According to placement data from the academic year of 2022-2023, the average package for an MTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Madras was around INR 21.48 LPA, and the Highest Package was around INR 1.98 CPA.
However, it’s important to note that CTCs are usually inflated highly and include joining bonuses and stock options that are not permanent.
Almost all the students get placed and MTech students get plenty of placement opportunities. Around 500 recruiters made offers. Some of the top recruiting companies were

In my opinion, you have made the right decision by dropping the PITS Pilani EEE branch for IIT Madras Metallurgy. My cousin was forced to take IIT Madras Metallurgy by his mother. Initially, he was disappointed but his mother advised him to continue with the same enthusiasm he cleared JEE. Many students after getting admission relax and this opens opportunities for those who continue to slog even after admission.
Your ultimate goal should be to change your branch for which you will have to work hard. This can be done by staying among the top 5% of the batch with around 9 CGPA. You can switch to Mechanical and even to Electrical sometimes with a good CGPA. All you have to do is
- Focus on your subjects
- Do well in the tutorials
- Perform well on quiz
- Ace your practicals
- Score high in the Final semester exam
IIT Madras has a plethora of subjects to choose from in addition to a dual degree. You can change your branch provided your academic performance is at par with the requirements in the 3rd year. Some other highlights that might convince you further to choose IIT Madras are

Hostels of IIT Madras have the same facilities for UG, PG and Phd. students. Some hostels accommodate both UGs and PGs. M.Techs, MS students and Research scholars are given single seater rooms, but this is subject to availability. Else, they have to share a room with one or two other students. The hostel facilities are decent.
How are the placements for an Mtech Electrical in Power System and Power Electronics at IIT Madras?
Generally, in the electrical branch, almost 80-90% of students get placed. The highest salary package offered is 1 CPA. The lowest salary package offered is 12 LPA. The top recruiting companies are Jane Street, Google, and Microsoft. Almost 60% of students got internships in P&G and Dr. Reddy Laboratory. The top roles offered are engineer in petroleum industries and analyst in pharmaceuticals.
However, Power Systems and Power Electronics branch has its own shortcomings.
- Although most companies of EE allow Power students to sit for placements, if they lack knowledge of ECE subjects of GATE, they cannot clear the written test
- You will have limited options unless you are proficient in VLSI. Interviewers may not consider you if you haven’t done VLSI courses
- Core companies of Power Electronics hardly visit the campus. Those that do visit, either require a high cutoff like 9 CGPA like Enphase Systems or offer a package lower than 8 LPA.
So what is the solution to getting better packages as a student of Power Systems and Power Electronics? Well, you have two options
- Either, do some VLSI courses offered at IIT Madras itself. This will get you a good package from top companies like Intel and AMD.
- Or become proficient in coding
These two ways can save you from getting a below-average package. It’s highly advisable to do some courses not related to power engineering to increase your chances of employment because most core companies offer packages lower than 10 LPA.
Which course is better: IIT, Madras M.S. by research or IIIT Hyderabad M.Tech in computer science?
The MS program is solely research-oriented and has minimal research work, while M.Tech is coursework based and has very less research angle. It's up to you to decide which aspect is more suitable for you and then only choose the program.
The subject or area of your work defines your MS program because the entire research will be based on that area only. Chronologically, an MS student has to go through these
- Choose 5 courses related to your area of work and try to complete them within a year
- Once you are done, start your research work and publish your paper
- Sit for placements and get placed with a good package
- Synopsis meeting after which you have to write your these
- You are ready to leave IIT Madras
There is no fixed duration of the degree and one can even complete it in 2 years. It all depends on your capabilities and your area of research. Some even convert their MS degree into Ph.D. after the 1st year. The faculty pool is very cooperative and guides you continuously throughout your research work. Some important research topics include
- Computer Architecture
- Machine learning
- NLP
- Speech
As far as IIIT Hyderabad is concerned, its MTech program is coursework-based will little research in comparison to MS. So make a good choice of both institute and program based on your career prospects and preferences.
Which is better, IITM or IIT Delhi?
Not only do I claim IIT Madras to be better than IIT Delhi but so do the NIRF rankings every year. Some unique aspects of the institute that set it apart from IIT Delhi are
- Campus: IIT Delhi has a beautiful campus and an unusual sight one can witness is blackbucks, deer, and monkeys roaming around freely on one side, and the Phoenix Market City just 1 km from the campus on the other side. This gives the feeling of being situated in a forest but a city at the same time.
- Research Park: This again is a unique feature wherein future entrepreneurs get assistance and startups are given birth to here. It has ties with many major corporations like Bharat Heavy Electricals, Saint-Gobain, Forbes Marshall, and Ather Energy.
- Center of Innovation: This is the research center wherein students transform their ideas into reality. This center provides a challenging environment for geniuses and many tech clubs like Aero Club, iBot Club, and Industry Consultancy Team work under this center.
- Diversity: IIT Madras welcomes a diverse student body from all parts of the country and rich cultural blends add to the overall learning experience.
- Shaastra and Sarang: Shastra is the ISO-certified annual technical festival whereas Sarang is the annual social and cultural festival completely organized by the students.
- Hostel: The hostel and mess facilities are pretty good and students are given a comfortable environment conducive to learning.
- Facilities: Some additional facilities include Open Air Theatre, Central Library, Swimming pool, Chemplast Cricket Ground, Manohar C Watsa Stadium, and many eateries inside the campus.
- Location: Lastly, its location plays a big role in making it the most preferred IIT.
All these factors strongly influence my opinion and thus IIT Madras fairs better than IIT Delhi for me.
