Dr Kulwinder Kaur is the Head of the Hindi Department at Malwa College Simrala, Bathinda. She has been associated with this college for the last 21 years. She has vast experience in the field of teaching, research and administration. She holds a double M.A. degree, in Hindi and Punjabi. She has also completed her Ph.D. in Hindi and holds expertise in this language domain.

What are the “best practices” that you are offering for your course?

“Interactive and cooperative learning for better understanding of the subject”

Hindi is taught as an elective subject in various bachelor programs at the college. At present, we are conducting online interactive classes. The strength of the students in these online sessions has been remarkable. Hence, it becomes easy to interact, discuss, and provide personal guidance to each one of them. They are assigned specific topics from the curriculum to prepare assignments and share their knowledge with fellow students. Additionally, literature material is provided to inculcate the habit of reading.


What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt for?

“Studying the literature widens the horizon of the students and allows for critical-thinking”

Our students automatically develop a holistic perspective by reading different accounts of writers over social and cultural topics. Being well versed with the language helps to articulate ideas and thoughts in a better way. Hindi being one of the widely spoken languages of the world provides ample opportunities to benefit from its learnings.

This course facilitates ideas and perspectives that would help the students in fictional writing and help them become future literary scholars. The course includes various plays, poems and stories that enlighten the minds of students towards social learnings. Students are asked to read, review and write on their own, giving them a chance to explore creativity.

What is the importance of this program in students' academic life?

While the world is rapidly growing, technological advancements have been accelerated. The students are attracted more to these programs but the root of everything lies in the language. To succeed in a career, one requires a better understanding of their language, its relevance, learnings and teachings.


How did you train yourself and the faculty to deliver this program to the students?

“By remaining in touch with the developments in the field of literature”

  • By organizing various seminars, workshops, conferences and fellowships. 
  • Also, by taking feedback from the students. Introspecting ourselves for continuous improvement in the delivery of knowledge is essential. 
  • Being cooperative and encouraging in times of uncertainty faced by students.

What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?

“The major challenge is the declining interest of today’s generation in language subjects”

We try to raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of studying language-oriented subjects. There is a need to increase the importance of domestic languages in our country. Hindi Literature and writing must be given immense priority.


What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

“Projects involving writing, editing and reviewing of literature pieces”

The types of projects that our students are involved in mainly revolve around reading and writing. This includes reviewing papers, comprehending and interpreting specific readings (Books, Articles, Plays, Poems, Novels). In addition to this, there are investigation, decision-making and problem-solving projects as well.
