MBA in India: Which is better, TAPMI or KJ somaiya? Please judge solely on basis of package and placements
krunalI don’t think judging a college solely on the basis of placements is justified. Yet I have tabulated the placement statistics below to give an overall comparison.

Location: Location-wise K J Somaya has an upper hand as it is in Mumbai, the financial hub of India. TAPMI is situated in Manipal, The student hub.
Campus: TAPMI has a much better and more beautiful campus and infrastructure than KJ Somaiya.
Accreditation: TAPMI has an upper hand as it has coveted AACSB accreditation and is among the first institutes in India to get so.
So make a choice not just on the basis of placements but also consider other important factors.
How good is operations management at TAPMI?
T.A. Pai Management Institute or TAPMI consistently is ranked among the top 1% of B-Schools in India. The Operation Management program offered by TAPMI is quite good. The program covers a wide range of courses some of which are not even taught in well-known IIMs. The course work includes quizzes, live projects, simulations, paper-based exams, etc. The faculties at the institute are excellent.
The placement cell of TAPMI conducts pre-placement talks, seminars, industry visits, etc. to help the students with the placement process. The institute has a 100% placement rate for all specializations. Around 12 to 15 companies visit for Ops roles each year. Companies like Amazon, Flipkart offer Operation profiles with high packages. According to the placement statistics of 2019, the average package offered at the institute was around 11.54 LPA.
What is the admission process in TAPMI for MBA?
TAPMI accepts CAT/NMAT/CMAT/XAT scores.Cut off respectively are 85,80, 95 and 80 percentiles. After clearing the cutoffs they shortlist on the basis of academic profile including 10th, 12th and graduation scores and work experience with extra curricular activities.
After the shortlisting, TAPMI conducts WAP, GD, and PI rounds.
Why should one do MBA from TAPMI?
TAPMI is a great option to do MBA as it provides a good environment and decent exposers. Following are some points why you should do an MBA from TAPMI.
- Faculty- TAPMI has a great faculty base. The staff here are experienced and have a lot of knowledge in the particular field.
- Placement- When it comes to placement, it has maintained the 100% placement mark for more than 15 years. You will definitely get placement opportunities. But, where you get placed totally depends on you. The average and highest package is 11 LPA and 25 LPA respectively.
- Student Committees- There are many committees to choose from. But don’t worry if you don’t get into any. It will not affect your placements.
- Life at Manipal- You will have the best experience outside the studies in Manipal. It has many places where you can hang out with friends like eateries, bars, pubs, sports complexes, etc. Life at Manipal is great.
- Rules and regulations- Rules are very strict and any type of violation of rules can lead to suspension or penalty depending upon the intensity of violation. 100% attendance is mandatory here. If you are living in a hostel, there is no chance to go home for your cousin's wedding, or nephew’s baptism ceremony.
In addition to all these points, I would like to say that although it is a great place for study, your attitude towards things matters a lot. Overall you will end up with a lot of memories, and good friends.
What are the things to prepare for TAPMI post-selection?
Once you get your selection get in touch with the seniors to get an overall idea about the college and its curriculum.
Prerequisites based on both academic and non-academic fronts should be clear.
Brush up your clarity on subjects such as mathematics, and logic, and should have enough patience to remain concentrated for analyzing case studies that will be taught and discussed in the class.
Health issues if any should be taken care of prior to reaching the campus.
Try to carve out your career planning so that you are not perplexed once the class starts.
Among TAPMI, KJSOM and IMI Delhi (HRM/BKFS) which is the best to join?
Various magazines have ranked IMI Delhi > TAPMI > KJSOM. However, the decision of which college to join ultimately depends on what you expect from your degree.
When considering joining IMI Delhi, key points to consider are:
- Faculty and curriculum: IMI is known for its faculty and the rigorous curriculum that is followed. As a student, you will get good exposure to subjects related to various domains, and in terms of electives, you will have a good range of options to choose from.
- Location: IMI Delhi is located in the NCR region, which provides many advantages in terms of exposure and opportunities to work on live projects.

Which is a better choice, SIOM Nashik or TAPMI?
My brother was in a similar pickle a few years back. He is from a Mechanical Engineering background and wanted to opt for Operations. After talking to his mentor and seniors at different management institutes as well as analyzing the reviews online he decided to go for TAPMI. Here are some of the reasons why he chose TAPMI.
- Reputed coaching institutes like TIME ranks TAPMI ahead of SIOM.
- If we look for the factors that make for a good management institute, i.e. location, faculty, diversity, infrastructure then TAPMI is obviously the better alternative.
- Good placement is not the only yardstick of a good management school. A good management school should give you a comprehensive and holistic educational experience which TAPMI does. Although SIOM evening classes will be better if you are a working professional.

How good is PGDM with Oprations at IMT Ghaziabad or TAPMI?
My friends passed out from IMT Ghaziabad and said that your specialization does not really matter. What matters is the institute. She was in a dilemma about choosing IMT and TAPMI and later went for IMT Ghaziabad and is very proud of her decision. She thinks it has many advantages over TAPMI like
- IMT Ghaziabad has a better reputation and brand name than TAPMI
- Most recruiters consider IMT a top B School of the country and give it preference to TAPMI
- IMT does not instill unnecessary rigor and has a calm relaxed environment. It’s up to you to grab the necessary opportunities and climb the ladder
- The campus life is usually student driven so it helps in overall personality development
- The Operations faculty at IMT Ghaziabad is a notch above TAPMI
All these points clearly show that IMT Ghaziabad is better than TAPMI.
Which one is preferred for the electronics branch, Thapar University or Manipal main campus?
Thapar University was once a very prestigious and highly regarded institute. But now it has lost its charm and its quality of education is very low now. The main reason for the same is an increase in the intake of average students just for the sake of earning money. Dont believe the NIRF rankings as they are manipulated and misleading.
One of my friends recently chose Manipal University because the quality of the crowd is much better than Thapar University. The quality of the crowd is deteriorating because of increasing cutoffs and the huge reservation for Punjab residents. Manipal University cutoffs on the other hand are decreasing so it's able to maintain the quality of the crowd better.
So, Manipal Unversity is a preferable choice for the electronics branch.
