SB
Sheel Saurabh Balley Posted On : October 21st, 2022
BA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

IGNOU uses a credit system, and in order to get an Hons, a student must have 48 credits in that subject, which means taking 6 papers of 8 credits over the course of three years.

In the case of English, below is a chart that includes the course name and code:

BEGE 101 - From Language to Literature

BEGE 102 - The Structure of Modern English

BEGE 103 - Communication Skills in English

BEGE 104 - English for Business Communication

BEGE 105 - Understanding Prose

BEGE 106 - Understanding Poetry

BEGE 107 - Understanding Drama

BEGE 108 - Reading the Novel

You will notice that there are eight papers, each worth eight credits; students pursuing a major (Hons) should select any six of these eight papers (2 papers each year)

Students can only take up to 48 credits in a single subject.

Aside from the major papers, there are two compulsory courses in the first and second years: BSHF 101 and FST-1. Other elective courses must be chosen from the Program Guide's list or groups.

Allahabad University is known for its Arts faculty. In the Arts faculty, there are 15 different departments. The main campus alone takes about 2000 students each year.

The cutoff varies each year depending on different factors. However, the competition is not that tough. If you have done about 60 questions out of 150 correctly then you can easily get selected. In 2021, the required cutoff for all categories in the first round was 186. However, to get hostel accommodation will have to secure around 220 marks.

NG
Nikhil Gupta Posted On : October 28th, 2022
B Tech from Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal (Graduated-2018)

If you are pursuing an MA in Economics from IGNOU, then make the best use of your study material. To score well in economics, you need to develop a deep understanding of economic theories, developments in the field, and applied math. You also need to stay updated in the field of economics. This can be done by reading newspapers, and magazines. To master your classes:

  1. Make detailed notes

  2. Form a study group

It’s very important to develop an understanding of economic theories, history, and practice. Indulge yourself in the existing academic literature on the topic. Some good sources of relevant information are

  • Newspapers like Financial Times

  • Magazines like The Economist.

  • Economic blogs like Economist’s View or Grasping Reality

  • Economic books like Freakonomics, The Naked Economist, and The Armchair Economist.

Listed below are some additional tips that will help you score good marks in MA Economics in IGNOU:

  • Browse your library’s economic section

  • Podcasts like NPR's Planet Money will help you develop a better understanding

  • Watch the news daily. The economy is related to everything happening around the world. Stay well versed with what’s happening.

  • CNN's Richard Quest offers the business-oriented show "Quest Means Business”.

  • While attempting the paper, start with the questions you are most confident about.

  • Analyze graphs carefully

These tips aim at helping everybody in general. But if you still face trouble understanding the concepts, hire a tutor.

Which is better, ISBF Delhi or NMIMS Mumbai for economics honours?

RK
Ritesh Kumar Posted On : February 23rd, 2023
PGDM from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (2019)

Both the colleges ISBF Delhi and NMIMS Mumbai offer a decent Economic Honors program. I have drawn a detailed comparison between the two on the basis of the following parameters

Worth of the Degree: NMIMS might be a reputed college but its degree cannot be compared to that of ISBF which offers a University of London degree in addition to academic assistance from London School of Economics and Political Science, the top-ranked institute in Economics.

Curriculum: Economics is vast and covers a very broad spectrum of subjects from development and finance to international trade. Now the University of London excellently allows the students to choose 6 electives of their choice in addition to 6 compulsory subjects. This ensures that the students get a job in the sector they are passionate about. This flexibility of curriculum lacks on the part of NMIMS.

Prospects: A DU student applying to top institutions in the UK for a master, is required to complete a diploma year before starting with his master's. This aims to compensate for the difference in the standard of education. However, anyone with a University of London degree can directly apply for a Master in top universities in the UK.

Batch size: The batch size at ISBF is relatively smaller than that of NMIMS. This aids in better student-teacher interaction and class discussions. This in turn helps in better delivery of the curriculum.

So in almost all aspects, ISBF is a better choice than NMIMS.

What are the minimum subjects to be taken for the BA programme of IGNOU?

LA
Lakshita Ahuja Posted On : November 2nd, 2022
Studied at Indira Gandhi National Open university (IGNOU)

In BA you have 96 credits in total. From which:

  • 24 credits are of 3 compulsory courses of 8 credits each.

  • 64 or 56 credits are of the courses of your choice.

  • 8 or 16 credits are of application oriented courses.

You are allowed to complete only 32 credits every year. If you want minimum courses for your BA program you should choose all courses of 8 credits each. That will be 12 courses for 3 years, 4 courses per year.

But if you want your BA degree to be a BA major, then you must complete 48 credits in one specific subject (subject in which you want a BA major).

2 more important things to know are:

  1. The theory exams of the 4 credit courses are of 50 marks in 2 hrs.

  2. The theory exams of the 8 credit courses are of 100 marks in 3 hrs.

Note that these 48 credits must be completed in 3 years with minimum 16 credits per year in that specific subject.

How is BA economics from DTU (East campus)?

MG
Mayank Gupta Posted On : July 6th, 2023
studied at Delhi Technological University (2020)

BA Economics Honors is a newly launched program by DTU that is delivered under the department called the University School of Management and Entrepreneurship (USME). Other programs offered under this department are BBA and MBA.

Here are a few highlights pertaining to the BA Economics Honors:

  • The faculty is highly experienced and hails from reputed colleges. There are many inspirational professionals, one such being Dr. KV Bhanumurthy, Rtd. Dean of DSE who teaches Economics to first-year students.
  • DTU BA Economics curriculum is somewhat similar to DU or IP University curriculum. Usually, the electives are finalized by the faculty after receiving the consent of students.
  • DTU has a 75% attendance rule to maintain the decorum of academic ambiance here.
  • The campus is new so it’s still in the development phase.

Overall, I believe this institute in general and this program specifically has a lot of potential and anyone who fails to get into DU for Economics should consider joining it.

How is the BA economics course at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata? What is the cutt-off for candidates who took commerce stream in 12? Is Mathematics subject compulsory for admissions?

RC
Rishabh Chandel Posted On : June 9th, 2021
Studied at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata (2017)

If you are considering pursuing a degree in Economics, it is recommended that you do not prioritize Xavier's Kolkata.

  • You'd be better off starting at one of the top ten colleges in Delhi or one of the top five in Mumbai.
  • Kolkata lacks the atmosphere and opportunities that economics graduates require both during and after graduation.
  • In contrast, Delhi has a great environment (coaching and guidance for higher studies in eco) and opportunities (training and internships) for eco graduates.
  • The Finance Industry in Mumbai will be very helpful (and much needed) in obtaining internships, part-time jobs, or any other type of practical training.
  • Calcutta is devoid of all of these.
  • Also, Mathematics is mandatory in order to be admitted to B.A. (Eco) at St. Xavier's Kolkata.

If you are not applying through any quotas (such as Christian, SC/ST, or from schools affiliated with Xavier's), you will need at least 96 percent in class 12th. Despite the fact that it appears in subsequent lists, it goes down by 1%–2%.

Is selective IGNOU BA and MA political science sufficient for political science optional in UPSC?

PD
Prithviraj Debbarma Posted On : October 21st, 2022
MCA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (Graduated -2010)

One of my sister's acquaintances wrote 2016 mains with PSIR optional. She had been working in an IT firm till a month before prelims and had been preparing for a year before.

Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is quite fast. The study material provided by IGNOU is good for selective reading for specific topics like Justice, Equality, MN Roy, Sri Aurobindo, Theory of international relations etc. But she had an engineering background and revealed that the notes were not of premium quality.

Paper 1- Part A

Gauba is not bad. But you will need to read the book more than one time to interpret it completely. The information has been divided unevenly within the chapters making it a difficult read. One more good source is Shubra Ranjan's notes. They summarise the points in the UPSC syllabus format.

Paper 1- Part B

Complete Laxmikant.Read the interpretations given by famous analysts, their viewpoints, case laws and their history and the politics that played behind the evolution of laws and how and why the judiciary evolved. Again for this look into Shubra Ranjan notes. For the remaining topics look into Oxford publications.

Paper 2- part A

For this part, the best recommendation is Heywood’s global politics. It’s easy to understand and very well written. Combine this with IGNOU notes and you will get good results. You can also go through questions given in Baylis and Smith because sometimes they appear verbatim and quoting the exact same viewpoint can get you some extra points.

Paper 2 - Part B

Conduct internet research and make your own notes on the topics included in the syllabus. Then go through commentaries on IDSA /IPCS websites. This will give you a better understanding of and current status of relations.

Once you are done with all the study materials, focus on developing the vocabulary for PSIR. Make sure your answers are evenly distributed with theories, quotes, facts, years etc. Practice writing answers a lot.

Ambedkar University, Delhi is a new university and it comes under the jurisdiction of the Delhi government. It is mostly known for its Humanities courses like Sociology, Phycology, Economics, etc. It has better faculties compared to DU. Almost all faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees. As it is a small institute, the quality of education offered is quite good. They also offer many subject choices for these courses. However, the placement scenario of the institute is not that good.
