Education is an area where one always feels young and energetic when surrounded by youngsters all the time

My experience with the academic field has been magnificent. Teaching has always been my passion and I always enjoy sharing my knowledge and experiences with the students. There is always a scope of ‘Learn-Unlearn and Relearn’ in Life and the education industry gives you an opportunity to unlearn and relearn for the betterment, innovation and transformation of lives and businesses. What makes it the best industry to work in is that the education industry or academic field gives you an opportunity to make an impact on the society by shaping the next generation and providing them the knowledge to form their own opinion and decisions towards the betterment of society at large, environment and country.

I preach what I practice and set an example by putting my words into action

Being the Dean in JIMS, my philosophy of leadership has always been ‘lead by example’. I try to follow things first before I ask somebody in my team to follow the same especially in areas such as discipline, punctuality, respect for others etc. I always believe in participative leadership style and taking everybody along. So, whenever taking decisions for the department, I try to give opportunity to each member in the team and seek their opinion and suggestions, which actually results in group cohesiveness and team building.

Aligning the initial stages mentality of the students with the industry standards is a challenge

Every day brings a new challenge. Administrative position in itself is full of challenges; be it designing curriculum as per industry needs or class room delivery in the desired manner for continuous improvement in quality, fulfilling the expectations of the recruiter, providing best of the industry exposure and fulfilling students expectations. At the same time providing all round development to the students through co-curricular, and engaging them beyond academics to get them equipped with the right attitude and skill set is a task. This is a continuous process which needs to be challenging in order to achieve excellence in quality education; and remember without challenges life will be monotonous!

For a person to be successful it is pivotal to effectively manage time

Time management is of prime importance. For a manager to be successful, the first thing to manage in life is the ‘time’. I always try to maintain balance between different activities and involvement in different tasks. I always prioritize the activities/tasks in hand, try to be organized while undergoing my tasks and work, and the most important is that I try to remove non-essential activities from my routine. I believe time management is of utmost importance if you want to be successful in your professional and personal lives.

We establish a strong bond with the students by staying connected with them all the time

The culture of JIMS is such that whosoever comes here becomes a member of JIMS family, whether it is a student, faculty or staff member. Relationship building is always done on trust. When my students join PGDM Retail Management Program at JIMS, they show their trust and believe in me for shaping their career. It then becomes my responsibility to fulfill all their expectations and provide them best of the learning experiences and industry exposure. I always treat my students as my family and believe me, it gets reciprocated too. Solving all sorts of problems even the minutest one, taking their suggestions while taking decisions for them, consulting them for their betterment, all time availability etc., create mutual trust and build strong bonds between me and my students. And this is not just 2 years of relationship, it becomes a life long association with the student. As a Dean, I am available for my students 24*7. There is an open door policy in JIMS and students can easily and directly connect with me for any concern, suggestion, guidance or any other discussion. In fact, I and the PGDM Retail department coordinators are all time connected to the students through whatsapp groups, google groups, phone calls etc. A big thanks to technology!

Students are given equal opportunities to participate in the decision making process

We have an open culture at JIMS, students can freely discuss all the matters with me, their issues and concerns and also give suggestions whenever required. Being one of the most important stakeholders, students are given equal opportunity to participate in the decisions taken for their betterment. I believe in ‘participative approach’ and always encourage students to be a decision maker from their day one at the institute. I always believe in student centric learning rather than teacher centric learning and also encourage all faculty and staff members to practice the same. We at JIMS believe in learning by doing approach, and therefore the students here in Retail Management program are given practical exposure in all aspects; be it Live Projects, On-Job Training (OJT), Internships, Industry Research Projects, Social Projects, Corporate Sessions and Workshops and many more.
