Suresh Gyan Vihar University

Dr. Sandhya Sharma is the Co-ordinating Head (First Year Engineering) at Suresh Gyan Vihar University. She has been a member of different reputed bodies in the education sector. She has multiple research publications in national and international journals to her credit.

When you first came to Suresh Gyan Vihar University, what was your vision for the university? Has it evolved, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?

“There is always something more to achieve than what you already have”

I joined Suresh Gyan Vihar University back in 2007 as a faculty member in the Electronics and Communication department. I remember thinking to myself how much potential this university has to flourish. From that day onwards, this university has never let me down. Throughout these years I found myself blooming with the growth of our university. I witnessed this university becoming the first private university in Jaipur to receive accreditation from NBA in 2008 and then the first private university in Rajasthan to be awarded an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2017. With the globalization of campus, digitalization of classroom programs, increment in industry tie-ups, and enhancement of research work, I can assure you the university has evolved. However, we still have a long way to go.

What are some of the biggest challenges that you have faced heading the first year of the engineering department?

“Formulating different plans for students with different needs”

One of the biggest challenges I have personally faced was to keep the young minds on the right path. Every student is a distinctive puzzle composed of pieces of personality, knowledge, and emotions. What works for one, might not work for another thus finding the most effective way to approach each student has always been a test for me as well as my department.

“Suresh Gyan Vihar University became the first state private University in Rajasthan to be awarded grade ‘A’ by NAAC council of Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2017”

What are the greatest strengths of your department?

“Well-trained and learned faculty who takes the responsibility of shaping young minds”

Without a doubt, I can say that one of the greatest strengths of my department is our set of experienced faculties. Our department incorporates teachers with 15 years and above experience in the education sector.

What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 5 years?

“Sustaining the level of academic excellence with time passing by”

I have a few ideas in my mind regarding the growth of our university. First of all, the digitalization of lectures, tutorials, and projects is beneficial for various students. Secondly, implementation of mandatory soft skill training programs which would not only better placement prospects but also professional skills. Moreover in this growing world of technologies, ensuring students and teachers are at face value is a crucial task. Thus, a potent approach towards the development of both students and faculty members by engaging them in workshops, training programs, research work, and start-ups has to be adopted.

What do you think your role and responsibilities to the university and the students are?

“Encouraging students to explore their talents and put their creativity into practice”

Being a loyal worker of the university, my first and foremost responsibility is to adapt to the new age international approach towards learning as per industry requirements. Moreover, it is my duty to keep myself as well as my department at par with present-day technologies. Being the coordinating head of the first year department comes with an authority to provide a strong foundation for the younger generation on which they can build upon their knowledge in their respective interested field. We focus on the clarification of fundamental concepts in the easiest yet the most efficient way possible. Further, we concentrate on the organization of weekly activities and quizzes to keep students engrossed. Organization of cultural and technical events to harness their creative mind is always encouraged.

Tell us about your experience in higher education and what makes it the best industry to work in?

“The opportunity to make way for upcoming generations of young and innovative minds”

Over the decades, one can observe a shift from old methodologies to a new-age approach. Though students are the same, content is the same, the delivery pattern has changed drastically. The demolishment of one-sided communication between teachers and students can be noted. These days, open-minded discussions are encouraged and the education system is becoming more and more student-centric. Students now have the liberty to give feedback regarding their respective faculty member’s style of teaching. I personally welcome such changes. Working with young minds can be challenging but I assure you it is extremely rewarding. Meeting young people who are creative, listening to their ideas, and co-reacting with a sharp mind is a matter of sheer joy in itself. Moreover, the best part about working in the education sector is a sense of empowerment. I can’t help but feel rewarded when I see, I have made a positive impact on hundreds of lives by passing on knowledge.

How do you train yourself or the faculty to deliver this program to the students?

“Making them realize the importance of communication for the best results”

As they say “Great teachers produce great students”. Good command over a subject with art to deliver content in such a way that clarifies the concepts is what makes a teacher admirable. Thus, I encourage my faculty members to conduct interactive lectures. Moreover, discussion of individual student’s performance with their respective subject teacher is always welcomed in my department. In case any problem arises I try my best to approach students with a sense of assistance.

What suggestions would you like to give to the first-year engineering students?

“Lead a balanced life”

In the current world scenario, I would like to advise young minds to adopt a positive outlook on life. Practicing day to day meditative activities to have sound mental health is the need of the hour. Moreover, focus on their physical health as well. Though both of them are related, maintaining the same is yet one of the toughest tasks in one’s life and thus from a very early age, students should always keep his/her physical and mental fitness over everything.
