Should I take admission in CUSAT?

SJ
Sudesh Jaiswal Posted On : August 8th, 2023
B.Tech Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology (2017)

Whether you should take admitted to CUSAT or not depends on your personal goals and what you are looking for in a university. CUSAT is highly-regarded in India, known for its strong programs in engineering, technology, and science. Its credibility can further be assessed through the ratio of North and South Indian students on the campus which is almost 50:50. This means CUSAT is well known only among South Indians but also among North Indians.

CUSAT has two campuses, one in Cochin SOE and another in Alleppey - CUCEK. The placement scenario is somewhat similar on both campuses.

Before getting admission here, you need to know that the only key to getting placed is good grades and no backs. You won’t be spoon-fed the professor's notes here and will have to survive on your own. If you are enthusiastic, then only come here.

However, you should research more about its program offerings to determine if they align with your interests and career goals.

Which is better, CUSAT or CET?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : August 7th, 2023

CUSAT is your best bet if you are willing to pursue a Masters's or PG.

CUSAT has the freedom to design the curriculum for its students that suits their needs perfectly and imparts quality education. It has highly experienced professors who are keen to train the students and don’t just teach for the sake of completing the syllabus. CET on the other hand follows the KTU syllabus, one of the most average institutes of Kerala so the quality of education is sacrificed a lot.

In CET, professors sometimes are just transferred by the government, which never is the case with CUSAT. Additionally, CUSAT received huge funds from the government to support its large-scale research projects.

Ultimately, CUSAT is a better choice than CET for Masters while CET is a better option for Bachelor.

How is the CUSAT fire and safety branch?

SJ
Sonal Jain Posted On : February 19th, 2021
CUSAT (2019)

BTech Safety and Fire Engineering at CUSAT is a lucrative branch with great career opportunities. Almost 90% of students graduate with a placement offer. But the career outcome of the institute is limited since it is not a mainstream branch. You may face problems in the future if you want to go for competitive examinations like GATE. Go for this branch, only if you are sure that you want a career in this field. Since not many institutes offer this engineering degree, the competition is less. It is easy to secure a good placement opportunity.

Course Highlights:

  • This course is great for people who want to make their career in Process Safety Engineering or Technical Safety Engineering.
  • It is not true that students of this branch get positions like Safety Officer or Fire Officer after completing the degree. Students of this course get a little better technical jobs.
  • There are many cool small companies in the vicinity of Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, or NCR. These companies offer good technical jobs. Although the initial salary package may be less, you will have the opportunity to improve your career.
  • You can also opt for off-campus placements and apply to companies directly.

The above discussion should give you an idea about the Safety and Fire Engineering at CUSAT.

How is cusat fire and safety branch?

SS
Shridhar Sriraman Posted On : August 7th, 2023

One of my friends shed light on the actual scenario of the Fire and Safety Department of CUSAT

  • The syllabus is highly illogical and difficult to comprehend so students often lose their interest while studying.
  • Students who miss any chapter or topic in the curriculum are given a compartment that they have to clear by working very hard alongside completing the huge CUSAT curriculum.
  • During placements, the visiting recruiters set high cutoffs around 8–8.5 GPA in all semesters with no backlogs.
  • The students who clear the written exam are called in for an interview which is very challenging. Students who clear the interview are offered lucrative packages only to realize after joining the company that the CTC was misleading and inflated.
  • Fire and Safety students have no job opportunities in off-campus placements at all.

So, I will recommend you to not join the Fire and Safety branch in CUSAT at any cost.

Is marine engineering good in CUSAT?

RB
Rituraj Bose Posted On : May 5th, 2021
Studied at School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology (2019)

I have a few friends at CUSAT, according to them, the Marine Engineering program offered by CUSAT is quite good. However, the number of boys in the branch is more. As girls mostly refrain from joining Marine Engineering.

Being said that, the placement statistics for the branch are quite good. Here is a brief highlight of 2020 placement for the branch.

Average CTC

3 LPA

Highest CTC

5 LPA

Top Recruiters

MOL, Fleet, Synergy

Job Roles

Marine Engineer

Compared to other BTech branches the Marine Engineering branch enjoys less freedom. The department is 1 km away from the BTech college of CUSAT and the rules are a bit strict too.

Is uniform needed in CUSAT?

SR
Samar Rao Posted On : April 21st, 2021
B.Tech from Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2017)

Yes, there is a uniform in Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). But the uniform is only for UG Engineering students. P.G students of M.Tech, M.Sc, PhD, etc, do not have any dress code.

Let’s see the uniform of these branches.

  • School Of Engineering: For boys apple green color shirt and dark navy and grey trouser. Uniform for girls is apple green color kurta and dark navy and grey pajama.
  • Marine Engineering: Marine Engineering has its own Dress code.
  • Other departments such as Polymer & Rubber, Instrumentation, Photonics do not have a uniform. Students are free to wear any decent dress to the class.

Therefore, there are different dress codes for different schools. Apart from these, students of B.A LL.B, MBA, M.Com also have their specific dress code.

Which is better, CUSAT or IISER?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 7th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

If you are a true science lover, then IISERs are the best option for you. Although institutes like IISc, NISER, CEBS, IACS, and a few IITs, also offer similar science-oriented degrees IISERs resources, exposure, and research culture are second to none.

IISERs offer a 5 year integrated BS-MS degree which helps avoid the hassle of applying for a Bachelor’s and a Master’s separately.

So, if you are a research enthusiast and want to pursue a long-term educational program to fuel your passion, then IISERs will serve you best. However, CUSAT can be considered if you are looking for a course or opportunity that is unique to CUSAT only.

What is the eligibility criterion for NRI quota in CUSAT?

AB
Ahalya Bose Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Studied at Cochin University (2019)

There is no special eligibility criteria for NRI quota seats in CUSAT. You need a valid CAT rank to get admission through NRI seats.

To apply for admission through the NRI quota seats, there are two options:

  1. Apply for the NRI option during CUSAT form-filling. The form fee for candidates (except CGW candidates) opting for the NRI seats is an additional Rs. 5,000.

OR

  1. If the NRI seats are not filled, you can get admission in these seats during spot admission. For this, the candidate has to pay extra security money

(> Rs.1,00,000) which is refunded after the completion of the course.

The NRI quota seats cost more during admissions and also the semester fee is slightly higher for NRI quota seats.

Will I get admission in CUSAT with 6615 rank in spot round?

AB
Ahalya Bose Posted On : August 16th, 2023
Studied at Cochin University (2019)

The closing ranks for CUSAT CAT 2022 for general category in different branches in B.Tech are as follows-

Course

Closing Rank

Computer Science and Engineering

1651

Naval Architecture and Ship Building

618

Electronics and Communication Engineering

2662

Electrical and Electronics Engineering

2970

Information Engineering

2617

Safety and Fire Engineering

1855

Polymer Science and Engineering

2330

Instrumentation Technology

2498

Mechanical Engineering

2321

Civil Engineering

3151

As you can see, for a general category candidate, the closing ranks did not go beyond 3000 in the previous year. However, for an SC/ST candidate, the closing ranks are more relaxed. Also, if you are from some other state, 50% seats are reserved for Keralite students.

During CUSAT spot allotment, you can get the seats that are left or not filled up. These seats are filled rank-wise. Speaking statistically, a lot of students who are above you rank-wise will show up during the spot allotment. So, your chances depend upon the number of candidates above you who show up on that day.
