What GATE rank is required to get an MS and a PhD in IIT Madras?

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Unlike MTech, admission to MS or Ph.D. is based more on their interview and aptitude test than on GATE score.

  • For some of the master's programs, like MS candidates are shortlisted after a round of technical interviews. IIT Madras prefer students with GATE scores of at least 90 percentile or more.
  • For Ph.D. too, candidates will be considered if they score between 1000-2000. Here, a rank less than 800 is considered excellent and such candidates will be considered for Ph.D. courses through GATE scores.

Thus we can say that the cut-off required for joining MS and Ph.D. programs at IIT Madras, for example, is lesser compared with the cut-off required for admission into the MTech program

Which is the better option, an MS at IIT Madras or an M.Tech at IIT Bhubaneswar?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : June 16th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

My brother completed his M.S. in Electrical Engineering recently from IIT Madras and recommends it highly to everybody. Here is why you should prefer IIT Madras MS to IIT Bhubaneswar MTech.

  • Better research culture and opportunities
  • Better and diverse student body
  • Highly qualified faculty
  • The job prospects offered at IIT Madras are way better than at IIT Bhubaneswar.
  • IIT Madras being older has a much more elaborate alumni base.
  • Vast Alumni network.
  • If you haven’t taken a gap after B.Tech and your GPA in MS first year is more than 8, you can switch to Ph.D.
  • Better student exchange and internship opportunities.
  • IIT Madras being one of the oldest IITs is a brand in itself.

The only flaw is the long duration of the course; 2.5 - 3 year's which leaves no time for preparing for competitive exams like UPSC.

Which is better for neurosurgery CMC Vellore or AIIMS Delhi?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : July 4th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Both CMC Vellore and AIIMS Delhi are renowned Indian medical colleges and hospitals.

AIIMS Delhi is one of the super-specialty hospitals for neurosurgery. Even though CMC Vellore is equipped with all the facilities for the neurosurgery branch, AIIMS Delhi ranks better in this regard.

If you do end up in CMC Vellore, its neurosurgery is excellent in terms of patient management protocols and care. Its post-surgery rehabilitation is world-class and stands unparalleled.

Also, choose according to your preferred location. If you wish to settle in Delhi in the future, choosing AIIMS Delhi will be a wise decision. You can also choose based on the distance of the institution from your hometown.

Whichever of the two you choose, you will have to compromise your personal life to a great extent. However, you will gain a lot of experience for your career as a medical professional.

Overall, out of the two, AIIMS Delhi has more facilities for neurosurgery and a locational advantage.

Which one should I choose, an MS in IIT Madras or an M.Tech in IIT Hyderabad?

Ritesh Prasad Posted On : May 19th, 2023

Whether you should choose MS in IIT Madras Or MTech in IIT Hyderabad depend on what your plans are after completing your Masters.

If you want to get employed right away, MTech is a more preferable option than MS. IIT Madras being one of the oldest and highly reputed IITs, is better for an MTech than IIT Hyderabad, a relatively new IIT. You will be surprised to know that IIT Madras has been consistently ranked 1 by the NIRF Rankings in 2022 for the fourth time in a row and Internationally, IIT Madras was ranked 255 in the QS World University Rankings of 2022.

I think pursuing MS from IIT Madras is a good choice given the quality of research work at IIT Madras. The only problem is research takes around 2.5-3.5 years while MTech can be done in 2 years. Here are the placement statistics of both the institutes

IIT Madras MTech placements

Highest CTC

INR 46.08 LPA

Median CTC

INR 13.02 LPA

Number of students registered

277

Number of students placed

212

Placement percentage

76.53%

If you are certain of doing a PhD after your Masters, go for MS from IIT Madras definitely. But if you want to sit for placements within 2 years, an MTech program from either IITs will be helpful.

Since nearly 75 percent of the IIM Ahmedabad graduates end up having unsuccessful careers, does it make more sense to give the GRE-TOEFL and go abroad for an MS?

SB
Shrey Banka Posted On : December 22nd, 2022
Studies at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Expected 2023)

Firstly your opinion regarding IIM Ahmedabad is false. IIM Ahmedabad is one of the best B Schools with its alumni working at big firms. Your claim that 75% of IIM Ahmedabad graduates end up having unsuccessful careers is wronged.

Maybe your definition of success is a bit retarded. Success does not necessarily mean becoming a CEO, CTO, or CFO. Success depends on how much your hard work and efforts are paying you back. IIM Ahmedabad excels in this aspect as the placements provided by this B School are top-notch.

It’s the massive impact caused by IIM Ahmedabad’s alumni that big firms keep visiting the campus again and again. They know the surety of the talent and offer big packages. Apart from these, MNCs worldwide are now hiring from this B School. The brand IIMA is recognized across the world.

Now if you are confused between MS and MBA I think you should analyze your own interests. If you are tech-savvy and prefer technological work over management then even choosing MS can make you successful.

MS in IIT Mandi offers four schools; they are as follows:

  1. School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE)
  2. School of Engineering (SE)
  3. School of Basic Sciences (SBS)
  4. School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)

The branches for each school vary based on the interests of the scholars. For example, SCEE has many branches of power electronics, control systems, machine learning, computer vision, power systems, image processing, and so on.

IIT Mandi MS research program is a 3-year program. However, you can also complete the program in 2.5 years; it may depend on your research work. The placement support is good at IIT Mandi. You need to strive hard for the successful completion of your research work in your area of interest. You must also have good programming skills for future opportunities.

Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

The questions can be based on your academic background and the stream you choose for your studies. It is better to have both theory and practical knowledge and make sure you are confident enough with your answers. Some general questions can be expected, they are

  1. Introduce yourself.
  2. Questions based on your previous mark lists
  3. Polish your last year’s research skills and study your dissertation well.
  4. Study more about IIT Mandi and impress them by showing your interest to study in this institution.
  5. They might test your problem-solving skills

Satisfy the interviewers with the correct answers and a decent presentation

I am a B.E. first year student at UIT RGPV, Bhopal, India with branch in ECE. I want to do my MS from the USA. How should I prepare?

SK
Shubham Kumar Posted On : August 28th, 2021
Studied B.E. Mechanical Engineering at UIT RGPV Bhopal (2019)

To get admission to an MS degree from any US university there are 3 different important factors - GPA; GRE and TOEFL scores and SOP supported by LOR’s.

  1. The first factor has to be maintained at your previous academic place. You must score above the minimum grade to be eligible to sit in the entrance exam. Focus on the coursework and score as high as possible.
  2. In the junior year of your academic degree, start preparing for the GRE and TOEFL because they are not easy and can create a little bit of a problem.
  3. The third factor is the SOP supported by the LOR’s. Here SOP means a letter of recommendation and LOR is the professor who taught you the courses. Find a faculty who will help you in your research and write a supervised thesis to be included in the SOP which can prove to be a great benefit for you.

Try to answer few questions by yourself about the purpose of the degree. Will it really be helpful in the future? Form small steps and slowly go for the final decision. Optimize your plan after you get the answers to these questions and then formulate a plan.

What are the best colleges in India apart from ISI Kolkata, DSE, and IGIDR for MS in economics? (My criteria for best includes faculty, curriculum, pedagogy, placements, and alumni base)

RC
Rajib Chatterjee Posted On : September 13th, 2021
B.Sc in Mathematics (college major) & Physical Sciences,Jadavpur University (2019)

ISI Delhi is a better option as it is far better than ISI Kolkata for MS. Saint Xavier’s College, Kolkata is also a very good college along with Saint Xaviers, Mumbai.

If faculty profiles, cost structure, placements with a package ranging around 7 to 9 lakhs, alumni, and acceptance rate are considered, here’s a list of all those universities which offer you all of the above mentioned.

  • DSE
  • ISI (Kolkata, Delhi)
  • IGIDR
  • MSE
  • JNU (CITD, CESP)
  • Department of Business Economics (DU), GIPE
  • UoH
  • CDS, Trivandrum
  • IITM, IITK
  • Jadavpur University

The school of economics does not offer an MS in economics. IGIDR offers a Master of Science but not a master of research which is offered by the most reputed IITM in Financial Economics.
