A few city activists from Navi Mumbai have demanded the cancellation of Maharashtra Public Service Commission(MPSC) Examination for the current session due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Nearly around 2 Lakh candidates appearing for the exam mostly hail from the rural areas of Maharashtra. Such a huge number of students would have to travel to the 50 centres allotted for taking MPSC Exam.
Offline exams for students travelling from the outskirts of Maharashtra will pose a serious danger to the safety and health of the students appearing for the exam. This might also help in the further spreading of the disease. The concern was raised by Panvel based activist, Vishnu Gavali.
As per the official notifications, the Bcom Final Year University Exams have also been suspended or cancelled due to daily rising cases across the country. This has further urged the activists to demand for a cancellation of the MPSC Exam.
Another concern is that many economically backward students sit for MPSC exam and travel from far off districts in Maharahtra like Beed, Kolhapur, Sangli, Latur and others. Due to unavailability of transport, some travel days prior to the exam and spend their nights in bus depots, railway stations. In the current coronavirus situation, letting students take the exam in such a way is a grave risk to their health and the social distancing norms.
Besides this, the new recruitment procedure to various state government departments such as agriculture, municipalities, police, revenue etc. is also done on the basis of the MPSC exams, held in 37 districts every year.
Because of this certain reason, these exams cannot be delayed or avoided. Following this, the Maharashtra government has appealed to strictly ensure the norms of social distancing to avoid any public health issues to all the citizens.
