The increase in the data-driven roles in the industry led to the launching of MBA in Data Science and Analytics courses at KJ Somaiya. My friend being a data freak eagerly pursued this course and here are some crisp details regarding the same.
Objective: The major objective of this course is to build a strong foundation of technical knowledge that will lead to the easy practical application of these concepts.
Subjects taught: The first year covers the most basic subjects to make it easy for the students that lack an IT background, while the second year subjects focus on future requirements of data analytics in these business domains.
First-year subjects:
Second year subjects:
Pedagogy: The pedagogy here includes
Apart from these, conferences and guest lectures from industry experts add to the quality of education here.
Student-driven committee: One of the significant features of KJ Somaiya is its student-driven committee, “Quantinuum- The Quants and Analytics Committee". It aims at discussing the latest events in the field of Data Analytics and Quantitative Methodologies and learning the technical skills required to thrive in the industry.
Career opportunities: The MBA in Data Science and Analytics will open multiple career roles to you such as
All these roles are in high demand in this data-driven society.
Comparing the 2 B Schools that are KJ Somaiya and NIRMA, I would say both are equal in terms of placements, opportunities and exposure. The only factor you need to consider here is location. NIRMA is a good choice if your hometown is nearby. But if you want to enjoy your college life, explore and make memories, KJ Somaiya is the best. Located in Vidyavihar, a student-dominated area in Mumbai, it has an amazing campus with top-notch facilities.

The table below draws a clear comparison between both the B Schools.

So from the table, we can infer that placement-wise both colleges are almost the same. The difference lies in their location and the type of college life they offer.
IMI Delhi accepts only CAT/GMAT scores. The expected XAT cutoff for the rest of colleges are as follows:
B-School | Expected XAT cutoff |
IMI Kolkata | 60 |
Fore Delhi | 86.5 |
KJ Somaiya | 70-73 |
TAPMI | 85 |
Placement-wise both the colleges give each other tough competition. Some basic differences between the two are
Specialization: SDA Bocconi has an upper hand in marketing roles whereas KJ Somaiya has the upper hand in finance roles.
Batch-size: KJ Somaiya has a higher batch-size than SDA Bocconi. Therefore the student-teacher ratio is also higher. This affects the classroom learning experience.
Fees: SDA Bocconi has higher fees( INR 18,60,000) than that of KJ Somaiya (INR 9.59 Lakhs (1st Year Fees).
So it’s up to you to decide if you are willing to pay a high fee and get the tag of a well renowned brand in Europe or pay less and get into an above average B School of India. Academic-wise the result from both the colleges will be more or less the same.
Let’s consider the following factors to draw a comparison between TAPMI, BIM Trichy, and KJ Somaiya.
Infrastructure: TAPMI has the most beautiful campus among three having a bigger library, Computer center, FINLAB from Bloomberg. You also get to share facilities from MIT and KMC like
BIM and KJ Somaiya also have a good campus but are not at par with the campus of TAPMI.
Recognition: TAMPI enjoys better recognition of the two owing to its AACSB accreditation.

Although all the courses offered at KJ Somaiya are equally good, its Marketing discipline is the most coveted one. Also there is no partiality during placement of students of various disciplines. Every student is allowed to sit for PPT and then for final interviews after selection.KJ Somaiya conducts a transparent and unbiased placement drive. Students from Finance, Marketing, Operations and HR get segregated during the initial selection process.
A number of companies visit the campus for placements. The placement committee makes sure that every year new companies also line up in addition to the many companies that visit every year. So I don’t think placements should be a concern for anyone getting into KJ Somaiya.
The PGDM in Retail Management at KJ Somaiya is a relatively new course and not much can be said about its worth. But I have a friend who is currently pursuing RM at KJ Somaiya. According to him, it’s a good choice for someone with interest in this field to pursue this course because
All this makes the course worth trying.
To make a choice between the two first you need to be sure if you are choosing between colleges or choosing between courses. I will give you a brief description of both the colleges.
KJ Somaiya
KJ Somaiya has better ranking than Welingkar and is more recognised in the corporate world. Also its flagship course Communications Marketing has wider scope in comparison to E-Business.
Welingkar Bangalore
It is situated in the IT hub of the country and has a great campus. Its flagship course of E-Business is like any other MBA with an additional inclusion of IT related subjects. These subjects aim at providing benefit to people with technical and non technical background both.
So the final choice is yours to make based on your interests.
