Why is the cutoff for computer science in Thapar lower than that of NIT Jalandhar?
The cutoff for computer science in Thapar has seen a fall in figures. This is because of the decrease in the fame of this college. There are so many better and popular institutes that people usually don’t consider Thapar as their first choice.
Even big companies prefer students from IITs, BITS or DTU. Students themselves opt for IIT because of its tag. They know the IIT tag will always be a boon for them.
The general decrease in its popularity has resulted in lower cutoffs and the situation seems to be worsening over the years to come.
Which hostel should I take in Thapar University as a first year student?
Since my sister recently graduated from Thapar, I think I can answer this. Only three hostels, hostels B, C, and H are available for first-year boys.
Out of these hostels, at hostel H there are some AC rooms. It depends on your JEE Mains whether you will get any of the AC rooms at hostel H. Having a good JEE mains score will be beneficial. However, since everyone prefers AC rooms nowadays, the AC rooms get allotted very fast.
Hostel H is also closest to the academics block. It is pretty good. The rooms are spacious. But it lacks interaction with hostels B and C. It also does not have a badminton court or a garden area.

What board percentage is required to get CSE at Thapar University through Mode-2 counselling?
One of my friends graduated from Thapar University and here’s what I got to know from him. Firstly let me answer your question.
- At Thapar University, you need only your PCM marks of 12th boards to get admission through mode-2 if you have a good percentage in the board examinations.
- However, less than 93% in PCM is difficult for you.
- You should have at least 92 to 93% in PCM (12th boards) to apply for the same.
- Since CSE is the most preferred branch at Thapar University the cutoffs are high.
- I would suggest you attend all rounds then only you will get an idea of where you stand in the list.
You may get CSE through mode-2 counseling however the chances are moderate. So, try all the modes and in-person counseling.
How’s the placements for COE in Thapar University?
COE placements in Thapar University are decent and numerous opportunities are offered to its students. The reality is, the quality of roles and packages also depends largely on the profiles of the students and their skills. Many reputed firms like Microsoft IDE, Amazon, and Maruti visit the campus every year and offer lucrative packages to skilled students. Work Applications, a Japanese company offered a package of INR 30 LPA in the past. Many such offers are made.
Many students resort to off-campus placements and end up with high packages. The reason is that the campus placements do not allow some startups because they aren't sure of their credibility. These startups offer huge packages to students in off-campus placemats.
If you want to get placed as a COE student at Thapar University check the following points

Which is better for CSE, Thapar, LNMIIT, or IIIT Vadodara?
If you are facing a decision between different colleges, you are recommended to join LNMIIT.
While IIIT Vadodara may seem like an obvious choice, it does not yet have its own campus, and its curriculum is still unstable. Additionally, its placement record is not great. Therefore, IIIT Vadodara may not be the best option for you.
Thapar is a decent college with good infrastructure and facilities, but its student quality may not be as high as you would like. Half of the seats are reserved, and the competition for placements can be tough due to the high student intake. Furthermore, Thapar's reputation has been declining in recent years.
On the other hand, LNMIIT is an excellent choice. There are no reservations, and the number of seats is limited. You can check the college's website for information on placements and other important details. So if you want to make a wise choice, LNMIIT is your best bet.
How is the orientation programme at Thapar University?
The student orientation at Thapar University is also known as Orientation Week, Fresher’s week, and Welcome Week. Several events are held during the entire duration of this week. You will be officially oriented and welcomed into the university then.
Here are some points to keep in mind:
- You will be asked to attend orientation compulsorily at the time of admission.
- However, it is not a compulsory event and no attendance will be recorded. Do not worry as it is not related to your academic records.
- If you feel bored in these events or seminars, you can simply go to your room and rest there.
- Always ensure that you take your lectures, classes, labs as well as and tutorial classes seriously. Attendance is mandatory here and it is recorded. Maintain at least 75% attendance in this case.
- Overall, the orientation program goes for about two hours roughly. The Dean, DOSA, and the Director of the college attend the college. They will also introduce you to several things concerning the university.
- You will learn about academic grade systems, semester, and also about different rules and regulations.
- If you are interested in placements, you will be provided with this as well.
You will have fun in the orientation week and possibly get to meet some of your batch mates.
How is Thapar University for doing a PhD?
Thapar University is not good for doing Ph.D. The Computer Science department is full of people who are self-involved.
Except for a few faculty members, others are not good. They will not help you in your research work and due to which you could miss deadlines.
Clearing GATE and then going for some decent college is the better option. Your thesis will be the real mirror of what you do during your entire Ph.D program. Work hard and get into one of the prestigious colleges in the country.
We can say that give your best shot in the GATE exam and get your seat reserved in some decent college, so that you gain some knowledge along with the hands-on industry training.

Here are a few helpful tips for students starting their first year at Thapar University.
- Make sure your attendance is 75% because anything below it will get you detained and you might not be allowed to sit for exams
- Always make intellectual friends who help you during exams with their informative notes.
- Explore places outside the campus and understand yourself better. Taking a break from academics is very necessary to refuel your passion for studies.
- Join the societies that help you identify and pursue your passion. There is a society for almost everything from Literature and dramatics, to technical societies.
- Don't adopt a narrow perspective and limit yourselves to studies only. Plan your future and start working on it.
- While many may not agree, CGPA does matter both in the short and long run. Maintain good grades to ensure a bright future.

Is Thapar University better than VIT placement-wise?
When placements are concerned, the better opportunities are secured by the student’s overall performance and rather than the college. But if I have to choose one among them, then I’d say Thapar receives better placement offers than VIT.
- The number of students at VIT is greater than Thapar. So there is more competition for any particular job opportunity.
- The number of companies visiting both campuses is almost equal.
- The faculty at Thapar is highly educated and cooperative.
- Students get enough industrial exposure through seminars, industrial visits, and internships.
- Several mock group discussions and interview sessions are also conducted at Thapar to groom the students.
- The college also has a lot of societies to improve the students’ soft skills.
- It helps them in boosting their confidence and developing good communication skills.

The biggest factor is that a lot of companies visit Thapar and so it is easier to get a placement there. The placements are better in Thapar. But do remember that the placements completely depend on you and not the college. A lot of companies visit the college for placements but it is up to you the kind of effort that you wish to put in that will land you a job.
