Which one is the better option Computer Science at IIEST Shibpur or NIT Durgapur?

SP
Soumyadeep Pal Posted On : July 2nd, 2021
Graduated from IIEST Shibpur Department of CST in 2019

Before taking a decision, I would suggest you to consider certain points such as what you want to do after B.Tech, whether you want to do a job or you want to go into research.

  • If you want to do a job, then NIT Durgapur is a better option. NIT Durgapur provides a B.Tech course and more companies visit the campus during placements in comparison to IIEST Shibpur. On the other hand, IIEST Shibpur offers a dual degree program (B.Tech + M.tech), and most of the companies normally, are unwilling to accept a dual degree.
  • If research is what you want to pursue as your career, I will recommend IIEST Shibpur. As IIEST Shibpur offers a dual degree program, one year for research will be saved while doing M.Tech. Also, the faculty members IIEST Shibpur are slightly better than NIT Durgapur.

Here is the recent placement statistics for both institutes.

Institute

NIT Durgapur

IIEST Shibpur

Average CTC

9 LPA

6.5 LPA

Highest CTC

33 LPA

39 LPA

Top recruiters

Microsft IDC, Capgemini, Vedanta Ltd

Hope it helps you in making the right choice.

Which should I pursue: electrical at JU or computer science at IIEST Shibpur?

AB
Anik Biswas Posted On : July 2nd, 2021
Studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2021)

The answer to this depends on what your final goal is.

If you are interested in CSE and want to take up a job offering lucrative packages, CSE at IIEST is what you should opt for if you are not getting shortlisted for CSE at JU.

You will get better placements in CSE at IIEST than electrical engineering at JU.

But, if you are interested to go for further studies, JU seems to be a better choice because you have good records. There are chances of IIEST climbing up the ladder to be a much greater institution with the changes in it, however, it will definitely be a slow and steady movement and also, the outcome cannot be predicted. In addition to this, you must keep in mind that it is an integrated course which is of five years.

At the same time, even though JU does not have an INI status, it has a good brand value and is quite popular in foreign countries. This might help you in the long run if you are planning for higher studies abroad or getting settled down abroad.

What are my career prospects after doing an M.Tech course in environmental engineering from IIEST Shibpur?

IB
Indrani Bhattacharya Posted On : March 5th, 2021
IIEST Shibpur (2019)

For an MTech in Environmental Engineering, the best option will be to attempt GRE or IELTS and pursuing a Ph.D. abroad.

There are several research job opportunities for Environmental Engineering students in India but these jobs do not pay well. The reason behind this is the Govt. has not taken initiative to improve in this field. Which is not the case abroad.

If your only alternatives are institutes like NIT Durgapur, it will be better to go for IIEST Shibpur. Pursue a B.E. in Civil Engineering and after that do your MTech in Environmental Engineering. You will get way better research exposure at IIEST Shibpur.

Should I choose 5 years (I.T. + robotics) at IIIT Allahabad or 5 years CSE at IIEST Shibpur?

RR
Radhika Roy Posted On : March 24th, 2021
Studied B.Tech at IIEST Shibpur (2019)

There’s no doubts about the fact that 5 years at IIITA is a smarter option compared to anything else. This is because of the simple calculation that you are going to study the same curriculum for 4 years BTech for 3 years. That is all about the core of CS and IT. One core and two electives are a part of the fourth year in a 4-year BTech program, which hardly makes any difference.

According to the experts, Robotics is the future of the IT industry and hence, finding yourself in the midst of such an academically enriching atmosphere which ensures a full time access to a premium robotics laboratory and esteemed faculty will certainly do good to you in more ways than you can ever imagine. That’s the kind of right exposure you are looking at.

Moreover, this department at IIIT Allahabad is being funded by MHRD, thus having a lot of helpful and positive influence from the big academic and administrative circles from all over the country. A number of international conferences sponsored by IEEE are held here regularly. A DST funded summer school of robotics is also a part of this institute. IIIT Allahabad is known to have multiple MOUs with various popular foreign universities and has extensive student exchange programs to give the best exposure of the industry and experts to its students.

Can I pay in cash while taking admission in IIEST Shibpur for UG 1st year, or will I have to go for drafts and all that?

IG
Ishika Ghosh Posted On : July 5th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

Currently, most of the work is done online only but yes eventually you will have to use cash (if you want) for all the payments. For example, when you pay for the JoSSA counseling (which includes INR 44,000 towards the institute and INR 1,000 towards the counseling fee) you will have to make DD with the cash.

  • After admission, you will have to pay the semester fee of INR 62,500 (INR 18,500 extra on top of the already paid INR 44,000 earlier).
  • For this too you need to make a DD which will eventually need cash.
  • For the mess fee of 1st and 2nd semesters, you will have to pay through cash only.
  • After joining the institute, you will have to open an account in UCO Bank of the college where you will have to maintain the balance.

The college will automatically withdraw the semester fee from the 2nd semester onwards. The mess fee from 3rd semester onwards you can pay through credit cards or debit cards.

How is the internet speed in IIEST Shibpur?

MC
Meghna Chatterjee Posted On : July 5th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

The internet speed of the Wi-Fi is pretty good at the hostels. The LAN connection goes into the Wi-Fi router, which is strategically located in the hostel campus.

  • It is a gigabit fiber connection that can give a speed up to 1Gbps if connected as an Ethernet cable.
  • The Wi-Fi speed is dependent on the closeness of the room to the Wi-Fi router and the time of the day.
  • If your room is closer to the router than in the non-peak hours (after 3 AM in the night till morning and during classes when there are very few students in the hostel) you can expect a speed of 4 Mbps – 5 Mbps (with an 802.11n or 2.4GHz Wi-Fi driver) and a speed of 8 Mbps – 10 Mbps (with an 802.11ac or 5GHz Wi-Fi driver).
  • During peak hours when many students are connected simultaneously you can expect an average speed of 2 Mbps – 3 Mbps.

So the Wi-Fi speed you will receive is really good at IIEST Shibpur. Being a student here, I can assure you that internet speed was never a major problem.

Mayank Thakur Posted On : June 11th, 2021
Studied at Calcutta University (2018)

One of my friends is a local of Jharkhand. He was eligible to get into all departments and ECE at NIT Jamshedpur except CSE, and he got into the same situation where he had to choose between IT at IIEST Shibpur and ECE at NIT Jamshedpur.

He chose IT at IIEST Shibpur and was satisfied with his decision. IIEST has a good campus which is given the INI tag, their seniors are also very good who motivate their juniors.

In the following table, you will get information on IT at IIEST Shibpur and ECE at NIT Jamshedpur.

Category

IIEST Shibpur

NIT Jamshedpur

Fees

INR 71000

INR 7.16 Lakh

Recruiters

BHEL, Wipro, Axis Bank, Indian Navy, Google, Microsoft, Deloitte, Google, etc.

Amazon, Deloitte, Bajaj Auto, Wipro Turbo, Vedanta, etc.

Lowest package

INR 2.53 LPA

INR 3 LPA

Highest package

INR 40 LPA

INR 30 LPA

Completed with a good campus, great seniors, and recently been given the INI tag, it has the energy and enthusiasm to excel and the Director of IIEST is a great person. He works hard to improve the place.

Many of my friends study at NIT Jamshedpur. It has a good infrastructure but not in better condition. Newly constructed hostels at NIT are also good. But officials of NIT are not promising.

Therefore, IIEST Shibpur is a better choice as it will give you many opportunities and give you a better experience.
