How is CUSAT for MCA?

NG
Neha Ghosh Posted On : February 17th, 2021
B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2001)

My sister studied MCA at CUSAT which was an overwhelming experience for her, as after returning to her hometown she was scared that the course was too advanced for her and she will require to take more classes to improve in it.

The other important highlights that can be looked up to are :

  • There are less number of seats probably 30 every year in order to get well versed & qualified candidates.
  • The candidates can look up to different types of courses within MCA which are MCA regular and MCA lateral entry.
  • Student Association Of Computer Applications (SASCA) is responsible for all types of student activities like seminars, cultural events and training programmes.

Is CUSAT better than NITs for msc physics?

AM
Aritra Majumder Posted On : February 17th, 2021
MSc Physics & MATHEMATICS UNIVERSITY LEVEL, University of Kerala (1987)

NITs are generally much better than Cochin Institute Of Science & Technology (CUSAT) as they receive higher funding, seminar, workshops, facilities and have reputed international Scientists. They include -

  • Funding in the institution

The funding is straight from the government and therefore tends out to be more advanced in terms of technology and curriculum. All facilities are provided in order to make it a global course.

  • International Collaborations

The NIT across the nation are actively engaged in seminars/workshops that allow its candidates to have a great exposure towards good & eminent scientists across the globe.

CUSAT can compete with NOT only on the grounds of the Physics department as it is the only department that fulfils the criterion of good faculty and advanced projects in a general sense. The major areas to look up to are :

  • They try to interact with institutions like NCL, NIIST, Inter University Accelerator Centre New Delhi, IWATE University Japan.
  • There are almost 205 PhDs and approximately 1100 publications in international/ national journals.
  • Five Indian patents have also been filed within the department.

CUSAT gives you good opportunities but when it comes to choice between CUSAT & NIT ; surely the latter will be more preferable.

How is the food at CUSAT?

AS
Arnab Singh Posted On : February 12th, 2021
MCA Computer Science & Mathematics, Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2018)

Food will not be an issue at CUSAT. The food you will get at the mess of CUSAT is similar to that of any other engineering colleges in India.

The food provided at the campus is great. But it is Kerala food. If you are from North India and habituated to the type of Noth-Indian food, you may have difficulty in adjusting. Since the food at the mess is prepared in coconut oil. If you are opting for a hostel you have to choose the mess facilities too. But it is not as bad as it sounds, and you can survive and adjust with time.

You can get Noth-Indian Food by tiffin service too. You can also find many Bihari and Bengali cooks in the vicinity of the campus. There are also a few North-Indian messes near the college. In case you are staying in a rented flat or room, it would be better to hire a cook.

It may take some time to adjust but you can definitely survive on the food available at CUSA. So, do not treat food as a deciding parameter for not choosing CUSAT.

What is the eligibility criterion for NRI quota in CUSAT?

KT
Khushi Tiwari Posted On : February 11th, 2021
Studied B.Tech from Cochin University Of Science and Technology

For getting a seat in the NRI quota at CUSAT, there is no special eligibility criterion. Candidates with a valid rank in CUSAT CAT (common admission test) can get admission in those NRI quota seats.

The following table gives an insight into some important facts for NRI students:

Particulars

Amount

Total seats

64

UG Program Fees

US $ 3000 per annum

PG Program Fees

US $ 2500 per annum

Ph.D. Fees

US $ 5000 per annum

There are two basic ways to get admission through NRI quota seats in CUSAT, which are described below.

  • There is a CUSAT NRI form that can be filled at the time of form filling for the CUSAT CAT exam. It costs around Rs. 7280, whereas the general form is Rs. 1100.
  • Candidates filling this specific form will get direct admission into the NRI quota seats. This is a process not usually known to people, and the second process is mostly followed.
  • During the spot counseling rounds, some NRI seats in various departments are found available. These seats are then offered to candidates according to CAT rank.
  • The fees for NRI seats are a bit higher than general seats and so, most people don’t prefer them. Therefore, these seats usually become available to candidates with not so good rank.

All other facilities and policies for NRI quota candidates are the same as general candidates, other than the admission and semester fees.

How is civil engineering at CUSAT?

US
Usha Saini Posted On : February 11th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology (2017)

CUSAT is considered to be a good place for Civil Engineering, considering the academic and exposure provided by the institute. Following are a few stats regarding the Civil Engineering department of CUSAT.

NIRF ’20 Rank

178

Total Fees (B.Tech)

3.5 Lakhs

Median Salary offered (Civil)

4.5 LPA

Cut-off rank (Civil)

2313

Some key highlights about the department are listed below:

  • Faculty: The faculties in Civil Engineering are quite experienced and provide quality learning.
  • Extracurricular Activities: A lot of exposure in extracurricular activities is provided by CUSAT, which is a major recreational mode and helps in cultural growth too.
  • Curriculum: The syllabus followed by CUSAT is quite good and well-framed. It is considered to be tougher than other universities, but not very difficult to grasp if the genuine effort is provided.
  • All B.Tech programs in the School of Engineering (SoE) are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for two years under the Tier-I system. This makes it evident that the degree certificate has got a lot of weightage in itself.
  • The campus life in CUSAT is worth enjoying, along with academics and curriculum.
  • The placement of Civil Engineering in almost all institutes across India is not worth considering. But, it is expected for companies to give preference to CUSAT graduates in their recruitment drives.

Overall, Civil Engineering at CUSAT is a good choice for interested students.

My CUSAT CAT rank is 1897,will I get Mechanical in the main campus?

AS
Anand Srinivasan Posted On : February 12th, 2021
Studied at Cochin University Of Science and Technology

Your CUSAT CAT rank is decent. You’ll need to wait patiently in the counseling process. You have a high chance of being called for counseling. You might need to stick to Mechanical as your first option until the third shortlist is out.

The next thing you should be careful about is that of choosing the lower options. The reason behind this step is that sometimes you will be selected for your lower options and might get a chance to upgrade to Mechanical although there is no surety for this to happen at all times. So, choose branches like IT, civil as your lower options carefully based on your preferences. Keep your hopes high patiently and wait for the allotment positively.

A word of advice, if you are getting admission for Mechanical Engineering at any other colleges, go for it. Rather than waiting around for the opportunity to get Mechanical at CUSAT. The institute does not have a good placement record for Mechanical. You will most likely get recruited by IT firms after the completion of the course. And to get core companies you will need to score well in GATE.

What are the best student organizations or clubs to join at CUSAT? Why should students join them?

SS
Sakshi Sharma Posted On : February 12th, 2021
Former Student at Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2016-2020)

If you are one of those lucky ones who have gotten their admission in it and are excitedly looking forward to being a part of the campus and everything that it has to offer, you’ve come to the right place. There are a number of student clubs or associations that you might want to be a part of once you are onboard.

Here’s a quick look at all the interesting and must attend clubs while you are at CUSAT:

ACES:

  • The most happening club out there is this one. ACES is run totally by students of the CS department and they have successfully ensured that the club is kept active and running at all times.
  • They are also known to have several technical sessions regularly and all the IT or technical geeks here at the campus are delightfully keeping the club dynamically functional.

ECSA:

  • Short for, Electronics & Communication Students Association, this club primarily focuses on the EC department and is also run by EC students.
  • Quite a popular association and also a favorite of many. It’s recommended to be an active member of this club if the branch EC interests you.

MERAKI 7:

  • This is another tech stuff where lots of stirring and nerd activities and events take place.
  • A motivational and stirring place to be on campus for all tech-lovers!

Apart from the clubs mentioned above, there’s InnovaDen that has everybody’s hearts. It is basically a co-working space for like-minded students who are interested in technical studies and might wish to pursue them further.

There are other IT associations that have been recently started at the campus. You can look forward to joining them as well.

If anyone gets selected for civil engineering in CUSAT, does he get to study in SOE or the CUSAT main campus itself?

SJ
Suyash Jain Posted On : February 19th, 2021
Studied Civil Engineering at Cochin University, 2019

CUSAT is a university that had colleges under it in the past. Now it only has colleges or schools to be exact. Which are under the main university campus.

Following are the various schools affiliated with CUSAT University.

  • SOE: It stands for School of Engineering and deals with UG engineering courses.
  • Old SOE: It deals with Grad and Ph.D. courses. It also comprises various departments for MCA.
  • SLS: It stands for School of Legal Studies and deals with the law courses.
  • SMS: It stands for School of Management Studies and deals with business-related courses.
  • Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering: It deals with marine engineering courses.

The above-mentioned schools constitute the main campus. This is not the entire CUSAT, there is another campus for the university.

Lakeside Campus:

  • The Lakeside campus is around 12 km from the main campus. It is set in Cochin city on the estuarine waterfront.
  • It consists of the School of Ocean Science and Technology, School of Industrial Fisheries, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Department of Physical Oceanography.
  • The School of Marine Sciences has a library that is regarded as one of the largest marine science libraries in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies.
  • The school has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in India and abroad.

Apart from this, there is also CUCEK in Kuttanad, also known as the Pulincunnoo campus. So, if you get selected into civil engineering, then you will be studying in SOE which is inside the main campus.
