Dr Vikas Kumar is the Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sirmaur. He has completed his B.Tech, MBA and Ph.D. from highly prestigious academic institutes in India. His areas of specialities include Marketing, Business and Management. He has a passion for teaching and grooming students and has been immensely growing since his Ph.D. He is constantly working and up-skilling himself to suit the current needs of the corporates and individuals, specifically from the marketing perspective.

How would you describe your leadership style?

“A team-builder and transformational leader is essential in today's changing world”

I have a go-getter attitude and believe in continuous development. I consider myself a Team-builder and transformational leader. The success of any institution is directly related to the quality of its faculty which needs to work towards the goal of the institution. 


How did you train yourself to deliver this program to the students?

“Staying updated with current trends through research journals and articles”

I work on enhancing my research capabilities and teaching skills on a continuous basis. From a research perspective, I read top-class journals in marketing and related areas to get a sense of the current research trends. To hone my teaching skills, I go through marketing articles from reputed publication houses such as Harvard Business Publishing, MIT Sloan among others.

How can students prepare if they are looking for admission in IIM Sirmaur?

“Work on holistic development of yourself since an early stage”

  • Students have to work on their verbal ability, logical thinking and quantitative aptitude to clear the first stage i.e. CAT examination. 
  • For the second stage, they should work on their written and oral communication skills, and update themselves about current affairs and topics. They should focus on the subject knowledge related to the bachelor’s degree among others.

What kind of student do you look for during the selection process?

“A socially and academically aware individual with top-notch skills”

  • Students should be well versed with the current industry knowledge and current market scenarios.
  • Field-specific knowledge about the area of student’s specialization.
  • Work experience of around 2/3 years is expected but even fresher’s with the zeal to learn and extraordinary grasping skills are also looked upon during the selection process. 

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute?

“Ph.D. program and MBA in Hospitality management”

We have started the Ph.D. program where fellow students can opt for research work in their respective areas of interest along with the stipend. We have also inaugurated MBA (Tourism and Hospitality Management), where the students get upskilled for the hospitality and tourism industry. They get exposure to the latest challenges and opportunities in the industry.

One of the biggest challenges for the millennium generation is that they face cutthroat competition. It happens due to the imbalance between quality demand and the quality supply of managers. Thus, one has to be completely on their toes and keep updating themselves in this world of constant changes and disruptions to differentiate themselves.
