What is your review of Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (IIT BHU)?
My review of IIT BHU will be based on some very common parameters.
- Infrastructure: The academic buildings are not air-conditioned and are equipped with obsolete instruments. The hostels are surrounded by natural beauty but the living conditions are pathetic with cramped rooms and dirty toilets. The poor LAN connections are a major major problem here.
- Faculty: The faculty again is very disappointing. some even lack basic knowledge and some are too arrogant to guide the students. The answer sheets are checked in a disorganized way and the pedagogy adopted is old school. So here, you will have to completely depend on self-study.
- Research: The majority of the faculty focuses on administrative tasks and fails to encourage students to research work. The institute has no globally recognized research work to date.
- Facilities: The library has poorly organized books and lacks good study material. The LAN network is another major issue faced by students here. The departments are closed by 6 ok and the library is locked by 10 pm. This is a major hindrance during exams.
- Campus life: The frequent student activities make the campus life of IIT BHU lively and dynamic. A number of activities are organized in IIT-Gymkhana by the students and Kashi Yatra is the annual cultural festival of the institute. There are amazing sports facilities like huge grounds and fields for Cricket, Football, Badminton, and Tennis.
- Placements: IIT BHU has one of the best placements among the top IITs. Currently, IIT Bhu Placements 2023 is being held and around 474 offers and 305 PPOs have been made. IIT BHU's highest CTC was recorded at INR 1.2 CPA. A total of 117 recruiters took part in IIT BHU Placements 2023. Top recruiters included Airbnb India, Uber, Microsoft, Accenture, Piramal, etc. Last year the highest CTC stood at INR 2.05 CPA which was offered by UBER.
Overall, IIT BHU is a great choice if you are willing to sacrifice the hostel conditions and self-study.
What is the placement percentage of IIT BHU mechanical?
IIT BHU does not release branch-wise placements so I will be talking about IIT BHU placements as a whole. As per the official data, IIT BHU highest package 2023 stood at INR 1.2CPA. This high package was offered by Graviton Research Capital. In addition to this,1,000+ offers were made including 305 PPOs. The total number of recruiters that visited on day one of IIT BHU placements 2023 was 308.

The placements scenario of each branch is witnessing gradual growth but the maximum number of students were placed from the Mechanical Engineering and Technology Department. Some of the major recruiters of IIT BHU, Varanasi include EXL, Wipro, Tata Steels, Oracle, Morgan Stanley, and Maruti.
Did I make a mistake by choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE?
It's difficult for me to say whether choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE was a mistake without more information about your specific circumstances and goals. Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Varanasi are highly respected institutions, and both offer strong Computer Science programs that are rightly comparable in almost every aspect.
The placement scenario is similarly decent at both institutes with very little emphasis on research. The active Coding Club/ CSEA at IIT Guwahati gives it a slight edge over others. Both the institutes are excellent choices for whatever you want to do after graduation be it research, open source development, or a stable job.
The only distinguishing feature is the weather as IIT Guwahati has better weather conditions than IIT BHU. However, this flaw is compensated by better connectivity of Varanasi being on the mainland.
How would you rank IIT BHU among other IITs?
IIT BHU is counted among the top engineering institutes in the country. For B.Tech, IIT BHU ranking in India is 14 by NIRF 21. The ranking declined in 2021, compared to last year. In 2020, NIRF ranked the institute 11th among the top engineering colleges. The Week 2021 ranked IIT BHU 8th for overall.
Are BHU and IIT BHU the same institute ?
Although BHU and IIT BHU share the same campus, these are not the same. BHU is a central university that consists of many faculties and departments. IIT BHU used to be a part of BHU until it become an IIT. Now, it is an autonomous institute and works independently according to the IIT rules and regulations. BHU authority doesn’t have any authority over the management and decision of IIT BHU.
But these two institutes share some common campus facilities such as auditorium, badminton-squash court, swimming pool, etc.
What are the various things in IIT BHU that other IITs lack?
There are many factors that set apart IIT BHU from other IITs.
- Being an old institute it has a huge alumni base.
- Everyyear many students from the institute get selected in GSoC. In 2021, a total of 23 students were selected for Google Summer of Code.
- As an IIT BHU student, you will have access to the IIT library as well as the general BHU library.
- The vast college campus is beautiful and full of greenery.
- The campus has happening hangout places like Assi Ghat, Limbdi corner.

There are numerous Companies/Startup Firms that are founded by IIT BHU alumni and are successful too. Since the list is very vast so I would like to mention some of them-
- ShopClues one of the leading Online Market Place founded by Mr. Sanjay Sethi, IIT BHU Mechanical Alumnus.
- Husk Power Limited founded by Gyanesh Pandey (Electrical 1999) and Manoj Sinha (Electronics 1999). This company work towards the production of Electricity from Rice Husks in Rural Area of Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
- Motion JEE founded by Mr. Nitin Vijay an Alumnus of the Ceramic Department of 2007 IIT BHU. Motion JEE is the leading Coaching Institute of India which provides Quality Education to Students preparing for IIT JEE, Boards, Olympiads like KVPY, INPho, INCho, IMO, etc.

What are the must do things at IIT BHU?
Here are a few things for your ‘to do list’ at IIT BHU.
- Explore the city and its surroundings. The narrow alleys, ghats, strange temples, and their age-old construction will enchant you.
- Try local food, lassi, thandai, paan. The best places for trying these delicacies are Kaashi Ghat, Bhandar, etc.
- You can just roam around the campus with your friends. It is vast and beautiful.
Which things make IIT (BHU) Varanasi different from the other IITs?
Here are some of the things that make IIT BHU stand out.
- IIT BHU slays GSoC selections. 23 students of IIT BHU were selected for Google Summer of Code’21 and one student was selected as the student mentor.
- It has a large alumni base. Some of the notable alumni of the institute are Pulickel Ajayan (well-known scientist in the field of Carbon Nanotubes), Nikesh Arora (Chief business officer and senior vice president at Google), Krishan Kant (Former vice president of India).
- The campus is huge. You will need to get transportation, to get one department to another.
- IIT BHU is the only IIT that offers courses and research in Ceramics and Pharmaceutical Engineering.
What is the latest branch change criteria at IIT (BHU)?
As per the latest branch change criteria at IIT BHU, the number of incoming students to a branch after a branch change should not surpass 10% of the current students in that branch. For instance, if the Mechanical branch has 87 students enrolled in the first year, then the number of students that can change their branch to Mechanical is 10% of 87 = 8.7. Then 8 students are eligible for branch change from Mechanical
The application for branch change is usually invited after the end of the first year.
