Dr. Shiv Tripathi is the Dean, Training at IIHMR University. Shiv has 22 years of experience in teaching research and education management. He has a diversified experience in the education sector and has mentored and nurtured many students. He has published more than 75 articles, book-chapters and case-studies including six books on ‘Management Education’ and ‘Executive Education’ themes. How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your department?
“The execution and development is a continuous process”
The training department is the ‘executive and continuing education’ unit of IIHMR University. The effective executive education requires continuous tracking of the emerging competency needs for early or mid-career professionals. We regularly assess the executive training and learning needs through stakeholder consultations and surveys. The requirements are mapped into a learning outcome framework, which is further developed as a program. The focused and customized segment-wise promotion is what we believe to be useful for such specialized programs and courses.
How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for your department?
“We believe in a collective approach to implement effective strategies”
The program development strategy links to the industry need in terms of fast-paced changes in the executive competencies. We believe in a collective and partnership-based approach to developing a capacity building program for executives. While open enrollment courses are based on general surveys and consultations, we work closely with clients to design and deliver customized training solutions.
How does your department ensure the best practice of the industry?
“We work hand-in-hand with experts to create benchmarks”

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are?
“Identifying and addressing the need towards changes is crucial”
Ensuring customer satisfaction and delight for both internal and external customers is my focus area. More specifically, it is about timely identification of training needs; and coordination of program design and delivery to meet these needs. For students, we bring additional knowledge/skill focus add-on courses that complement their primary curriculum.
What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?
“We are driven by the ideology of creating relevant courses with innovative approach”
Developing flexible, relevant, and innovative programs that help students perform well in their selected area of study is the university's main priority area. To enhance the relevance and quality, we also focus on global knowledge-collaborations and research-driven education, which sets the foundation for all our academic activities. During the next few years, the priority will be developing an agile and responsive academic system, catering to global higher education needs in the selected areas of knowledge/ practice.
What do you see as IIHMR’s greatest strengths?
“There are multiple factors that help us stand out among the crowd”
Our research-focused knowledge delivery, learner-centric supportive culture, and continuous focus on developing the learners are some unique factors. These factors make us stand out among the crowd and make IIHMRU very different in the way we design and deliver our services.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced working in the Training department of IIHMR?
“Pandemic created hiatus across the industry”
The last few months have been challenging for leaders across sectors and industries. Education is also affected. The transition towards change under fast-changing executive-education dynamics has been one area that offers further improvement in developing flexible learning solutions.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
“Focus should be on solution, action and evolution”
The management education is all about Solution, Action and Evolution. While studying, you must learn to formulate and solve managerial problems. It will help you to think broader and aim for higher results. As well said, theory helps; practice works.
