How is NIT Calicut for a B.Tech in material science?

NM
Nandini Mishra Posted On : August 26th, 2021
National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

B.Tech in material science in NIT CALICUT is a slightly underrated course as it is newly introduced. NIT Calicut also has an M.Tech course for material science.

The material science branch in NIT Calicut is a very promising branch despite being an underrated and newly introduced branch and has become an important part of NIT Calicut. This branch also has a dedicated department for nanotechnology. Recently they have made their college proud by preparing and distributing hand sanitizer in the entire campus and also in local sections of society to fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The placements of this department are not as great as in the computer science department as it is a newly introduced branch.

This is a research-oriented branch with a strong alumni network. Material Science is definitely a promising field and offers a lot of opportunities in higher studies. If you love nanoscience then you should go for this course.

Which is better, BITS Goa or NIT Calicut?

SD

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2018)

This question sparks a debate among people. You might find some say that even biotechnology at NIT C is better than CSE at BITS Goa; all these are baseless claims. It is strongly suggested to look at the placement statistics before reaching a conclusion.

BITS Goa is way better than NIT Calicut. Forget biotechnology, even CSE at BITS Goa is better than CSE at NIT C.

At NIT C, if you go for biotechnology, you will be placed through mass recruitment in companies like TCS, with a maximum salary of 3 lakhs. These companies have no connection with biotechnology. However, CSE at BITS, Goa can get you placed even at Google. This is definitely not a baseless claim, pre-placement offers and the number of GSOC selections are enough evidence for the same.

Comparing BITS Pilani and IIIT Hyderabad, BITS Pilani ≥ IIIT Hyderabad. The greater than symbol is only because of how old the institutes are. So finally this goes like BITS Goa ≥ IIIT Delhi ≥ BITS Hyderabad.

Is NIT Calicut good in the ranking?

HS
Harshita Sharma Posted On : April 8th, 2021
M.Tech Machine Design, National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2022)

According to NIRF 2020 Engineering ranking, NIT Calicut is ranked at 23rd position. It is a good sign since in 2017 and 2018 it was ranked at 44th and 50th position, respectively.

But, the decline in ranking that it had to go through was because of the administration. Let us look at this one by one:

  • The infrastructure is not good. Hostels are not up to the mark and there are no separate hostels for PG students. The mega hostels have been under construction for so many years. Half of the college campus is forest.
  • Very few permanent faculties. Most of the faculties are visiting faculty. Even though faculties keep on retiring, no new permanent appointments are made.
  • The placement records are very bad. Core branches don’t even get placed. You can find placement only in the department of CSE, EEE, and ECE.

Hopefully, all this has changed for the better and so has the ranking in 2020. But, it was because of poor administration that the ranking saw a downfall in the past. On the contrary, cut-offs for JEE and GATE have only increased.

How are the hostels like at NIT Calicut? Is there a single occupancy for M.Tech students?

RS
Rachita Sinha Posted On : September 5th, 2022
B.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut

NIT Calicut offers decent hostel accommodations. The rooms are double or triple sharing. The institute offers basic amenities such as beds, cupboards, and tables. Hostel rooms have adequate lighting and ventilation. Bathrooms are shared by several rooms. Rooms and washrooms are cleaned regularly. The mess facilities are good. They offer a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

M.Tech students aren’t offered single occupancy rooms, by NIT Calicut.

Is environmental geotechnology (civil) branch for M.Tech at NIT Calicut good enough?

JS
Jugal Sabharwal Posted On : August 20th, 2021
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut (2020)

The M.Tech program of Environmental Geotechnology at NIT Calicut is an interdisciplinary branch.

In the first semester, you will be taught about Geotechnological Engineering and in the second semester, you will learn about subjects that are in Environmental Engineering such as Groundwater Hydrology.

All in all, this course is more towards the Geotechnical side than the Environmental side. You also have to undertake projects. Usually, most people opt for Geotechnical projects.

Talking about the prospects of the future, L&T has been the only recruiters for some years now they recruited very few students pursuing postgraduate.

If you want to teach this course in the future, then pursuing it will be a good idea. It is definitely a good course but not the best. Join if you are interested in the course and not for the NIT tag.

How much should I score in JEE Mains inorder to get ECE in NIT Calicut?

SS
Sneha Sahu Posted On : August 20th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) (2019)

The aspiring candidate should not think about this right now. As we all know, the cutoff trends change every year. If the candidate wants an approximate idea, they need to add +15 marks to the previous year’s cutoff marks. The cutoff marks differ for home and other state students.

Here is the NIT Calicut JEE Main 2020 cutoff.

Categories All India (Male) All India (Female)
General 6864 8539
OBC 2285 3313
EWC 1152 1365
SC 1509 1961
ST 467 906

It is time to stop thinking about the cutoffs and minimum marks and focus on the preparation. One should always prepare for greater marks than the required cutoff.

How much should an OBC student score in the JEE Mains to get a seat in NIT Trichy?

SG
Shubham Gupta Posted On : August 31st, 2021
B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu (2020)

It depends on the course you're interested in and if you're in the home state category or not. If you are from your native state, you should have a minimum of 130 points; if not, add 20 to 30 points more.

Recent cut-off stats of NIT Trichy for popular courses is given below.

Branch  General rank OBC rank
ECE 847- 3022 425 - 1011
Chemical engineering 3225-12056 1972 – 4207
Computer science engineering 163 - 781 108 - 242
Mechanical engineering 2468 - 6,591 1194 - 2,139
Electrical & Electronics Engineering 954 - 5,381 932- 1,717
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering 12765 - 20,809 4407 - 6,908

Anywhere between 200 and 300 will get you a good nit with the branch you're after. So 200 should suffice.

How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Calicut in terms of faculty, facilities and placements?

CB
Charulata Bose Posted On : August 25th, 2021

It is really exciting that people are interested in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. There are many other topics in chemical engineering that you will start loving when you start reading them.

If you are genuinely interested in the subject then it will completely be your effort in approaching the professors to learn and to study more.

There are not many professors in the department. Most of them are Ad-hoc teachers who will be teaching the subject. If you wish to go for higher studies, it will be your effort in asking the faculty to help you out.

Category NIT Calicut
Total Fee 5.42 lakhs
Companies Visited Oracle, Hindustan Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, Cipla, etc.
Highest Package 49.75 LPA
Average Package 12-15 LPA

If you talk about the placement scenario, there are only a few core companies that visit the campus along with a lot of non-core companies. Overall, college life is good in the department of chemical engineering.

Why are the placements for B.Tech Civil Engineering so low in NIT Calicut?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

The following are some possible reasons why the placements for B.Tech Civil Engineering may be relatively low compared to other branches at NIT Calicut.

  1. Limited job opportunities: Civil engineering is a field that relies heavily on the government and public sector for job opportunities. Therefore, if there are fewer job openings in the public sector, it may result in lower placements for civil engineering students.
  2. Specialization: Civil engineering is a vast field with many specializations. It's possible that the students specializing in certain areas within civil engineering, such as construction management or structural engineering, have better job prospects than those in other areas.
  3. Regional demand: The demand for civil engineers can vary depending on the region. It's possible that the job market for civil engineering in the region where NIT Calicut is located is not as strong as in other regions.
  4. Economic conditions: The economic conditions of the country can also affect the job market for civil engineers. During an economic downturn, there may be a decrease in construction activity and infrastructure projects, which can lead to lower job opportunities for civil engineering graduates.

It's important to note that these are just possible reasons and may not necessarily be the only factors affecting the placement statistics of B.Tech Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut.
