Breaking Barriers and Making a Difference

UGI Bangalore

Date: May 14, 2021

The biggest obstacles in our lives are the barriers that our minds create and the constant struggle to break these barriers makes our lives meaningful. The first step to break these mental barriers is to step out of our “Comfort Zone” and gain strength to stand out from the crowd. Never underestimate the difference YOU can make in the lives of others.  Step forward, show the world you are not here to just pass through. Leave great footprints wherever you pass and be remembered for the change you initiated. Dr Robert Clive, who  was the Chief guest of the event,  started his talk by appreciating the speakers for the introduction and praised the chairman for his unique initiative of combining degrees with the UPSC coaching. Then began the talk by taking the example of Nelson Mandela who rose from being a common man fighting for equality to being the president of the country. He also gave the example of Mr Ranjith Ramchandran who has a remarkable journey from being a night watchman to today being the IIM professor, and talked about DoPT ministry facilitating the first visually impaired IFS officer Beno Zephine being the prime example of breaking the barriers. He then moved one to talk about the power of an IAS officer that can bring changes in the life of a common man. He highlighted this point by giving an example of a girl in Tamil Nadu who brought a toilet to her home and along with it, with the help of the government constructed 500 toilets in her neighbourhood.

Later in the session, Dr Clive moved on to talk about the difficulties faced by students during the pandemic year 2020 about their fears, insecurities and anxiety. Taking this issue up he talked about student's frustration which leads them to take extreme steps as suicide and shared several examples of this and assured students not to give up and reminded the students of their parents sacrifice and hardwork to look after their children's welfare and recommended the students to make the best use of time by taking up extracurricular activities and online courses. He emphasized on the importance of building the right attitude and focussed on building the will and determination. In his words, "The only divisibility of a man is his attitude".

In the later segment, he mentioned that we need to brand ourselves which later on becomes the indicator of our success and we need to be the trendsetter in the society. With this the session was concluded.
