Which is better: IISc, Bangalore or NUS, Singapore?
In terms of the world ranking, IISc is way behind from NUS. In QS world ranking IISc is ranked at 185th position whereas NUS is at 11th position.
NUS covers a wide variety of courses like Business, Arts and Social Sciences, Computing, Dentistry, Design and environment, Duke-NUS Medical School, Engineering, Integrative Sciences and Engineering, Law, Music, Public Health, Public Policy, etc. Whereas in IISC there are two centers- Science and Engineering. Both of them provide undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs. IISC mainly focuses on research work and provides only BS degrees at the bachelor level. NTU also has limited courses at bachelor level like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.
NTU has good professors and has much better infrastructure, facilities, and global exposure. Because of this, the fee is very high in NUS if compared with IISc. The students are expected to deliver rather than understanding the basics. They have to study advanced subjects in the first semester itself at NUT.
IISc is best if you want to stay in India. But if you want global exposure then go for NUS.
Is it difficult to study in IISc Bangalore?
Studying at IISc Bangalore is difficult. Some challenges that you will face as a student are - plenty of assignments that are difficult at times, bi-weekly quizzes, surprise tests, sometimes you might not understand a concept taught in class, and some professors schedule 8 a.m. classes. The professors here are really approachable and friendly. Let me narrate a few incidents that will convince you
- A professor I know sets very tricky questions and on one such exam when the students were busy attempting the challenging paper, he along with some assistants started serving refreshments to the students. Later on, I found out that the assistant was a GOLD medallist from EPFL yet his humbleness overtook his knowledge.
- You will be attending the seminars along with your professors who are always eager to learn new things. Despite being degree holders and having huge qualifications their humble attitude towards learning instills a sense of positivity in the students.
- What amazes me the most were instances when some professors failed to answer certain questions in the class, and then they got back to you through emails with a properly researched answer. In fact, some professors even stayed throughout the night with their students in labs figuring out answers.
- Their dedication level is extremely high as sometimes professors attend seminars even when it’s raining and they are drenched in the way.
- The professors value every second and once I saw a professor eat a dry bun and a fruity just to save time.

The Master of Managment (M.Mgt) program at IISc, Bangalore is one of a kind in India. The program duration is 2 years. The course curriculum is quantitative and technology-oriented which enables graduate engineers to become responsible management leaders in data-driven organizations. IISc, Bangalore is ranked 1st in India by NIRF.
The total course fee for M.Mgt at IISc, Bangalore is 2.56 lakhs and the student intake of the program is 15. The eligibility criteria for admission into the program are BE/ B Tech degree with 60% marks with a valid score in CAT/GMAT/GATE. - Whereas NITIE focuses more on the logical and decision-making skills from the managerial point of view.
- Both are different in the placement domain as there's a marginal difference between the average packages.
- Also, IISc is a tier 2 college unlike NITIE.

Do you regret joining BSc Research at IISc Bangalore over B Tech at IITs?
As a class 12th student, I wanted to become either an engineer or a doctor, simply out of societal pressure.
As I started understanding myself I realized that I did not want to become a doctor. Therefore, I started preparing for the IITs. I liked studying, so I was sure that I did not want a job after I was done with my UG degree. I wished to go into research.
I was naive at the time and thought IITians do not go for research work. I finally went for IISc to join BSc Research.
I do not regret joining BSc Research at IISc Bangalore. Had I done my B.Tech from an IIT, I would have switched to Neuroscience or Biophysics anyway. At IISc Bangalore, I realized my true calling.
Its curriculum made my switch to this interdisciplinary field a lot easier. The course fee for BSc Research at IISc Bangalore is affordable as well.
Therefore, I have no regret in choosing BSc Research at IISc Bangalore over B.Tech at IITs.

The professors at IISc receive numerous internship applications. Many of them hire interns much before your mail gets to them. Professors hire interns 2-3 months before the start of the internship period.
One of my seniors interned at IISc Bangalore. According to her-
- SOP counts a lot. Try to sound very convincing about how much you love that research area.
- The recommendation letter format offered by IISc contains an optional column to send the key publications of the professor who is giving you the LOR. Start the application in advance and coax your professor into giving the key publications of his research duly signed and attested.
- CGPA holds a lot of importance. Make sure to score well.
- A good courier service must be used to send the required papers. Track the documents. Your profile and write-up might be very good but unless they need to reach the right place.
If you are interested in research in compressed sampling and the institute is not your priority, you can also apply for international internships such as DAAD, MITACS, SN BOSE, and Charpak France. There are numerous foreign universities involved in extensive research on compressed sampling.

The only way to get a summer internship at IISc is through IAS (Indian Academy of Science). And you need to be in at least 2nd year to apply for it. Once you have applied, your application goes through professors whose departments are in need of interns.

You can gain some prior knowledge related to the project before going for it. These internships are not for short time periods as the minimum time period for an internship is around 6 months.
