New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed the plea to postpone the GATE 2022 exam. Hence, the exam dates set by IIT Kharagpur i.e. February 5, 6, 12 and 13, will remain unchanged as of now.
Earlier, candidates of GATE 2022 wanted to postpone the exam due to COVID 19 pandemic. CJI Ramana agreed to urgently list the matter for hearing purposes.

Today, N V Ramana has dismissed the plea on the ground that the change of dates will bring more chaos and uncertainty for the students.

February 03, 11:15 AM: SC Dismisses the Postponement Plea
To avoid further chaos, the Supreme Court has decided to dismiss the plea and the exam is scheduled as earlier. GATE 2022 is supposed to be conducted via offline mode more unless IIT Kharagpur releases any new statement. The Apex Court has further stated that IIT Kharagpur can take the final call regarding the exam dates.
“There is no overarching reason that this court in the exercise of its jurisdiction under Article 32 of the Constitution should supplant the duties and functions of the regulatory authorities who have taken a decision to hold the examination.
On a considered perspective of the position and consistent with the circumspection which must be exercised by this court in interfering with academic matters, we are not inclined to entertain a petition under Article 32 of the Constitution. These petitions are accordingly dismissed", the statement released by the SC states.
Justice Chandrachud, further stated that among the 9 lakh students, only 20,000 signed the petition and one of them runs a coaching institute.
Therefore, it is in the best interest that the concerned authority i.e. IIT Kharagpur should be free to take the final call regarding the exam dates. There is also no guarantee that the situation will improve drastically within the next one month so the sudden change of dates does not seem to be a required move.

The plea to postpone the exam has been raised 48 hours before the scheduled date of February 5, 2022. This includes several potentials to cause uncertainties for the registered students. This is especially for those who have been preparing for the exam for a long time.

To avoid COVID 19 restrictions and travel freely, IIT Kharagpur released the travel pass for the candidates. This is to help them to reach the exam centres within the prescribed time. The travel passes can be downloaded from the official website by providing login information.
GATE Exam 2022 Aspirants Sign Online Petition
Over 23,000 candidates signed an online petition in the middle of January 2022 seeking postponement of the GATE Exam 2022 due to the increasing surge of COVID cases. The exam authority i.e. IIT Kharagpur didn’t respond to the petition. Along with the petition, the candidates also shared their proposals on several social media platforms.

IIT Kharagpur released the dates for the GATE Exam 2022 and other information in August 2021. The registration process is over for the current time and the dates are set on February 5, 6, 12 and 13, 2022.
