Should I choose mechanical or civil engineering?

SA
Saransh Agarwal Posted On : February 22nd, 2022
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Cars and Automobiles, Sikkim Manipal University (2016)

Mechanical and Civil Engineering are core branches of engineering and both offer good future prospects. You should choose one according to your interest.

  • Both Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering require good knowledge of Applied and Material Physics. If you are interested in Physics, you should consider other branches of engineering.
  • Even though the base of these branches is Physics, the syllabus differs widely. So you should take a look at the syllabus for both branches before choosing one.
  • Talk to the people who are currently working in these domains and get to know what exactly they are doing. This can help you a lot to select the right course for you.
  • It will be better if you take a look at the M.Tech syllabuses for both branches as well. This will clear your vision in case you want to pursue higher studies in the future.
  • You will get decent job opportunities from either of these branches. There are govt sector jobs as well as the private sector.

So, factor in all these points and see what interests you more.

Which coaching institute is best for CE, IES in Delhi, IES Masters, or Made Easy?

RR
Roshni Roy Posted On : February 25th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) (2018)

Both coaching institutes have a decent performance in coaching. Though they have produced remarkable rankings in the past years. Both are famous for their decent results and the facilities it has been providing to its students for many years.

IES Masters

  • IES Masters has been producing remarkable results since its inception. It has both full-time classes for candidates and also weekend classes for working professionals.
  • The fee structure of regular classroom programs (ESE+GATE+PSU) for civil, mechanical, electrical, and electronics branches are Rs. 91,500.

The admissions are done on a regular basis and the students are also provided with login credentials for classroom tests, resource materials that are available on their website.

The faculty are also qualified and experienced to provide the best knowledge to its students.

Made Easy Coaching Institute

  • Made Easy was founded in 2001 and since then it has emerged as a successful coaching institute by producing remarkable results throughout the years. Its vision is to prepare every candidate with proper knowledge from the base level and make them competition-ready.
  • The fee structure of a regular classroom program (ESE+GATE) is Rs 79,000 including GST and the cost of books is Rs 12,500.

It provides quality education to its students as it has very experienced and talented teachers so that they can learn everything from the base level. A doubt-solving session is also organized by the teachers to clear out the doubts and understand the concepts better.

Some points about the two centers -

IES Masters

Made Easy

Technical Subjects are taught

Organized structure

Lesser number of students

A large number of students

Civil Engineering study material is good

More scholarships and discounts are provided

Non-Technical Material is not appropriate, sometimes copied

Non-Technical Study material is good

Study centre only in Delhi

Study centers are in all major cities, students can choose as per their convenience.

Ultimately, everything depends upon you and how much effort you put into preparing yourself. These coaching centers can only guide you and provide a proper direction. But at last, you have to give your all to make the most of it.

Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The average package offered to a civil engineer at IIT Bombay depends on a multitude of factors like a student's academic performance, relevant work experience, skills, and the current job market demand.

According to IIT Bombay Placements reports of 2023, the average package offered to civil engineering graduates from IIT Bombay stood at INR 17.9 LPA. However, this is only an estimate and does not rightly portray the current job market scenario. The actual package offered to Civil Engineering students might be higher or lower than this average.

Which is the best coaching Centre for IES (civil engineering) in India?

IA
Iqbal Ahmed Posted On : February 17th, 2021
Civil Engineering at IBS Hyderabad,2020

One of my cousins attended ACE Academy for IES coaching. He had a great academic experience. You should do your research about the institute before joining. Gather information about the faculty members, teaching methodology, quality of study material, accuracy of their test series, and their current ranking among the coaching institutes. My cousin shortlisted ACE Academy by judging these parameters.

Faculties:

  • The faculty at ACE are all mostly from IITs, some are even IEC qualified and most of them are ex-IES officers. ACE academy has been constantly producing top rankers in civil engineering and also other disciplines.
  • The faculties offer detailed notes and study material that are quite helpful for preparation. Also, they teach useful short-cuts and tricks which have proved to be extremely helpful in saving time during the examinations.

Practice Sets:

Practice sets are provided regularly to check the comprehension and analyzing capability of the student.

ACE coaching is certainly one of the top recommended coaching centers for IES. Even if you are unable to travel and attend the regular classes, there are options of getting notes via post. These notes are quite concise and very easy to understand.

Should I join NIT Warangal for CSE or a new IIT with civil engineering?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : August 18th, 2023

I always recommend people give preference to branches over the institute. This is because if you go for a less preferred branch, you will end up taking a software job anyways. So it’s better to choose a NIT instead of an IIT provided that you get CSE.

If you join the CSE branch at NIT Warangal you will develop software skills and succeed in the field rather than taking up the job just because you had no other options in Civil. The exposure offered to CSE in NIT Warangal is great and students can be seen participating in coding competitions that enhance their coding abilities tenfold. You end up becoming a skilled programmer and not an average programmer who had to choose the field unwillingly.

So, joining NI MT Warangal CSE is a better option than joining Civil Engineering at a new IIT unless you want to get government jobs like IES, Civil services.

What is the placement scene at DTU civil engineering?

SM
Sreejita Mukharjee Posted On : July 4th, 2023
B.Tech from Delhi Technological University (2021)

DTU Civil Engineering is one of the highly regarded civil departments in India with decent placements and opportunities. Here are a few points that will convince you further to join this branch

  • DTU Civil Engineering has a relatively easier syllabus in comparison to other branches. You can maintain a high CGPA and even make it into IIMs. You will also have better opportunities than students in non-core companies.
  • The light syllabus gives you enough time to prepare for IES/GATE examination and secure excellent government jobs.
  • Civil Engineering at DTU has decent placements and this year the average package offered was INR 8.845 LPA. If you have a decent CGPA and communication skills, you can easily secure a package in the range of 5-7 lakhs.
  • Among other future aspects of this program, you can also pursue MS from Stanford as there is very less competition compared to computer science.
  • Although your package will be inferior to CS students, a government job in civil engineering offers you a comfortable and contented life,

Please note that DTU has no branch change policy so choose Civil Engineering only if you are genuinely interested in it.

I left IIT Patna electrical and electronics for IIT Roorkee civil. Did I make the right decision?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : June 21st, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Yes, you certainly made the right decision by choosing IIT Roorkee over IIT Patna. The biggest reason for saying this is that IIT Roorkee is an older IIT, thus having better opportunities, alumni, and experienced faculty. The career opportunities and exposure rendered by an old IIT cannot be compared to that of a new IIT. Irrespective of the branch you choose, old IITs will help you develop as a person.

Additionally, the IIT Roorkee Civil Engineering branch is considered one of the best Civil branches in India.

Many students prefer average branches like Mechanical and Civil at old IITs to top branches like CSE and EEE at new IITs. So go for IIT Roorkee without any second thoughts.

Should I choose civil engineering or electrical engineering at Thapar University? I have to choose one and enter in university counselling in 2-3 days.

AM
Agnish Mukherjee Posted On : August 8th, 2023
BE from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

A number of central government PSUs and other government firms hire Electrical Engineers. Some of these government institutions include- ISRO, DRDL, BHEL, PGCL etc. Therefore, for government jobs both Civil and Electrical Engineering from Thapar University are a good option.

However, for private sector jobs, Electrical Engineering from Thapar University is a better option. Even for research opportunities, Electrical is a better option than Civil Engineering. In areas like wireless power transmission, solar efficiency improvement, etc. a breakthrough will fetch you a lot of patents.

Go for Civil if you are genuinely interested in this branch. You can also go for research in this field. But for Civil, the importance of R&D in the Indian market is quite low. Internships will be difficult for you to get in this branch and switching to software is not easy. The Civil coursework will not challenge you and you might develop laziness. However, as a Civil Engineer, if you have a few contacts and can establish your own firm, you will make good money.

As far as streams are concerned, Electrical is a better option than Civil. However, I would suggest you talk to Thapar University alums to figure out which branch gets more placement offers at Thapar. You should find out which branch has a better faculty and placement offers before making a choice.

Which is better, IITD civil or IIT Dhanbad for CS?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : October 11th, 2023

Since you haven’t mentioned the branch you are interested in, I will assume you have no particular preference. Now, the primary factor to consider is if you value the brand of the college or the branch of your choice. Consider the following points

  • You can go for a less preferred branch at the top 5 IITs and then work hard for branch change. But this would be risky as branch change is very difficult.
  • If your target is to get placed with excellent packages, then choose the CSE branch, it has the best job opportunities.
  • You can also choose to work for noncore placements at the top 5 IITs. However, this will be very time-consuming as you have to manage both your noncore branch and CSE.

The best option would be to choose IIT Dhanbad CSE. It’s true that it won’t offer the opportunities and exposure that the top 5 IITs would but for me branch is more important than the brand name of the college. So, choose according to your preferences.
