Can I prefer SPJIMR over IIM IKL?

PZ
Pritesh Zaveri Posted On : March 6th, 2023
MBA in Finance (college major), S P Jain School of Global Management (Graduated 2019)

Yes, one can definitely choose SPJIMR over the three IIMs IKL. To answer the why part, I have individually compared each IIM to SPJIMR and justified why SPJIMR is a better choice in all the 3 cases.

IIM Indore

SPJIMR over IIM Indore is a choice as everyone is aware of the huge batch size at IIM Indore which becomes a major obstacle during placements. Moreover, it gives a lot of weightage to past academics so it’s not a good option for those who fared average during 10 and 12 but are now ready to face challenges.

IIM Kozhikode

The only aspect in which Kozhikode has an upper hand when compared to SPJIMR is the campus beauty and I am sure this is not the most important criterion for judging a college at all. SPJIMR offers a more innovative and structured curriculum, a smaller batch size combined with the chance to live in the city of Dreams. The only aspect that it lacks in comparison to Kozhikode is the fact that you have to choose your specialization during admission itself whereas Kozhikode gives you a year's time to do so. Then again if you are certain of your specialization, nothing is better than SPJIMR.

IIM Lucknow

Honestly speaking many might consider IIM Lucknow a tad bit better than SPJIMR and rightly so. When it comes to consulting and Finance, IIM Lucknow is a better option. It also attracts the best profile and not the kind accepted at SPJIMR. Additionally, the batch comprises IITians majorly who are there for the tag. These geniuses create tough competition which is lacking in the case of SPJIMR. This turns out to be a benefit for SPJIMR as students who are not at the top are able to get good roles at top consulting firms. So in terms of Finance, Consulting, and IIM tag, IIM Lucknow seems to be better but is similar to SPJIMR in all other aspects.

If you are deciding between IIM Lucknow and SPJIMR for Finance, it is important to weigh your options. Here is what you need to know about IIM Lucknow's Finance faculty and placements:

  • Placements: IIM Lucknow Finance placements have been doing well, with a good number of front-end roles coming to the campus. The highest salary for Finance stood at INR 53.34 LPA and the Mean salary at INR 32.21 LPA. Some of the companies that recruited from IIM Lucknow for Finance roles include JP Morgan, Citibank, Morgan Stanley, Black Rock, Kotak, Investec, Avendus, Arga Investments, Spark Capital, Ernst & Young IBD group, Piramal Group (Capital Markets), Deutsche Bank, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, Nomura, Standard Chartered, and HSBC.
  • Front-end roles: Many companies offer front-end roles at IIM Lucknow, including JP Morgan, Citibank, Morgan Stanley, Black Rock, Kotak, Investec, Avendus, Arga Investments, Spark Capital, Ernst & Young IBD group, Piramal Group (Capital Markets), and foreign markets desks based out of India like Deutsche Bank, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, Nomura, Standard Chartered, and HSBC.
  • Learning and Faculty: The Institute offers a good number of electives in Finance ranging from subjects like Investor Psychology, Quantitative applications in finance, Project Finance, Corporate Banking & Risk Management, etc. The faculty is able to provide exposure through guest lectures and industry workshops.

On the other hand, SPJIMR may not have as many big-name companies visiting for Finance roles compared to IIM Lucknow. From what has been reported in the media, some notable names missing at SPJIMR during the past 2 years include Citibank (front-end markets role), JP Morgan (front-end markets role), Nomura, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. However, Barclays visited SPJIMR but not IIM Lucknow in the last 2 years.

When choosing between the two institutes, it is important to consider your personal goals and interests. Do your research and decide which institute aligns better with your career aspirations.

What are the chances of a score-based call from SPJIMR?

SN
Sneha Nagaraju Posted On : March 6th, 2023
MBA Finance, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (2020)

My friend has got both a profile-based and a score-based call. He had to choose between IIM Indore and SPJIMR so he eventually went for the SPJIMR. IIM Indore alumni told him about the issues the students face during placements owing to the huge batch size. The recruiters offer the best packages to the top students and the rest of the batch ends up with average packages. This made him choose SPJIMR.

As he went for the interview, he soon realized that the other candidates had scores much better than his (97+). This disheartened him with the lowest score (96 something). He knew clearly he had zero chances and left right after the first round. He further said that the campus wasn’t that appealing and IIM Indore and FMS seemed to have better infrastructure. So the bottom line is the chances of getting a score-based call from SPJIMR are very low.

Which college should I prefer for an MBA between IIT KGP VGSOM NMIMS Mumbai IIM Ranchi SP Jain marketing SIBM Pune and IIT Delhi DMS?

AD
Adiksha Das Posted On : March 13th, 2023
Studied at Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi

When choosing your desired colleges, it is recommended to consider the following options in the given order:

  1. SP Jain - Despite the high fee, the maximum salary package offered was INR 52.16 LPA, while the average salary package stood at INR 32.06 LPA during 2022 placements, and the job roles offered are on par with top-tier institutions like FMS or IIM ABC. Missing out on this opportunity would not be wise.
  2. IIM Ranchi/IIT Delhi - If you are an engineer, it is recommended to go for IIT Delhi as the MBA course structure is heavily inclined towards statistics and technology. On the other hand, if you are interested in pursuing a career in HR, IIM Ranchi is the best option due to its reputation for providing excellent HR placements and the prestigious IIM tag.
  3. SIBM Pune - Although not on par with the previously mentioned B Schools, this college is one of the biggest brands you can opt for. The average salary for the 2021-22 batch was INR 23.06 LPA and the job roles offered were on par with the new IIMs. Additionally, you will benefit from a robust alumni network due to the college's age.
  4. NMIMS - While this college is located in Mumbai and might be a good option for students from that area, the high fee can be a concern. However, it is known for its Finance specialization.
  5. IIT KGP - As this college only accepts engineers, the batch will not be diverse, and neither will the job roles offered. Given the other options provided, this college may not be the best choice for you.

It is important to consider each option carefully and choose the one that best fits your needs and career goals. Take your time, do your research, and make an informed decision.

PN
Payal Niharika Posted On : March 6th, 2023

SPJIMR GMP eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • GMAT [minimum 550]

or

  • GRE [minimum 300]

or

  • CAT [minimum 80 percentile]

Other than this, you require a decent profile to increase your chances of conversion.

SPJIMR provides immense placement support because outside India there is no placement culture. You have to apply to companies and get a job. But you get a lot of assistance from colleges and alumni of both SPJIMR and partner colleges. SPJIMR alumni are placed in big firms like

  • Mckinsey
  • BCG
  • Credit Suisse
  • JP Morgan Chase
  • Procter & Gamble

To gain admission to SPJIMR, Mumbai, there are two selection methods available. The first is profile-based calls, where your profile is reviewed, and you may receive a call based on your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, work experience, and other relevant factors. To qualify for a call, you'll need to have a minimum overall percentile of 85 and a sectional percentile of 70.
