Mr. Nirmal Karmakar is the Director of NIM Durgapur. He is a hotel management pioneer & has worked with many five-star properties Intercontinental New Delhi; Hyatt Delhi are some of the top-notch properties where he has worked before turning into an educationist. In his interview he talks about the treasure the education industry holds and how much is there to explore in the education domain. Telling about his leadership style, he mentions that he acts according to the situation by stating the example of the institute, wherein he transformed the institute from regressive to progressive. He puts a grave importance on the ambient environment an institute should have which helps to develop the thinking of the students. In the later segment, he highlights that how he takes out time to interact with the students and why is it important to have an aim and focus on opportunities to succeed in the career
The education industry is an ever-growing industry and holds a treasure to be explored
After the completion of my education in hotel management I joined the industry and served for around 8 years. I worked with different institutes in West Bengal and I feel that this is the growing industry with huge potential for the students to grow and make a successful career. There are lots of opportunities available since the spending limit of the Indian people is increasing as they are travelling to different places, staying at big hotels, throwing & attending big parties. Naturally there is a huge potential for the industry as the student can join the industry with a good future prospect.
I perceive the situation and deal according to the surrounding circumstances
As far as I am concerned, Leadership is a strong term. I don't follow a particular leadership philosophy but I rather perceive the situation and deal according to it. Leadership is such a type of art that attracts people towards you. Whatever a good leader says, his/her followers make sure that it's carried out. I try to lead from both the extremes, i.e - both from the front and from the back. I try to follow and coincide my leadership style with my idea of leadership. Working with the team and leading by example has always been the motto of my leadership.

Initially the work culture at the college was regressive; I transformed it to a progressive one
Ever since I have joined the NIM Durgapur, I have faced several challenges, some at a larger level and some at a small level. I will tell you certain examples so that you can relate to it. At the beginning when I joined, the work-culture here was very regressive, I made some changes to make it progressive. The other example is, in this part of the country the philosophy of the common people is different as compared to the people from other metro cities. The hunger for additional growth is lacking here. Again, to mitigate this, I worked with my team to motivate the employees so that they perform to their full potential.
An ambient environment plays a pivotal role in grooming students
We strictly stick to the guidelines as given by the West Bengal State council. A teacher can express him/herself being in a delicate environment of the education system. Teaching is a very noble profession. We, at NIM Durgapur, make sure that every faculty member realizes and gives their best so that whatever and whenever they are teaching the students something, it means that they are imparting their valuable knowledge. If the students cannot grab their knowledge there is no use of imparting the same. Thus, the environment is a very important point. I would like to connect the dots using the 3P's of service marketing – i.e. People, Process, and Physical Evidence, all three of them are a very important aspect of an educational institute. We at NIM make sure that each of them is given equal importance so that the institute, its students, and alumni keep getting stronger.
A student must possess a thirst to quench their answers
In my opinion, the students must have inquisitiveness i.e. – they should always be curious to learn new things, they should have a constant adapting approach, they must be respectful towards others, they should always keep in mind that they are the future of this Country and thus act accordingly.
An institute should provide a harmonious and a peaceful environment
According to me, the institute’s environment should always be harmonious, peaceful. We are from the lands of Nalanda, Takshila. We should keep in mind the legacy that we are carrying and stick to our roots. The institute should always focus on research and developments so that the student’s future is molded brightly.
I constantly interact with the student’s council to keep a record of their holistic development
I always keep in touch with the student’s council team to know what is going on, and how we can constantly improve our students. There is a special committee of faculty members who looks after the general welfare of the students. In a way, I am always approachable by all of the students.

We aim to disseminate quality education to all students to make them employable
To be very honest, we haven't planned to build a huge campus with world class infrastructure. Even today, a prospective student asked me if we have a gym in our college. Believe me, I was astonished. Why does he need a gym here? We plan to be a price-sensitive, no frill institute whose aim is to make the students employable by imparting the required knowledge and skills. I don't want to make this a place where students come to sit in the canteen and chill. This place will go on as it is going, to build a student's career with full devotion.
Students should have an aim and focus for the opportunities they have
Today's youth are very career-oriented.They have a plethora of opportunities but are not focussed. They should use the internet as an advantageous tool and not waste time on the internet. Apart from this, they should be smart and respectful towards others.
