Both NIT Suathkal and BITS Pailni are the dream colleges of most engineering aspirants owing to their high reputation and excellence in the field of education. However, NIT is a government college whereas BITS Pilani is a private engineering college that costs much more. Here are a few points you would like to consider before making the final decision

  1. First of all, you need to determine what you are looking for from your degree. If you want to associate yourself with a brand then NIT has better recognition globally. Letters of Recommendation from Surathkal professors are very valuable.
  2. NIT Surathkal has a better location being near the IT hub, Bangalore. The opportunities offered both on and off campus are plentiful.
  3. Infrastructure-wise, NIT Surathkal is better mainly because it has its own private beach. Additionally, hostels are well-built and the facilities are at par with IIT standards.
  4. NIT Surathkal charges very low fees in comparison to BITS.

So, I feel it's better to opt for NIT Surathkal!

Which should I aim for: BITS Goa CS or CS in NIT Warangal/Trichy/Surathkal?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 6th, 2023

You can opt for NIT Warangal even if you get admission to another branch. They have an interesting branch-changing policy. If you are ready to work harder, then you can opt for any other degree and score high marks in the first year, which will allow you to switch to CS after your first year. This institute offers quality education, good infrastructure, and good placement support to its students.

So, you can choose NIT Warangal for CS

Is mechanical engineering good in NIT Surathkal?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 15th, 2023

As a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering student at NITK, I am sharing some facts about my department-

  • Faculty- The Mechanical faculty is strict. However, when approached for guidance, the teachers don’t hesitate in showing their support for students.

One of my friends wanted to work at the IITs. He told one of the professors about the same. The teacher mailed an IIT Hyderabad professor and arranged for my friend to work with him. My friend also wrote a conference paper under the same IIT Hyderabad professor.

  • Placements- The placements are good for the Mechanical department. The batch strength for B.Tech is around 150 students, even then, around 90% are placed during campus placements.
  • Labs and Workshops- The department offers several labs, like Strength of Materials lab, Fluids lab, Fuels lab, Pyrolysis lab, IC Engines lab, etc.

Several workshops are organized by the department, like Metal fitting workshop, Carpentry workshop, Lathe machine workshop, etc. The campus also offers virtual labs, which are present in some IITs and NIT Surathkal only.

Apart from these UG labs, there are several PG labs as well. UG and PG students can also work with each other.

  • Extracurricular activities- Apart from your academics, you can join various clubs at NITK. Some of these are- FSAE Racing club, BAJA Racing club, IEEE, IE, Rotaract, Artist forum, Photography club, etc.
  • Library- The central library contains lots of reference books and articles.

Overall, the Mechanical department of NIT Surathkal is quite good. In fact, NITK is known for its CS, Mining and Mechanical studies.

My SAT score is 1850. Can I get admission to NIT, Surathkal in the IT branch?

AP
Arun Pal Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
B.Tech Information Technology, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

Firstly, congratulations on scoring this in SAT. The grading here is quite relative. Normally, the state toppers, IIT 3000-8000 rankers, 96% to 98% CBSE scorers will be your immediate competition with your rank of 1850. Although, there are good chances that you might have to wait for a few rounds to finish and then maybe in the third or fourth round you might get lucky.

The rank mentioned by you here is quite a fair enough rank. It is also advised here that you have a look at SAT scores as well for the past academic year. There is a slight trend that the scores might vary every year depending on overall performance of all applicants.

Since much shuffling and reshuffling takes place in all the branches including IT in all the admission rounds, it is worthwhile that you wait a longer and try in the third (or fourth) round of counseling.

Which is better for CSE, NIT Warangal or Surathkal?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : August 18th, 2023

In my opinion, if you are getting a top NIT, then choosing CSE will be a better decision unless you are interested in any other specific branch. As far as comparing the CSE branch in Warangal and Surathkal, both offer similar opportunities and academic experience.

Given all the similarities, choosing one between these two NITs depends more on your personal choices such as proximity to home and crowd. If you are from the home state of Karnataka choose Surathkal but if you are from the home state of Warangal, choose NIT Warangal.

I would recommend you to go for NIT Warangal as it has better opportunities if you are inclined towards research. The alumni base is huge and there is even an innovation garage where the ideas of students are implemented.

Which college is better, NIT, Surathkal or BITS, Hyderabad? Why?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 16th, 2023

BITS Hyderabad is a private college. On the other hand, NIT Surathkal is a government college. So it won’t be correct to compare the two. Both have their own pros and cons.

I am listing below the strengths of each-

  • NIT Surathkal-
  • It has affordable fees which are much lower than BITS colleges.
  • It has a strong alumni network as it was established in 1960. The alumni network of BITS colleges is quite strong too.
  • It is situated in the beautiful western ghats and has a private beach of its own.
  • The campus life is great. There are good extracurricular facilities.
  • BITS Hyderabad
  • As it is a private college, it has better infrastructure and faculty than NITK.
  • It has a better hostel and mess facility.
  • The peer groups are better at BITS Hyderabad. This is because it admits students purely on a merit basis.
  • There is no minimum attendance criteria at BITS Hyderabad.

Both the colleges are well-renowned. You can choose either of them for your higher studies, based on your personal preferences.

Which college is better, NIT Surathkal, BITS Hyderabad, or NIT Trichy CSE (considering all factors)?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 15th, 2023

These three colleges can be compared with each other on several factors. I am listing below these factors-

  • College tag- Both the tags- ‘BITSIAN’ and ‘NITIAN’ are reputable. Both will help you in your career. But as far as international recognition is concerned, a BITSIAN tag holds more value.
  • Peer Group- BITS Hyderabad has a better crowd because of no reservation scheme. NITs have caste based reservation and home state quota.
  • Infrastructure- BITS Hyderabad is the newest BITS, so it has a better infrastructure than the other two colleges. Its infrastructure is better than BITS Pilani as well. NITs are government institutions which receive government funding mostly for research, and rarely for infrastructural development.
  • Placements - BITS Hyderabad offers good CSE placements, at par with NIT Trichy and NIT Surathkal. Its placement record is improving with time. However, these NITs offer better placements for core branches due to PSU visits.
  • Faculty- The faculty is top notch at all these colleges. However, NITs experience a shortage of professors which causes problems for the students.
  • Alumni network- All the BITS campuses have a common alumni network- BITSAA. BITSAA is the second largest alumni network after the IITs. It is bigger than the alumni networks of these NITs.
  • Degree- All the BITS students are offered the same degree, irrespective of the BITS campus.
  • Research- In terms of research, NIT Trichy and NIT Surathkal are a better option.
  • Fees - The fees at BITS Hyderabad is quite high. NITs are government colleges, so their fees are low. BITS offer scholarships and scholar loans of 20 lakhs to students. You can definitely opt for NITs in case of financial constraints.

NIT Surathkal, NIT Trichy and BITS Hyderabad are all good colleges for your CSE degree. They are a much better choice than the new IITs. You can choose any of them based on your personal preference.

NIT Surathkal is better than Delhi engineering colleges like NSIT, DTU and IIIT Delhi because it offers a more diverse experience. Here are a few aspects to consider

  • Reputation : NIT Surathkal enjoys the status of being an Institute of National importance and is fully funded by the Central government whereas DTU, NSIT, and IIITD are state government universities
  • Research culture: NIT Surathkal has a rich research culture and facilities and is one of the institutes which is selected for funding from HEFA
  • Academics : NIT Surathkal is a clear winner as its academic environment and curriculum are way better than Delhi colleges. Every year many students win International awards.
  • Campus life: NIT Surathkal has a private beach with a lush green campus of 300 acres. Moreover, its crowd is much more diverse than Delhi colleges which have 85% quota for Delhites.
  • Location : Situated near the IT hub, Bangalore NIT Surathkal students are exposed to more opportunities and a better IT environment. Many Bangalore IT companies give preference to NITK Surathkal students.
  • Placements : NIT Surathkal achieves 100% placement and has a better variety of recruiters than Delhi colleges.
  • Coding Culture: NIT Surathkal has received good rankings in the ICPC Asia Contest and every year many students are selected for Google Summer of Code.

Which NIT is preferable for girls: NIT, Surathkal, Warangal, or Allahabad?

DB
Ditsha Banerjee Posted On : September 14th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

As a female student at NIT Surathkal, I can tell you about my experience at my own college.

I belong to North India, which is why the first few months were spent in homesickness. Your Bangalorean friends will grab every opportunity to visit their home every other weekend. You, on the other hand, would get to visit home once, during Dussehra for a week or so. But as time passes, the weather problem and homesickness will slowly subside. The campus organizes plenty of events all the time, so you won’t feel bored at all. Also, you’ll get to explore Mangalore and Manipal.

The girls’ mess food is pretty decent. Earlier, it’s difficult to adjust to hostel food, but you’ll adapt quickly. The girls’ mess serves dal and rice every afternoon and night. The dal is pretty decent. Even the dosas and idlis served during breakfast are pretty decent. Buttermilk is served every afternoon, and a cup of curd is served at night. Bread-jam-butter is available for breakfast. In the evening, snacks are served with tea/coffee/milk. The tea tastes pretty good.

Thrice a week, ice cream is served, and sweets are served once a week. Paneer is served twice a week. Veg Biryani is served in Sunday dinners. Each month, a grand dinner is organized with extra items on the menu like soup, salad, cornetto and sweets.

The hostel life at NIT Surathkal is pretty decent for girls. The hostel timings are lenient. First year girls need to be back by 8:30 pm. From 2nd year onwards, girls need to be back by 10 pm. NIT Surathkal also has a private beach of its own.

I don’t know about NIT Warangal or NIT Allahabad, but the college life of girl students is overall good at NIT Surathkal.
