Is it worth joining T.I.M.E. Varanasi as an IIT (BHU) student?

PG

PhD from Indian Institute of ManagementAhmedabad (2021)

Yes! It’s worth joining TIME Varanasi as an IIT(BHU) student. It will keep you in the zone of preparation for CAT or other competitive exams, which is highly tricky by just staying on the campus and preparing on your own. Of course, if you are motivated enough, you can self prepare by buying all the mock tests and study materials online. But there are other reasons too for which you need to go and join the institute. Being on the campus, you won’t have a lot of resources and practical training as far as developing your personality, communication skills, and aptitude is concerned. This institute will help you by putting an overall impact on your vocabulary as well as the things mentioned above. If you visit the institute, do not forget to meet the director of TIME Varanasi. He has helped a lot of students from IIT and guided them honestly.

Why is IT-BHU now referred to as IIT BHU?

AC
Akash Chauhan Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2014)

IIT BHU used to be an engineering course under the administration of BHU and was known as IT BHU. In 2012, the government granted IT BHU the status of an IIT. Since that moment IT BHU became IIT BHU, the sixteenth IIT of this country. The primary reason for the establishment of IITs was to promote research work in our country. IT BHU had a big contribution to research going on in India. Although IIT BHU still shares the same campus as BHU, it is a different institute. Being an IIT has brought many changes in IIT BHU. It is receiving more funds from the government. The research work has also boosted. Many state-of-the-art research equipment has also been brought into the college. So, that is the reason why IT BHU is now referred to as IIT BHU.

M.Sc. in PhysicsIndian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) (2021)

Before the commencement of the session 2017, internet used to be a limited resource for IIT(BHU). IIT Bhubaneswar used to be the Institute of Technology ( IT BHU), whose administration fall under Banaras Hindu university but it got a different stature in converting into IIT in 2012. Although, some facilities like Internet services were still under BHU administration for long.

So before 2017, there were limits on the internet usage of 4 GB and which could be accessed through LAN only and which this question asks about. But after it, IIT BHU gets its own wifi services and there is no cap on usage. Hence you can use as much data as you want once availing internet connection of college. Why has IIT BHU never managed a team in ACM-ICPC World Finals?

VC
Varun Chatterjee Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B. Tech. Computer Science & Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

The reason behind why IIT BHU has never reached to ACM-IPC world finals is the lack of proper guidance and preparation. There are many good coders in IIT BHU and they practice competitive coding very seriously. In the past, students from IIT BHU reached the regionals but did not go ahead with the preparation for global finals as they fetched good job offers. Many coders have the potential to reach the finals, but they stop putting serious efforts when they are assured that they will be placed in their dream companies. Also, there was a lack of proper junior-senior interaction in the past years due to which proper guidance to reach the finals was not given. This trend has now been changed and now every week interaction sessions are being organized so that the first-year students are motivated properly from the very beginning. In these sessions, important algorithms are discussed and home works for the next session are being given. All these sessions are being organized and managed by Club Of Programmers (COPS). Because of these sessions, the students are well motivated from their first year itself and the number of blue coders on Codeforces has been increased from 2 to 7 and one of the students is Purple coder which means he is the highest-rated coder on codeforces. Because of their efforts, the coding culture of IIT BHU  has been improved and IIT BHU  secured second place at Kolkata-Kanpur regionals, so they will be representing the college for the world finals.

How can IIT-BHU be an IIT and a part of BHU at the same place ?

IDD Electrical Engineering & Power ElectronicsIndian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2017)

6 institutes, 14 faculties, and 140 departments comprise the whole of Banaras Hindu University. Before 2012 IIT-BHU was known as IT (Institute of Technology) and hence was under the administrative control of BHU itself. After 2012, IT BHU gained the status of IIT and became an autonomous institution. Since it is located inside the BHU campus, it is popularly called IIT-BHU. Otherwise, it can be called IIT-Varanasi too. It runs according to the IIT-council rules but doesn’t have a separate VC. The VCs are the same as that of BHU. Another major difference between these two institutes is in the mode of admission. BHU conducts its own admission test while IIT admission takes place through JEE mains and advance, GATE & GPAT.

Why is IIT-BHU going down?

KB
Karan Bajpai Posted On : February 15th, 2022
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2021)

It’s true that there are areas in which IIT BHU needs to improve like infrastructure, faculty, etc. But writing off the institute entirely would be wrong. Here are the reasons why.

  • IIT BHU was ranked 14 for B.Tech by NIRF 2021.
  • For CSE, it is among the most difficult college to get into. In 2021, the cutoff for CSE was 594-873. The steep cutoff ensures a great student crowd.
  • IIT BHU has successfully wrapped up its first phase of 2022 placement. The highest CTC offered was INR 2.05 CPA.
  • Since the institute was established way back in 1919, the alumni network is huge.
  • The institute has many councils and clubs, such as Science and Technology Council (SnTc), Cultural Council, etc. You can pursue your hobbies there. These clubs have many achievements in competitions happening around the world.

In fact, IIT BHU has improved its academics, research culture, placements, a lot over the years. Life on campus in IIT BHU is similar to any other IIT.
