Dr.Judith Justin is a Professor and Head of department of Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering at School of Engineering, Avinashilingam Institute of Home Science and Higher Education, Coimbatore. She graduated in Instrumentation and Control Engineering from Government of Technology, Coimbatore. Also, she did her Post Graduation in Biomedical Engineering from IIT-Madras and obtained her doctorate in Information and Communication Engineering from Anna University. Her research interests are in the field of Bio-signal, Image Processing, Wearable Sensors and Medical Instrumentation. Dr. Judith Justin has a rich teaching experience of 26 years and serves as a subject expert in Biomedical Engineering. She is a Doctoral Committee member for research scholars in reputed institutions in Tamil Nadu. Her research publications are in Peer-reviewed Journals, Book Chapters and Springer Conference proceedings. She has gained research funds from government funding agencies like DST, ICMR and AICTE. She holds a patent to her credit for ‘Design of NIR camera for detection of dental caries’.

What is the latest program that is offered on campus which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

B.E, Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering is a fascinating multidisciplinary area of study aims to assist doctors in their healthcare practices. Furthermore, the study of this branch also aids in the rehabilitation of disabled individuals. Medical, Engineering and Interdisciplinary courses, Industry 4.0 and Intelligence blended with mandatory industry and hospital internships are given to pupils. Experiential learning within state of art equipment in the laboratories helps in global competence. All laboratories are unique and cater to the needs of the curriculum. Our Biosensors and Transducers laboratory is modernized with the financial assistance from AICTE. Computer-based EEG, EMG, ECG machines, Ultrasound scanners, Endoscope, Audiometer and Baby incubators are some of the PC based medical equipment in the Diagnostic and Therapeutic laboratory for students practice. LabVIEW, MATLAB, Multisim and ORCAD are the licensed software available for them.

We provide Skill Oriented courses in our curriculum for pupils. Qualified and competent faculty, well equipped state of the art laboratories are great assets for students. Industry supported laboratories, Center for AI, Robotics, and Innovative Projects to meet societal concerns are given to students. Research funding and Patents are available to pupils from the campus. 


What would you say are the best practices in the course you’re offering?

“Industry training, internships and more are provided to students”

As the Best practice of the department, we get connected to industries and hospitals for industrial training in the region, outside Coimbatore and in adjacent states as well. Some of them are Research Institutes like Sree Chitra Tirunal, Thiruvananthapuram, Pasteur Institute Coonoor, etc. Hospital Internship Training at Hospitals like BRJ Ortho, Kongunad, Sri Ramakrishna and Apollo, Chennai are also available to pupils. We take our students on Industry Visits and Science Expos too. Our students have gained industry training through AICTE’s Internshala Programme. We have an industry supported Lab view academy through which we have trained nearly 400 students.


What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at School Of Engineering, Avinashilingam University?

“Training for higher education and other entrance exams are provided to pupils”

We started in the year 1996 and 22 batches of students have passed out. Around 20 to 25% of students have gone abroad for higher studies. Subsequently, they are placed in high positions. In our region, we have our own alumni in coveted positions under the Tamil Nadu government after clearing civil service examinations. We also have them occupying envying positions in the central government.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

Our department has updated the research facilities and laboratories from time to time. We are favoring the implementation of cutting-edge technologies in the field of biomedical signal and image processing. Seminars, workshops and conferences centered on the research thrust area organized by the department provide a better platform for students and faculty. They can learn new aspects, perspectives and state-of-the-art techniques in Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning. The Lab view academy imparts global competency to students going abroad for higher education. Our newly established Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in 2021 serves as an example for this.

Strength of the department lies in its well qualified and dedicated faculty or skilled supporting staff. Our faculty are specialized in the domains like Biomedical Instrumentation, Digital Image Processing, Signal Processing, Embedded system, Microprocessor, Microcontroller and Nanotechnology which are essential expertise needed to guide the students. They update themselves in the state-of-art-technologies through MOOCs offered by Swayam NPTEL and through faculty development programs at national level.


How do you tend to build an industry connected with the programs in School Of Engineering, Avinashilingam University?

“Provide training, cater research and innovative ideas among students through our programs”

Our department has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading industries and multi- national hospitals. We also established AVIN-NI LabVIEW academy authorized by M/s. National Instrument to provide training for students, faculty and industry personnel of the region. It also caters to the needs of research and academics. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics funded by the Department of Science and Technology supports students in training and development of innovative devices in the medical field.


What are the types of projects that students are working on through this program?

“Projects related to Smart Mask For Monitoring Lung Diseases, PPG Based Cardiovascular Disease Prediction Using AI, Sinusitis Diagnosis Using E-Nose are working by students”

Student projects are mainly focused on wearable devices, smart and intelligent systems for easy diseases and prediction of disease conditions. We monitor body vital parameters using state of the art technology. Few other projects worked by students are Non-contact patient data transfer, 3D Printed Myo-electric Prosthetic Limb, Smart Band For Nutritious Status, Smart Face Mask Sterilizer Cum Bin, Smart Mask For Monitoring Lung Diseases, PPG Based Cardiovascular Disease Prediction Using AI, Sinusitis Diagnosis Using E-Nose, Processing Of Heart Sound in PC Using USB Chargeable Stethoscope For Telemedicine, etc.
