals and keep pushing them to do better at every project and assignment.

Knowledge of industry requirements and exposure to the corporate world is essential

For every B-school, the most challenging part is to bridge the gap between what is being taught and what the industry needs. Academicians even after having a decade of experience in the teaching industry may fail to deliver on-going trends and upcoming technologies. So, it becomes important for the faculty to stay connected with all the industry confederations, HR Managers, be updated on the current trends. For example – having a basic knowledge of AI (Artificial Intelligence), Data Analytics, Blockchain, and more have become a need of the hour.

Standardization of school boards is necessary

Standardization of school boards will help get equality in the curriculum level and among the students getting into higher education. In a recent conference, we conducted a talk on National Education Policy, we invited Prof. Japhet S, the Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore Central University who gave a speech stating that BCU is moving towards an electoral system of education like in the US, UK or Australia.

Vocational Learning is underestimated in India

The biggest challenge we see in higher education is the drift from the traditional method of learning to an online system of pedagogy. While this move is definitely good in the long term, the transition has instead taken a slow approach in India. 

Vocational learning is underestimated in our country by the mainstream academic B-schools. We must inculcate a curriculum that teaches some vocational training also as a part of the program. Apart from this, the University syllabus is not updated regularly, this also sometimes proves to be a drawback as Industry relevant skills are not matching. 

Student should have the zeal for knowledge 

Information is king in today’s world. Students should have a thirst for knowledge, they need to know how and where to look to solve the problem. So, I say read, write, learn and live all fields of positive life practices. Pursue your passion and you being successful is only a matter of time.
