Which is better, Data Science M.Tech from IIT Hyderabad, or Big Data Analytics Certification from IIM Bangalore?

SA
Shruti Agarwal Posted On : September 19th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

It all depends on your interest and future goals. If you want a career in the technical field, choose Data Science M.Tech from IIT Hyderabad. If you want to work in the management sector then doing Big Data Analytics certification from IIM Bangalore will be better. If you are interested in Big Data and want a technical career in the field, look for a technical institute. IIMs will not offer hands-on technical training in the field, it will rather cover the managerial aspect of it.

Why is IIM Calcutta not so talked-about as IIMA or IIMB?

DG
Deepak Gupta Posted On : November 24th, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2017)

I think IIM Calcutta is not as recognized or talked about as IIMA or IIMB because it did not gain fame from Bollywood. Bollywood movies have been shot at IIMA and IIMB. So they are more talked about than IIMC. It has nothing to do with its own facilities. That being said, some amazing features of IIM Calcutta are

  1. Top notch alumni base

  2. Beautiful campus: The campus of IIM Bangalore is not an average one. Its beautiful infrastructure and location give it a surreal ambiance.

  3. Amazing Placements: IIM Calcutta is the best for finance placements. Reputed banks like Merrill, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan and Chase, Goldman Sachs prefer students of IIM Calcutta over IIMA and IIMB. For consulting IIM Calcutta has all the top 4 Mckinsey, Bain, BCG and AT Kearney.

So nothing about IIM Calcutta is less than other IIMs. It just lacks the general fame, not the works.

What is so special about IIM Calcutta? It is one of the oldest IIMs in the country, but what makes it stand out from other institutes in imparting management education? Why would someone join IIM C?

RK

MBA from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2018)

Surely IIM Calcutta is the oldest and yet stands out the most from other IIMs. But trust me it has nothing to do with its campus, alumni, education, placement, extracurriculars or any other features. All the IIMs are equally good in all these aspects.

What makes IIM Calcutta different from them?

In reality, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore welcome students only who have been toppers throughout their life. Their academic reports are flawless. Be it their 10th or 12th or Undergraduate. They have never seen failure in their lives.

But in the case of IIM Calcutta, it has both genius students with flawless reports and people who have great CAT scores but below average undergrad or 10th and 12th scores. IIM Calcutta welcomes a mixed crowd and this is what sets it apart from other IIMs.

At IIM Calcutta, you will find peers who have failed or been to the lowest level once. But they have climbed the ladder of success with determination. Studying alongside people with such qualities makes education much more than just learning your subjects. You grow as a person. You don’t find people here, you find profiles. A manager needs to have these qualities in order to excel.

All the IIMs are great but it’s only IIM Calcutta that welcomes a mixed crowd.

Studied at IEM Kolkata (2019)

Some of my friends studied at IIM Bangalore. Like any other IIM, this institute is a bit costly. Also being among the top IIMs costs a little more.

The fees for the batch 2020-22 are said to be standing around 25 lakhs if not more. This includes Tuition fees, Library charges, Internet charges, course materials, Case permission royalties, Hostel room rent and service charges, Personal Accident Insurance, Alumni Activity, and Medical insurance.

The above-mentioned fee excludes Service Tax and any such kind of taxes. These taxes are applicable by law and are collected from the students at the prescribed rates.

Moreover a fee of Rs. 20,000 is collected as caution fees and as a security and an amount of Rs. 30,000 is to be paid each term in advance.

What is the life of a student at IIM-Bangalore like?

SH
Shrutosh Harshit Posted On : December 19th, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (Expected 2024)

To know more about the life of a student at IIM Bangalore, let’s go through these aspects.

Campus life: The campus and infrastructure of IIM Bangalore is something no one can stop talking about. It’s top notch well maintained.

Hostels: The hostel rooms are the best you can avail with almost everything like study table, rotating chair, notice board, white board, a big almirah, bookshelf, mirror and a bed. To get your room cleaned you can make a request through an online portal. The washrooms are exceptionally clean.

Connectivity: The campus enjoys a good Wi-Fi connection and has an additional LAN port.

Food: The mess food is served 4 times that is breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. The quality and taste of food is like no other mess facilities of India.

Academics: The academics here are very rigid and you will have to manage your time. The first semester is packed with projects, submissions and exams. The second semester welcomes the more engaging summer placements. Students will have to study for their subjects as well as prepare for the placements. So the first half of the second semester is extremely busy while the second half is relatively relaxed.

Culture: IIM Bangalore has a strong culture and your seniors always ensure that you are not facing any problem. They also arrange sector talks for placements, resume guidance, academic mentorship and help in interview preparation. There is a strong harmony among the seniors and juniors.

So life of an IIMB students is full of ups and downs but really enriched. They are lucky enough to experience such an amazing rollercoaster of life.

How was your IIM Bangalore interview experience?

SJ
Samyak Jain Posted On : December 19th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT Allahabad)

The following experience is that of my sister who has the following profile 95/93.8/8.9 (Bcom H Fresher). It was an online interview the duration of which was 20 minutes. The questions asked to her were as follows:

  • What is the difference between bcom and bcom hons?
  • Do honours have any significance?
  • What is your favourite subject?
  • What is the inflation rate?
  • What is the growth rate?
  • How to calculate inflation rate?
  • How will India recover from covid shock? (Lot of cross questioning)
  • Asked a lot of questions regarding balance sheet and it’s format
  • Difference between current assets and noncurrent assets
  • Difference between current liabilities and provisions
  • What is returns to a factor?
  • What is returns to a scale?
  • What are economies of scale?

Luckily my sister answered each and every question confidently.

Next came up the Case Study round wherein the interviewer asked:

On Wednesday, discounts on different items are given, so that sales could be increased. What is the concept involved? To this my sister answered Elasticity of demand and gave many other reasons like consumer behaviour, law of demand. They also asked her why she did not prefer work experience first. To this she told them that she was learning-oriented. Both the interviewers were quite convinced.

She got selected soon after.

Is the PGPBA offered by IIM Bangalore good? It would be great if someone from IIM Bangalore could comment on this.

SG
Siddhant Gupta Posted On : May 9th, 2022

Yes, the Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics (PGPBA) offered by IIM Bangalore is good. The program can be considered a subdivision of the PGP program and offers similar academics and placements.

The courses in Term-1 and Term-2 are common for PGP and PGPBA. From Term-3, PGPBA follows a well-designed analytics curriculum. Compared to PGP, the curriculum of PGPBA include more Mathematics. The mandatory subjects of PGPBA are offered as electives for PGP.

IIM Bangalore designed the PGPBA program for accumulating the growing demand for efficient professionals in the field of Business Analytics. IIM Bangalore placement highlights indicate that PGPBA students mostly get recruited in Banks, E-Commerce, and Consulting sectors.
