Dr. Syed Samser Ali is the Principal of Gargi Memorial Institute of Technology, Baruipur, Kolkata. In his interview he highlights how the placement record of the college for the past few years has proven to be beneficial to enhance the admission of students. He also mentions how the institute is planning to increase the number of seats as the demand is on a rise for B.Tech in Computer Science. He further moves on to mention how the institute is leveraging the technology and is organizing online classes for the students. The online mode is also coming handy while taking admissions as well. He further reflects on the adamant principles of the institute to prepare students for the future. In doing so, the institute tries to match the industry standards by organizing various seminars and lectures, and expert talks for the students. Talking about the issues created by pandemic, he explains there are two major issues which the institute is currently facing. Lack of infrastructure, and direct interaction with the students has caused hiatus for a smooth functioning. On a concluding note, he highlights the successful methodology adopted by the institute to create an atmosphere where students are prepared to tackle the challenges. This helps them to be prepared for the future.

The placement record proved a strong point for us to enhance the admission rate

We generally get a 60% attendance record in the first year of admission. Due to a good placement record in the last three years, we were able to admit 70% students in the first year and completely fill all the seats in the second year through lateral entry scheme. Also, We have a plan to increase no. of seats in B.Tech. CSE programme next year.

We are making the best use of online platforms for education and admission purposes

  • From the very beginning of the lockdown period, our faculty members extended their best effort to enhance academic knowledge of GMIT students by providing online lecture notes, Video Lectures through Google Classrooms & YouTube channel. Assessments are conducted weekly and module-wise digital assessments through internal ERP systems and other external platforms like Google Forms, Google Classrooms. Even laboratory classes are conducted virtually and Viva Voce examination conducted to assess their knowledge – All on line.
  • New admissions are being carried out through the Online Admission Portal. Students and guardians in remote areas are made aware of the college infrastructure, facilities, academics, training, placement & internship etc. through a 29-episode web series, the first of its kind in India. This was one of its kind and received lots of enthusiasm in social media. We hope to receive overwhelming admission this year.

We prepare students to meet the industry standards by developing their skills 

We always believe and preach bottom up approach in leadership. All of our faculty take the responsibility of mentoring students allotted to them, throughout the year; whether it is personal problem, understanding subjects, requiring career counseling or temporary financial difficulties. Mentors always keep in touch with the mentees and also to higher management wherever necessary, to provide guidance and assistance. 

I, as a principal of GMIT, ensure that all our actions lead towards our vision to be among the country’s most admired Professional Institutes where students are trained to take up leadership positions in industry. I believe a leader needs to adapt oneself with the changing environment, and a leader is successful only to the extent the team is successful and thus, depending on the team and the immediate goals at hand. The current pandemic has caused major issues for us to rectify and overcome

We foresee two immediate challenges.

  • Lack of infrastructure and in some cases affordability of students for availing higher bandwidth internet network/ laptop, etc. for online studies which is hindering efficient learning process 
  • Direct interaction with students whether it is for laboratory work, industry visit, practical internship training or Seminars/ Projects, acquiring deep knowledge in the subject is not fulfilling. This will have a lack of confidence among the students while working in an industry.

The interactions with the industry experts helps to highlight the actual scenario for the students

We boost our Career Development Cell, which consists of industry personnel and our faculty members. They continuously remain in touch with the students to know their weakness and strength, assess them for their capability and groom them to get the best result out of them. We conduct interaction with industry experts and academicians and during every Saturday afternoon Matinee show, which is a specialty of GMIT.

Curriculum ensures to help students develop practical skills

Our Soft Skill training, Group Discussion among the students on recent topics of interest, and Internship Training for all helps them gain an insight towards industry. Also, the weekly interaction of industry personnel, factory visits, etc. help students to learn best practices of industry.
