How is ragging at NIT Calicut?

PC
Puneet Cherian Posted On : August 27th, 2021
B.Tech Computer Science, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2020)

One of my friends is in his last year and hasn’t experienced anything related to ragging. Although there might be some fun interaction with the seniors but no extremities that hurt.

Here are some insights of NIT Calicut in the context of ragging.

Dress code ragging

  • Although earlier you needed to be careful about wearing fancy clothes and accessories, now it's not a thing.
  • You can wear anything while being careful about your belongings which is common in every college.

Physical abuse

  • In the past incidents of beating up were heard but now due to proper affidavit and law enforcement, you won’t face anything like that.
  • If you are a fresher you might be asked to dance or do sit ups, etc.
  • Sometimes the seniors will tell you to address them as Sir’s and Maam’s.
  • However, if you see anything is going out of hand, a complaint can be lodged anytime and strict action will be taken.

Academic performance

  • Sometimes you will find seniors asking you to do their assignments, bunk classes, or not to take any part in any club activities, etc.
  • On the contrary, you can also find seniors who do not let you go out of track and prepare you for the upcoming workload.

My friend has done assignments and called his seniors sir but nothing more than that. Nobody is forced to do anything if somebody does then he will be subjected to strict punishments as mentioned above. Even the assignment thing doesn’t last for long as there have been many instances where teachers could identify the handwriting and many students have been caught in this act. So, you can relax as there are no chances for extreme ragging or bullying of any kind.

How do I reach NIT Calicut from Delhi?

NG
Nalini Guha Posted On : August 26th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut

First, you have to reach Calicut and for that, you can take a flight or train. I would suggest you take an Indigo flight from Delhi to Calicut airport. It’s a connecting flight via Mumbai and the duration is almost 5 hrs.

It's 32 km away from NIT and you can reach it either by Bus or Taxi. And it’s better to take Taxis because you will have to change the bus once you have reached Calicut city. Also, you can use the rail. It will take almost two and a half days to reach Calicut from New Delhi. NIT Calicut is 23 km which is approx 45 minutes journey from Calicut railway station. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available to be hired at the station.

Taking a bus is the cheapest, costing only Rs 19 per adult. The bus station is just a 5-minute walk from the railway station or you can even take an auto-rickshaw to the bus station. Ola cabs also have started their service in Calicut recently.

Moreover, there is a bus stop right in front of the NIT main gate and the Taxis can take you directly to the hostel campus or the administrative building.

What are the best and worst things about NIT, Calicut?

AB

B.tech Chemical Engineering, National institute of technology, Calicut (2019)

Having friends studying at NIT Calicut, I am well aware of both the positive and negative aspects of the institution. Let us go through it to give you a proper idea about the institute.

Positive aspects:

  • The majority of the faculties are dedicated and highly qualified and experienced. Libraries are well maintained. Academics is the biggest plus point of NITC.
  • You can opt for any mess on campus and you are not restricted to the mess of the hostel, where you reside. This helps you deal away from eating the same type of food daily.
  • Hostels are right next to the academic block which saves a lot of your time. There is a mini canteen inside the campus where you can get delicious food at affordable prices.
  • Climate is very pleasant at Calicut. The campus is picturesque and has a nice ambiance for studies.
  • Popular tourist spots like Ooty, Wayanad, Kodaikanal, Mahe, Goa are nearby and serve as good locations for your weekend trips.
  • Students rarely fail in exams. If at all someone fails, courses are given during vacation where you can learn concepts, reappear, and clear exams.

Negative aspects:

  • Girls hostels have a strict curfew. They should go back to their hostels before 7 PM. Even if there are some genuine reasons you are not allowed to stay out beyond 7 PM.
  • First-year students are not allowed to use laptops even though the curriculum needs one.
  • Internet facilities at the hostel are very weak. Only BSNL sim has good coverage in the area.
  • Hostels have no washing machine facility. There is a laundry service by the college which takes 5 days to a week to deliver back the clothes.
  • Summers can be pretty humid, hot, and unpleasant.

Just like the two faces of a coin, NITC has both positive and negative sides. From your perspective, if positives outshine negative aspects do consider joining NIT Calicut.

How good is NIT calicut ECE?

AT
Anand Tiwari Posted On : April 13th, 2021
B.tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

NITC is pretty good in terms of both curriculum and placement. But ECE in general is a vast branch where you have to study bits and pieces of electronics, Electrical engineering, Communication Engineering, and Computer Science. Initially, it might seem a bit overwhelming but once you get the hang of it, you will understand the beauty of the subject.

  • First-year concepts are general for all branches. You can spend time improving your coding skills as it's very important in the current scenario.
  • In the second year, you will learn about the basics of electronics and communication. Here you will come across basic concepts like solid-state devices, Network theory, logic designs, and many more. Look for internship opportunities from your second year so that you will get some good exposure. You can also work on some projects under your faculties.
  • Third-year is majorly dedicated to computer networks, digital signal processing, microprocessors, and controllers. You will get a wide range of electives to choose from including AI to VLSI. Prepare for GATE at this stage if you want to pursue higher education.
  • Fourth-year is all about placements, projects, and internships. 151 students from the 2019-20 batch availed of internship opportunities with an average stipend of 15K.

Which is better, NIT Calicut or NIT Rourkela?

AG
Atul Ghose Posted On : August 26th, 2021
B.Tech CSE, NIT Calicut (2020)

I have a friend from NIT Calicut and he was able to provide some information regarding their M.Tech in Offshore Structure.

  1. Offshore structures are currently one of the most promising fields in the future along with transportation engineering.
  2. It requires thorough knowledge in subjects such as FEM, Mathematics, and mechanics to be a successful offshore engineer. Additionally, the offshore industry pays more than a normal Structural consultancy as the structures are highly compounded.
  3. A beginner Structural engineer may not get very good pay as they are in large numbers and currently supply is more than demand.

As for NIT Calicut, it boasts of an outstanding Civil Department. However, the placement offered by the institute may not be that good. But you can manage to get jobs through off-campus placements. You can earn a lot in the field as you gain experience.

What is the one thing you regret not doing in your BTech life at NIT Calicut?

AS
Abhimanyu Singh Posted On : April 13th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

There are a bunch of things that you should do before you graduate from NIT Calicut which might sound simple and silly but worth looking back down the memory lane.

  • Scaling on the rooftop of MB and spending a night there chilling with your squad.
  • Spend some more nights doing midnight conversations with your friends.
  • Go on as many trips as you can when you still are out of your work-life pressure.
  • Complete your major project on time so that you can spend those final days of your college life stress-free and by doing things that you love.
  • Conduct thorough research on the company where you got placed so that you don't have to regret your decision later on. Look for outside job opportunities too. You never know about the best things which await you outside, especially in the CSE field.
  • Never miss a DJ night at a basketball stadium.
  • Take a midnight ride to Kappad. Serene beaches there will surely mesmerize you. A clean and empty beach with only a few locals is a perfect spot to get away with your friends.
  • Take a long stroll at night on your campus and admire its beauty when you are still there.

Tick all the things to do in your bucket list before graduating from Calicut. You never know what you will regret not doing when you still are a student.

How good is NIT Trichy or Calicut for my ESE preparation during an MTech?

RK
Rupali Kaur Posted On : September 10th, 2021
M.Tech Electronics Design And Technology, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

According to one of my friends' experiences, preparing for M.Tech along with your studies is very difficult. Often you do not get stipulated time to prepare for ESE due to the mini-projects and assignments that you get very frequently.

Also, you need to especially take care of your CGPA, but if you are not worried about the CGPA you can go ahead with preparing at the full pace like few other students who do the same.

Thus, we can conclude that preparing for ESE simultaneously is really a very big task. If you have the caliber of doing the same, you can follow your will and start accordingly.

Which is better for mechanical engineering - the NIT in Calicut or BITS Goa?

DK
Deepika Khatri Posted On : August 24th, 2021
Studied Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Calicut

If you are fine with the higher fee structure of BITS Goa, then it will be a better choice for you. The infrastructure of both colleges is similar to each other but the alumni network is better at BITS Goa compared to NIT Calicut.

But if you are interested in mechanical engineering and want to pursue it as your passion, then you should probably choose NIT Calicut. The placement records of the Mechanical department in core companies are better at NIT Calicut. The average package offered is also higher than BITS Goa. Many students opt for jobs in non-core companies especially in the IT sector from BITS Goa and they learn coding too during their graduation.

If you are looking for a job related straight to what you have studied, then choose NIT Calicut. However, if you have a plan to go for higher education, probably abroad, then BITS Goa will be a better choice. Its alumni network will also help you a lot in securing a job in a reputed company.

What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at NIT Calicut?

SG
Spandita Ghosal Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
Studied Chemical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

Starting a journey doesn’t require any tips as such. You just need to keep your morale high throughout the journey. Also, NIT, Calicut is an amazing place to study in. Yes whatever happens in these four years here, you're going to remember it for your lifetime.

Life at NITC can be segregated into two parts:

  • If you are from Northern India food might be a problem as well as the change of the climate. It will take some time to get used to.
  • If you are from Southern India you are familiar with the culture, climatic condition and food.

Here are some helpful facts for your joining in the first year:

  1. Keep your attendance in account, The faculties at NITC are really very strict and the attendance limit is 80%.
  2. Initially, seniors will be very mischievous and make you do notorious stuff and be harsh on you. But once all these are over they'd be extremely friendly and cooperative.
  3. Look upon your subjects: If you're an average student, keep your eyes out for Basic Electrical Sciences, Engineering Mechanics, and Physics in the first year.
  4. NITC hosts two of the most important fests in South India, Tathva and Ragam. So as a first year, take part in PAD and INFRA works and do your contribution to the college. It is also a great way to make contacts with seniors, which would be useful later.
  5. Balance academics and extracurricular activities: Give proper time for studies so that it will not create an additive burden during the exam time. Never leave your work pending.
  6. Visit places in and near NITC, Have your share of leisure. Take time out for yourself and to know the place you are going to be in for the major 4 years of your life.

Joining a club at the end of first year is essentialfor every student. It will not only help you to gain a lot of knowledge regarding things but also, develop social skills, and obtain many contacts.

Yes, 1st year will be a bit difficult for all but after 2–3 months you get habitual of everything so don’t worry much it’s a beautiful place to live in.
