Mr. Akshay Kanti Bam is currently working as the Chairman of Indore Institute of Law (IIL). His education qualifications include B.Com, MBA, LLB (Hons) and is currently pursuing Ph.D. He is holding an experience of more than 10 years in the education industry. The man of substance is a recipient of Captains of Industry Award, Entrepreneur of the Year 2016, Excellence Award and many more.

His ultimate goal is to groom and produce quality students who can ultimately contribute to the society at large. In an exclusive interview with collegedunia.com, Mr. Bam talks about his institute and the education industry.

Providing International exposure with a world-class curriculum

Being one of the topmost institutes of Law, IIL has been imparting world-class education to the students for the past 16 years. It not only provides regimen of classes with strict attendance but also gives students the freedom to enrich themselves outside the classroom in the form of academic activities like Moot Court, MUN, legal clinics, Pro Bono Programs, Research, and Internships.

Apart from this, the Institute offers not only innovative pedagogy in terms of updated curriculum but also provides international exposure. This includes visit to international platforms like The International Court of Justice, The Hague, Netherlands and more. The Students’ society and administration are working hard to ensure participation in academic as well as co-curricular activities.

Challenges faced while establishing IIL

IIL initiated the idea of opening 1st Exclusive and Independent Law College in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The foremost challenge faced during the inception was to spread awareness about the competency of a Law Degree. This single task took us almost 10 years to achieve it but the results were magnificent.

Changes witnessed in the Education Industry

The liberalisation of economy and expansion of the private sector has enhanced legal expertise beyond courtroom and litigation. Nowadays, law graduates are required to be competent enough to guide, consult and represent their client for various legal issues like IPR, ADR, Mediation, Mergers and Amalgamation and Financial Matter. This is possible only by enriching academic and training programs that we design especially knowing the industry requirements.

There are a variety of skill sets as well which are required by corporates like effective communication, research analysis, business acumen and providing service to the organisation in the form of representations, drafting and technical proficiency. These qualities and skills have now become a standard for judging an aspirant and his/ her future.

Methods opted to nourish relationship with students

I believe that the key to unlock the potential of a student is by developing positive and respectful relationships with students from the initial stages. In order to understand them and their grievances, I try and facilitate direct interaction regularly. I ask them for feedback regularly and accordingly plan sessions where they can talk to me and discuss their issues.

At IIL, we have designed a concept of Student Council & Brand Ambassadors. There are few students who are directly in touch with me irrespective of Directors, Principals and HOD. It also helped me a lot to understand the micro problems of the campus. Also, the students are free to contact me through the administrative department and get an appointment to have a one-to-one interaction.

Goals for the institute

I have always focused on raising the level of education to that of any International Law University. I hope, in the long run, the college will rise to success. An educational institution is not just only about the Academics, but also for the overall development of the students. In the case of lawyers, they are expected to have a personality unparalleled to any other professions. To produce such students, IIL is focusing on rounding their personalities, income, self-esteem wherein academic performances is a part of it.

It is essential to ensure that students are getting exposure with reputed legal firms. This will help the students in getting better internships which will ultimately result in better placements. We also plan on furthering the Moot Court culture in our college by training and encouraging them to participate in the national-level moot court competitions and if our hard work pays off, maybe even on the international level. We will try to inculcate the students for future oriented subjects such as Cyber Laws, Maritime Laws Space Laws, Intellectual Property Rights and more.
