My sister was a part of this course at IIT KGP and she found it extremely interesting and aligned with her interests. The course is industry oriented covering a number of topics like
- Product Design
- Modeling of systems
- Software implementation and Verification
- Product Validation
Basically, all aspects of product design are covered under this course. In the First Semester, it covers topics related to Embedded systems, Control Engineering and Software Engineering and in the second semester, you are free to choose electives of your choice.
As far as placements are concerned, top big names like Robert Bosch, KPIT, Cognizant and Cypress Semiconductor visit the campus for placements.
However, interdisciplinary courses face a lot of issues during placements since this course is not known to many companies. This is because it falls under a different center named ATDC(Advanced Technology Development Center)
To prepare for the interview one needs to go through concepts of signals and systems, processors and controllers, C language, and Assembly language.

Comparing IIT Kharagpur with NIT Rourkela is a bit illogical considering the fact that IIT Kharagpur is among the top 5 engineering colleges in the country. Yes, NIT Rourkela CSE is good in terms of infrastructure and placements but it is yet to match the level of top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal and MNNIT Allahabad
IIT KGP is a brand in itself and is the other institute of all IITs. you shouldn't worry even if you are getting one of the least preferred branches here. This is because by working extra hard in the first year, you can easily upgrade your branch to a better one. Even if you fail to do so let me tell you that the coding culture here is very strong and even non-CS students can be seen coding.
Ultimately, I would suggest choosing IIT KGP mainly because of its high ranking, better crowd quality, IIT tag, and extensive alumni base.

There are many reasons why I will suggest you to go for IIT Kharagpur for applied geology and exploration geophysics. Some of these reasons include,
- Being an older IIT, IIT KGP has a much broader alumni base than Roorkee which in turn proves to be useful for higher education.
- In case you lose interest in Core geology you are always open to sitting for non-core placements which are in abundance at IIT KGP because of the alumni network.
- The curriculum at IIT KGP is way better than Roorkee in the sense that it is rigorous and much more industry relevant than Roorkee.
- IIT KGP has good administrative support and one can get funded for conferences.
- Being an MSc course, you can avail INSPIRE Scholarship given that you have a good GPA.

How are hostel rooms allotted at IIT Kharagpur?
IIT Kharapur has around 18-20 hostels. There are 2 main girl hostels that will be allotted to you way before you reach IIT KGP for admission.
Once you reach, that particular hostel will go through your documents and a lot of room. The rooms are usually double occupancy so you can ask for sharing the room with a specific friend also. You are also allowed to change your rooms after 15-20 days provided that you inform the hostel authority of the same and get registered under the new room.
Can any one enlighten me regarding the MS(by research) program at IIT Kharagpur?
While many confuse MTech and MS as similar, both programs have extremely different perspectives. Hence their worth and demand cannot be rightly compared.
The two major points of difference are that
- MTech has a fixed duration of 2 years whereas MS has no fixed duration and is completed whenever your professor decides.

If I leave my biases towards Delhi as a city aside. I would choose CSE at IIT KGP over MNC at IITD.

- Highest Package for CSE at IIT Kharagpur 2024 is 2.68 CPA offered by Amazon.
- Median salary at IIT Kharagpur CSE is 24 LPA.
- Median salary at IIT Delhi MNC is 20 LPA.
- MNC is one of the toughest branches in engineering while CSE requires comparatively less effort.
- More companies Come to campus for CSE placements like HFCL, Microsoft and KPMG.
- CSE offers more opportunities to several fields like AI/ML, data science, etc.
