What should I choose: MBA (EPGP) from IIM Bangalore or MBA (full-time) from Mannheim Business School, Germany? I have 8 years of experience in IT/Telecom and want to get into Product Management.

M.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore

Rather than telling you what to choose, I will list down the pros and cons of both the B Schools and leave it to you to make the final decision.

Mannheim Business School, Germany

Pros

  • Being one of the most reputed B Schools in Germany, you will get a high-paying job right after completing your course.
  • Mannheim itself is an experience as people from all over the world come here and you get to attend some amazing events too.

Cons

  • This B School charges a whopping fee of around 32000-35000 euros. And the fees do not include living expenses (9000 euros)
  • You will have to learn German especially if you want to get into product management to deal with clients. That is an additional expense.

IIM Bangalore

Pros

  • Fees are comparatively less than that of Mannheim Business School.
  • Faculty is supportive and extremely experienced.
  • Living expenses are included in the fees themselves.
  • The placements are top notch and with an above-average grade, you can easily get placed at a reputed firm with a high package.

Cons

  • Being located in the heart of the city the only disadvantage that IIM Bangalore students face is the heavy traffic.

Weighing both the pros and cons you can now make a decision easily. In my opinion, go for the German B School if you have plans for permanently settling abroad. But if you want to eventually stay in your home country then IIM Bangalore is the best option for you.

The incubation center at NSRCEL comprises professionals who are well-versed in the art of entrepreneurship. They will be your mentors throughout the program. They will not only teach you the basics of startups but render their insights and opinions on your startup idea. Also, you will have the privilege to avail world-class facilities of IIM Bangalore. That combined with the masterminds makes it an amazing learning experience overall.

You get to interact with other startups also. This is a good opportunity to identify the shortcomings of your idea.

What are the placement prospects for one pursuing PGP from IIM Bangalore with 7 years of work experience in PSU?

DS
Deborah Sam Posted On : December 29th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore

IIM Bangalore is supposedly the best school for people with prior work experience. In comparison to other IIMs in India, this is completely true. The lateral placements in IIMB deserve credit. There is, however, a stipulation regarding the number of years of work experience. If someone has 2-3.5 years of work experience, it is an ideal place for him because he will be allowed in almost all companies in both laterals and finals. Everyone is welcome to compete in the finals. In general, the following three things occur:

  • Candidates with 0-2 years of work experience are good for finals but have few chances in laterals. Preferred in marketing, finance, and top consulting positions (for the brightest).
  • Candidates with (2-3.5) years of professional experience are excellent for laterals and finals. Preferred in all situations, including consulting.
  • Candidates with (3.5-4.5) years of work experience: Good for laterals, with an average chance of making it to the finals (but good for average consulting roles and relevant experience)
  • Candidates with 4.5+ years of work experience have a poor chance of making it to the finals, except for relevant experience and some consulting roles, and a mixed chance of making it to the laterals ( some might end up getting good, for some, it might be average)

It is determined by the candidate's profile, achievements, type of work experience, GPA (DML list), networking, communication skills, the nature and demand of the recruiting company, the job market, availability, and so on.

Prospects for 7 years of work-ex are now available. With that, you should be prepared to explain its alignment with your career goals during the shortlisting process. Some startups do offer opportunities to talented students with extensive work experience. Getting on the DML list increases your chances of success everywhere. You should have place com people on your side. If you believe that these things are difficult for you, try taking sabbaticals/study leaves (if you work in a PSU) and evaluating later. You will almost certainly be assigned here. The placement's quality cannot be guaranteed.

How good is IIM Lucknow as compared to IIM A, B, C, and ISB for Consulting and Network Building?

SZ
Saher Zehra Posted On : January 16th, 2023
Former PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

In India, IIM Lucknow is worth far more than ISB, particularly in MNCs and finance/marketing jobs.

The talk of a consulting and network-building pedigree revolves more around their flagship PGPX program and their tentacles in Microsoft and Cisco, both of which recognize the limited role of an MBA in their industry and provide well-defined jumps to ISB graduates back on campus. In the last 2-3 years, IIM Lucknow has done fairly well in global placements, and the sky is the limit for the right student.

It is clear that your decision should be motivated by your prospects of performance at either campus and should be carefully considered.

It is true that those who can balance pressures and perform consistently have an advantage when it comes to placements on campus. Also, mobility in the industry should matter without the help of your b-school label and should be about your performance on the job in making friends. Students from each campus meet everyone on an equal footing in the industry.

Only if you accepted a different field in your campus placement or were assigned a backroom job will you face unequal pressure, as neither pedigree allows you much mobility.

If IIM KI is 8/10 (ABC being 10/10) where does IIM Shillong and IIM Trichy stand?

SC
Sarat Chandra Posted On : January 13th, 2023
Former PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

Here are my ratings for the IIMs

  • IIM Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta: 10
  • IIM Lucknow: 9
  • IIM Kozhikode and Indore: 7.9
  • Other second-generation IIMs: 7.6
  • New third generation IIMs: 6.8

The above rankings have been done on the basis of age, placements, and research. I don’t think these factors are enough to rank IIMs.

Another major parameter of comparison is the duration of the establishment.

  • First generation: (est before 1984) Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta Lucknow
  • Second generation: (est. before 2000) Indore and Kozhikode
  • Third generation:  (est. around 2009) - Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur, Shillong
  • Fourth Generation: New IIMs (after 2014) - 7 IIMs

Most of the FT rankings and online rankings are based on this parameter. In reality, every IIM has top-notch faculty, infrastructure and placements m. Yet the new IIMs will take some time to reach the top.

How can you compare ISB’s CBA vs IIM Bangalore’s BAI courses?

GG
Gopi Krishna Goyal Posted On : December 29th, 2022
Studied at Indian School of Business

Both ISB’s CBA and IIM Bangalore’s BAI are vastly different from one another. The following are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both. CBA at ISB:

Pros:

  • Global Faculty and a very good campus are available to CBA students for the entire year, just like PGP students.
  • Very good networking opportunity with 100+ batch as you live on campus with them sharing food, time, and fun.
  • As the 5th batch of CBA graduates, the alumni base is strong.
  • Except for tutorials, the teaching method is primarily offline.
  • Prof Shailesh, Prof Sarang Deo, Prof Arun, and Prof Sudhir Voleti are some of the best faculty in the market.
  • ISB Brand Value because ISB promotes this course as a full-time option.

Cons:

  • One of the main factors is the high cost.
  • They should raise prices slightly and offer more career opportunities.

IIM B or L:

Pros:

  • Global Faculty and Excellent Peers
  • IIM Brand Worth.
  • More suitable for working people is the online method.
  • In comparison to ISB, the fees are minor.

Cons:

  • You are not permitted to stay on campus, which limits your opportunities to network with your peers.
  • Although IIM promotes this as an executive course, it is more appropriate to take it offline because concepts are difficult to grasp online.

What is the placement of IIM Bangalore and Calcutta Which will be better

AS
Ashay Sinha Posted On : December 12th, 2022
Studied Finance & Marketing at Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode

You cannot determine which institution is better just by looking at data. Figures tend to mislead you. Rather than relying on just statistics, you need to choose what’s best for you. All the top IIMs are top-notch B Schools. But you need to make a choice based on your personal preference. I have mentioned the specifications of some famous B Schools.

  • IIM Bangalore: It focuses more on experience. Most of the students here are with 1-2 years of experience.

  • IIM Calcutta: It is rightly called the finance campus of India. If you are interested in Investment Banking, hedge funds, or venture capital firms then IIM Calcutta is the best choice.

  • IIM Ahmedabad: Most of the CAT toppers and CAT aspirants dream to get into IIM Ahmedabad.

  • XLRI Jamshedpur: It offers the best MBA HR in Asia.

  • NITIE & SJMSOM(IITB): Go for this if you are interested in operations.

  • FMS Delhi: If you want to have the best ROI from MBA then FMS Delhi is the best option.

Choose your college based on your aspirations and not on the basis of placement statistics.

Is it necessary to be an IITian or a topper to get admission to IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore?

S
Sagardeep Posted On : December 23rd, 2022

It’s not at all necessary to be an IITian or a topper to get admission to IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore. Some students are neither batch toppers nor IITians. In fact, some of them do not even finish first in their class in 12th grade.

You must perform well in interviews (both IIM A and B), have a good CAT score, and demonstrate consistent academic performance. And consistent academic performance in college means a CGPA of 9.1/10.

I am interested in a quantitative finance-oriented Ph.D., so should I apply for an FPM in the Finance/Control area or Decision Sciences in IIM Bangalore?

AG
Anshul Gupta Posted On : December 21st, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode

Firstly IIM Bangalore does not offer FMP in Maths because it does not specialize in Maths. So if you are going for the quantitative field you need to choose an area of interest on your own.

In India Finance has more to do with economics rather than Maths. This is because of the lack of Maths in UG and PG schools. So the research work has a qualitative approach rather than a quantitative one. Here math is just used to express the research conducted and is not for actual research purposes. So based on this information, I have 3 suggestions for you

  1. If you are hell-bent on pursuing mathematical finance, do it outside India where the score is higher.
  2. Applying in both areas will widen your prospects. The only requirement is that you must do your area-specific courses.
  3. Don’t neglect other areas of finance that are very interesting and also quantitative. These include Corporate Finance or Banking.

Based on my suggestions and information you can make a wise decision that suits you the best.
