Should I choose mechanical or civil engineering?

SA
Saransh Agarwal Posted On : February 22nd, 2022
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Cars and Automobiles, Sikkim Manipal University (2016)

Mechanical and Civil Engineering are core branches of engineering and both offer good future prospects. You should choose one according to your interest.

  • Both Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering require good knowledge of Applied and Material Physics. If you are interested in Physics, you should consider other branches of engineering.
  • Even though the base of these branches is Physics, the syllabus differs widely. So you should take a look at the syllabus for both branches before choosing one.
  • Talk to the people who are currently working in these domains and get to know what exactly they are doing. This can help you a lot to select the right course for you.
  • It will be better if you take a look at the M.Tech syllabuses for both branches as well. This will clear your vision in case you want to pursue higher studies in the future.
  • You will get decent job opportunities from either of these branches. There are govt sector jobs as well as the private sector.

So, factor in all these points and see what interests you more.

How are placements in mechanical engineering at BITS Pilani?

SK
Sneha Kanojia Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

BITS Pilani recently concluded its placement drive for this year and the average package stood at INR 30.37 LPA whereas the highest package stood at INR 60.75 LPA.

The Institute does not release branch-wise packages and thus I consulted a friend who was a part of the BITS Pilani placement drive 2021. As per the information obtained from her, around 80% of the students of the mechanical branch got placed. The average salary package offered was 13 LPA and the highest salary package offered was 40 LPA by Daikin for the mechanical course. Decent roles were offered to students of this branch.

Here is a branch-wise analysis of BITS Pilani Placements 2023:

Have I done a mistake in choosing IIT Delhi mechanical over DTU CS? I preferred to do CS, but due to ego, I chose IIT Delhi.

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 1st, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

I don’t think anyone choosing IIT Delhi over any other engineering college has made a wrong decision given the opportunities and life experiences that come with it. While both are crucial, your choice of Institute is more important than your branch.

Here is a friend's journey for your reference l was a BTech student (Civil) at IIT BHU with a rank of 3600.

  • First, he completed a Nanodegree program from Udacity in Self Driving Cars and Machine learning
  • Next, he worked as a Derivative Trader in Future First where he performed Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms.
  • After gaining great experience and exposure he joined Quantela Inc for 2 Years where he worked as a Data Scientist.
  • Today, after a lot of job switches and immense experience he is working at Derq in Dubai as a Machine Learning Scientist and doing Online MS from Georgia Tech University in Computer Science.

This journey of a 7-pointer Civil Branch student to a high-tech CS company proves that branch does not matter in the end. He made the most of his campus life and kept struggling to switch his branch and eventually succeeded. That being said, you have made the right decision as only IIT Delhi can give you the right set of opportunities and exposure and not DTU.

Which is better for mechanical engineering - the NIT in Calicut or BITS Goa?

DK
Deepika Khatri Posted On : August 24th, 2021
Studied Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Calicut

If you are fine with the higher fee structure of BITS Goa, then it will be a better choice for you. The infrastructure of both colleges is similar to each other but the alumni network is better at BITS Goa compared to NIT Calicut.

But if you are interested in mechanical engineering and want to pursue it as your passion, then you should probably choose NIT Calicut. The placement records of the Mechanical department in core companies are better at NIT Calicut. The average package offered is also higher than BITS Goa. Many students opt for jobs in non-core companies especially in the IT sector from BITS Goa and they learn coding too during their graduation.

If you are looking for a job related straight to what you have studied, then choose NIT Calicut. However, if you have a plan to go for higher education, probably abroad, then BITS Goa will be a better choice. Its alumni network will also help you a lot in securing a job in a reputed company.

How is the mechanical department at IIT Guwahati? How are the placements and the campus life?

PT
Pragya Tripathi Posted On : January 5th, 2023
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering & Product Design, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) (Graduated 2018)

The Mechanical Department is one of the departments at IIT Guwahati that is actively involved in research, competitions (robotics, automobile development, etc.), academics, and so on. It is also one of the largest departments in terms of faculty, Ph.D. scholarships, and available equipment. Almost all of the professors are friendly and eager to assist students.

Placements in IIT Guwahati's mechanical engineering department are very good for B.tech students, with 87% of students placed in PSUs and core companies this year. The rest went into software development, analytics, marketing, and research. As of now, this department has never looked more alive. The campus is an undeniable beauty that will provide an unforgettable experience. BTech and BDes students received the highest domestic and international packages, totaling INR 1.2 crore per year and INR 72 LPA, respectively.

Which is better: BITS Pilani Hyd mechanical or VIT Vellore CS?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : June 28th, 2023

Rather than focusing on the institutes, it’s best to give importance to your branch. I know a friend who gave up on BITS Hyderabad Mechanical production for core Mechanical at VIT. When I asked her the reason she told me that for her it was the branch that mattered more and VIT offered the branch of her choice.

So I will advise you to do the same. Analyze where your interests lie and choose the institute accordingly.

How are the mechanical placements at SVNIT Surat?

KM
Kaushika Mishra Posted On : May 21st, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (2017)

Placement at SVNIT Surat is great as informed by some of my friends studying there. Here are the recent placement highlights for SVNIT Surat.

  • The highest package offered here is 37.50 LPA while the average CTC ranges from 4-7 LPA.
  • In order to get a placement to try to secure a CGPA pointer of above 6.5 by the end of your degree. It's safe if your CGPA is 7 and above. One of the best ways is to do that, get a good pointer in the first year (8 and above), and then continue to secure above 6.5 to keep it above 7.
  • Try to gain all your basic knowledge in all the mechanical subjects on point. This will surely help you out in technical interviews.
  • If you truly have the interest but don't have a good CGPA pointer, then it will be very hard to qualify for placements, and you will regret it later on. Students with marks 60% above can apply, but the final shortlist will only have people with marks above 65%-70% depending on the people applied.
  • Participate in a decent amount of co-curricular activities. You need to make sure that you know a lot about the core concepts about the subjects of your interest.

Obviously, the placements are great because of the NIT tag, but it will be of no use if you hold a second-class degree, with a lot of back papers. So, I would like to advise you to just focus on your studies.
