How are the branches of CSE and ECE at NIT Calicut?
One of my friends is a student of NIT Calicut and according to him, the CS department is the best in the institute. It is also among the top 3 CS branches in NITs.

What are some pros and cons of NIT Calicut that one should know before joining (ECE)?
Every coin has two sides and likewise, every college you join will have its unique strengths and weaknesses. Knowing these beforehand helps you manage things and prepares you better. So here are a few pros and cons one must be aware of before joining ECE at NIT Calicut
Pros
- The ECE department of NIT Calicut is one of the oldest and most well-established departments of the institute and is also accredited by NBA. It's second only to the CSE department and the competition here is intense.
- The standards of examination papers setting and vivas conducted are excellent and evaluate the students' performances pretty well.
- The department is well-known for its high-tech embedded systems lab. The lab mechanic as well as the facilities offered help the students conduct cutting-edge research under the guidance of the lab assistants and mechanics.
- The faculty of the department is highly experienced and learned with thorough knowledge of their respective fields. They have a knack for delivering concepts in a well-organized manner.
Cons
- Being one of the oldest departments, its buildings and overall infrastructure is deteriorating. The entire department is spread across various buildings and it takes time to visit faculties.
- The academic level of this branch is high so you cannot survive solely by mugging up the concepts. You need to have in-depth knowledge of the concepts. You might find some courses to be extraordinarily challenging so be prepared for the workload.
- A few Ad-hoc faculties destroy the momentum of the course through their poor pedagogy.
- The lab sessions are again very challenging and getting the right results may be more challenging than expected.
Overall, the NIT Calicut ECE department will bring in a number of challenges but if you are interested in the branch you will get to experience an unmatched learning environment and opportunities.
Which would be the best option, NITC for an ECE, BITS Goa for an EEE, or NIT for an ICE?
It depends on you. All three colleges are good in terms of alumni and placements. But, there lies a competition between NIT Calicut and BITS.
Although both have been in existence for a long time now, are excellent colleges, both have a good brand value, one gives you a tag of a NITian and the other gives you a tag of a BITSian, the difference lies in their ranking and placement records.
NIT C is among the top 4 NITs in our country. If we consider the ECE department, it is almost at the same level as NIT Trichy. The average placement for circuit branches is around 12 LPA and the highest placement might go above 30 LPA. Additionally, a higher number of companies recruit from NIT C. BITS Pilani, Goa also provides great placements and good courses. The average CTC offered at BITS Goa is 5 LPA. Apart from infrastructure and attendance policy, other things are similar.
However, PSU visits the NIT Calicut campus during placement drives. A student of the ECE department can sit during the IT placement which is difficult in BITS if you do not take some specific courses.
Both the colleges have certain merits and demerits. The distinguishing factor can be the fee structure. If money is not a concern for you, you can go for BITS Goa but for middle-class students, NIT C would be the best option.
Does NIT Calicut have cinema theatres?
NIT Calicut does not offer a cinema theater as it doesn't even offer the basic facilities which any other Institute offers easily.
The condition of NIT Calicut is elaborated below.
- The occupancy of 1 single room is shared by 2 students, the walls of the rooms are broken with the ancient framework of windows.
- The condition of toilets is even worse than the one offered in public places.
- The space for sports activities provided such as the football court named, "NITC Football Court" has a curfew till 7 and the badminton court is no more a badminton court, it is rather an auditorium.
- Other clubs like music clubs will seem like an antique music instrument outlet and the blackboard conditions are worse.
- The common room collapses during the rainy seasons.
With such bad facilities, a theatre room is not even expected.
How is the food at NIT calicut? Can people from other states adjust?
It is difficult to adjust to the hostel food at NIT Calicut, especially for students outside Kerala. Even though you have the option to change from one mess to another monthly based on your preference, which is interesting for the first few months, gradually you will end up bored with the food and start feeling like all the ten options for food are almost the same.
Is NIT Calicut as good as NIT Allahabad?
There are various grounds on which these two colleges compete and there are various parameters on which the colleges should be analyzed before making the final decision.
The following are certain points that will hopefully help you with your analysis:
- NIT Allahabad is considered a prestigious engineering college in northern India. It is next to IITs there.
- NIT Allahabad has a better opening and closing ranks in comparison to NIT Calicut.
- The lectures at NIT Allahabad are delivered in a combination of Hindi and English. At NIT Calicut, however, the lectures are delivered only in English.
- Placements are good in both the NITs. At NIT Allahabad, all the major branches attract companies uniformly. At NIT Calicut, you will find domination of software companies as it is near software cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, etc.
- The climatic conditions at Allahabad are extreme. The summers are scorching hot, the winters are icy cold and the monsoons are hot and humid. Calicut experiences a moderate climate. At Calicut, you will realize why Kerala is referred to as “God’s own country.”
- Faculty at NIT Allahabad is really good.

NIT Allahabad has less diversity because most of the students belong to the northern states. But, at NIT Calicut you will find students from every part of the country; from Kerala to Himachal to Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat. Hence, it is largely diversified.
Who is the best teacher in the School of Biotechnology, NIT Calicut?
My brother used to be a student of NIT Calicut and his favorite teacher was Prof Prem Raj P from the School of Biotechnology, NIT Calicut. He has an analytical mind and is a master at problem-solving.
He is an exceptional teacher in the department. He is a very hardworking person who takes the responsibility of creating a competitive environment for everyone to thrive. He made teaching very effective by explaining the concepts in a more interactive way and made the classes interesting. He has the skills to be a team leader and is a role model for the students.
He has brought changes in curricular and innovation in life science programs and he is very ethical at work. He also made excellent contributions to the course by sharing his insights and actively participating in discussion.
What is the dress code for BTech students at NIT Calicut?
There are no strict dress codes that are enforced on the students at NIT Calicut. They can wear whatever they like, according to their interests, but it should confirm the Indian cultural concept and descent. The Institute does not encourage informal dresses like trousers and shorts.
What would be the best branch for B.Tech from NIT Calicut except Chem., BT, and Civil?
A lot of my friends studied at NIT Calicut. According to them the best branch for B.Tech at NIT Calicut would be Computer Science and Engineering. There are some reasons as to why they selected CSE.
- You will get the best job opportunities in your final year.
- Many popular companies visit the campus during the placement program.
- No other branch can compete with the variety of job opportunities available on-campus for CSE.
- The department's faculty is really good.
- They are well experienced in their particular fields and are very helpful.
- The branch has a reputation for being easy on oneself over the course of four years, whereas many are extremely difficult to deal with.
- However, this does not imply a reduction in the rigor of the course or the quality of education provided.

Also if you opt for CSE you will have the upper hand in learning coding unlike other departments, where to learn proper coding they have to take up additional classes. CSE is considered to be the most sorted out course both theoretically and practically.
Are laptops allowed in NIT Calicut for first year students?
One of my friends was a part of NIT Calicut and elaborated on the situation. Here is what he says.
As he mentions, the rules and regulations of NIT Calicut have not witnessed many changes in the past few years. This means, during the first year, students generally can not bring laptops as is stated in the rulebook. But, there are a reasonable number of students who still bring their respective laptops from the beginning of the first year.
The first-year hostels for the boys do not possess LAN facilities. However, there might be facilities of the same in the girl’s hostel since it is a combined complex accommodated by students of each year.
Although the rules state otherwise, you can still bring your laptop in the first year.
