Subhra Sanka Chatterjee is working as an Associate Professor and Course Coordinator in the B.Des Jewellery Design program at the Indian Institute of Gem and Jewellery. He has 16 years of teaching experience along with 8 years of Jewellery industry experience. He has worked as a Chief Jewellery Designer in the New Delhi Jewellery Division in a reputed Fashion Studio and Firm. His key areas of teaching are Design development, Jewelry drawing & rendering techniques and Gemstone studies and Research-based design projects for over 15 years. He has done Certificate in Jewellery Design from Mumbai, Certificate in Gem Identification from GTL and later got a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. He has also done MBA from a reputed university.

What are your roles and responsibilities?

"To maintain and monitor processes and activities of department"

Being the Faculty of the Department, my roles and responsibilities are to maintain all communications and records pertaining to students time tables, the attendance records of individual students, module structure, assessment schedule, module assessment sheet and to develop the course curriculum to enrich the program as per the students and industry expectation. I have improved upon the frequency of feedback and interim interventions in the module to ensure and push the students to achieve better benchmarks and practice.

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

"I interact with them on regular basis"

The course team took the initiative to meet the group of students and then we plan the assignments for the entire level essentially, to gear up students for the next level. And we conduct regular meetings with faculties to take feedback and monitor the assignments. As a custodian of the program, I believe in giving a friendly atmosphere and intimate learning environments to our students which pushes them to think and see concepts in new and diverse ways and there is a never-ending list of activities and modules where students and faculties are involved.

How do you bring in a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?

"While teaching, I quote real-time projects as examples"

To ensure an industry-oriented and practical approach towards subjects, I explain concepts by taking into consideration the real-time projects where those concepts have been used rigorously. Individual aesthetic growth is visible through the students' work, and also the work presented by students shows a good understanding of design and manufacturing knowledge of any topic.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students? 

"It involves the latest programs as per industry trends"

The curriculum which we design includes programs that inculcate the required skills, and capabilities and drive value-based professional competence to address varied situations that can transform our students into great professionals. Our institute has always been student-centric and market-oriented, and it is a considered policy of the institute to review and revise the curriculum as per the developments and demands of the evolving market.

What are your views on the placements and higher education of students from your department?

"We impart the best education in Gem and Jewellery design through B.Des program"

Gems and jewellery play a significant role in Indian customs and traditions, making this sector integral to the economy and one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. How do you help your student to cope with the competitive world?

"We provide them industry exposure through various National and International level shows"

We provide various opportunities to our students to actively participate in National and International Jewellery shows as a “Budding Designer” Category. The objective of the show is to offer an unparalleled opportunity to view the largest and most diverse modern and contemporary art of jewellery throughout the world, and aimed at setting design and finishing techniques through truly multinational experiences. 

Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

Since we are a student and industry-driven Institute, we conduct various co-curricular activities by creating a strong and clear perspective about the role of a designer in the ever-changing Indian Jewellery industry. We help them Customize their career path, and the faculty keeps motivating students to emerge as individual designers with a strong conceptual base through interactions and counseling sessions.

The Gems and Jewellery sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in recent times. It has enormous opportunities for fresh candidates as well as jewellery professionals across various sectors such as Manufacturing, Trade, Retail and Design and lists various positions such as Wholesalers, Junior Designers, Freelancer, Entrepreneurs, etc.

What are the approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to teach students?

"We make them aware of scope this field offers"

We strongly believe that we as a course team are working with so many years of experience but due to a lack of awareness about the Jewellery Design program, students are not exposing themselves to these industries. Hence we spread awareness programs from time to time and I request students' Parents and future aspirants to come forward and join this prestigious industry.

Any valuable advice which you would like to give to students for a prosperous career ahead?

India is the hub for gems and jewellery manufacturing; thus, immense opportunities exist for trained design professionals. Branded jewellery is a new phenomenon in the market. Hence I would suggest my students work rigorously to enhance their theoretical and practical knowledge of subjects.
