Your question has a lot of variables to consider. This answer is unbiased as it can be. You should take a job after B.Tech. if you don’t have a strong resume. MBA is a professional course and welcomes experienced students who are well versed in academic performance, extra-curricular, and leadership/management experience.
If you lack in these areas my suggestion would be to upgrade your CV with skills and experience and give CAT another shot.
Keep in mind that your salary does not matter. Your achievements, crisis management and leadership skills you acquire while at work are more important. So if you are eyeing a high-end consulting job, take another go at CAT after gaining some more experience.
Some people tend to lose the motivation to prepare for CAT over the years. They can join IIM Kozhikode even as freshers.
The admission criteria at all the IIMs changes every year. One year you may get admission with relatively low scores but the next year you might now get in even with a high score.
It all depends on the panel of judges and your luck. So my recommendation is that you should not depend too much on your 10 and 12 marks.
Go for the CAT and score 99 percentile. Chances are you will get admission even with low 10 and 12 marks. But without CAT you need better marks in 10 and 12 to make it into any IIMs.
Yes, IIM Kozhikode has its own rigorous student exchange program. The students are sent in the second term of the second year while the foreign students come in the 1st or 2nd term.
Application Process-
This program is based on CGPA. The list of universities and the number of seats available is displayed. The student with the highest CGPA gets to choose his university first and this goes down till the number of available seats is zero.
EPGCOM is one of the best certification courses offered by IIM Kozhikode.
If you’ve worked for a while in the operations domain, and wish to climb the ladder in your company, this is an ideal course for you. It is meant for professionals with some amount of work experience.
It demands a fundamental understanding of operations, and is not meant for freshers or professionals with zero experience in this domain. Moreover, the course does not offer any placement assistance. The faculty and teaching methodology for EPGCOM is top notch, which is obvious as IIM Kozhikode is a renowned management college.
Overall, the course is good, but only for professionals with experience in the operations domain.
IIM Kozhikode does not offer any specialization degree. It offers a General Management or PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management). This is somewhat equivalent to an MBA. It doesn’t offer specific PGDM in Operations, Finance, HR, etc.
A variety of electives are offered in the second year. You may choose these on the basis of your interests and the career you wish to pursue.
The area offers a list of elective courses in which the students choose to have a career in the human resource field or develop their people management competency. Some elective courses are as follows:
Legal Aspects of HRM
Strategic HRM
Some Recent OB Inputs for Enhancing Employee Performance and Humanistic Orientation in Workplace
Compensation and Rewards Management
Performance Management
Leadership: Applied, Conceptual and Evolving
Discovering Self
Negotiations & Conflicts Resolution
Management Consulting: Profession and Practice
Managing Creativity
Organization Change and Development
Recruitment & Selection
Honestly, IIM Kozhikode is not a good option for HR. IIM Ranchi or SCMHRD are better options for the same.
Yes you will get a call for sure from IIM Kozhikode.
With a profile comparable to yours and an OBC/NCL background, the required percentile will be somewhere near 98+. So, I believe you will receive your call unless they reject you due to your previous academic performance.
Definitely, both the B-Schools are great but IIMK should be your first choice. Unless we are discussing Operation then I would advise you to opt for SJMSOM.
You will have trouble with placements due to your average academics as most of your peers will have better academic records. You will always get opportunities to make your profile better. You can improve your profile by winning competitions, holding significant PORs, and getting an excellent grade in your MBA programme.
Even if you don’t get your desired placement, you can excel in the job and leverage your performance in the corporate world along with the IIM alumni network on your side. That way you will be able to fetch better opportunities a few years later.
Here are the recent placement highlights for the institutes.
Parameters | IIM Kozhikode | SJMSOM |
Average CTC | 22.5 LPA | 21 LPA |
Highest CTC | 46 LPA | 32 LPA |
Major recruiters | Asian Paints, Amazon, Brain & Co. | JCB, Infosys, Flipkart |
IIM Kozhikode definitely offers certain advantages which makes it a superior choice.
My answer is from the perspective of an FPM aspirant. To draw a fair comparison I have considered the following parameters
Hostel:
The hostel facility at IIM Kozhikode is not very good. The first-year students have no married accommodation while the second or third-year students have very limited married accommodation. Sometimes the FPM students are adjusted with PGP students which is very disturbing.
IIM Lucknow has 2 spectate buildings for FPM students. Also, married accommodations are available from the 1 st year itself.
Food:
There is no active mess committee to pay heed to the complaints regarding substandard food. The menu is usually North Indian and is rarely followed properly. Limited South Indian food is available. Options outside the mess are also limited and not as per the taste of many.
IIM Lucknow has an active mess committee that takes care of the food and cleanliness of the mess. The menu has a variety of options and is changed every month to break the monotony. Famous for its food, there are many options to eat outside in Lucknow.
Academics:
The academics are very rigorous at IIM Kozhikode with tight schedules and deadlines. For FPM students, the minimum passing criteria are B- (2.67/4.33) which is 62% passing criteria. Whereas the minimum criteria to award a Ph.D. degree is at least one publication in “B” (ABDC) category journals.
IIM Lucknow has a relatively less rigorous curriculum than Kozhikode. The minimum passing criteria are 50%. Whereas the minimum criteria to award a Ph.D. degree is at least one publication in “C” (ABDC) category journals.
Apart from these major differences, the infrastructure, faculty, and college life are almost the same. So you can make a good choice now.
If the job opportunity offered at the end of an Executive MBA from IIM Kozhikode is less than what you are already earning, it’s not logical to invest 20 Lakhs and gain nothing in return. However, irrespective of your current package, an Executive MBA is a unique qualification and will help you for further growth.
There are many institutes that offer Executive MBA at lesser fees than IIMs. Listed below are some of the top institutes offering Executive MBA courses in the country along with the fees charged by them
Symbiosis Center for Management and HRD |
INR 2,10,000 |
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management |
INR 2,60,000 |
Amity University |
INR 6,20,000 |
Indian Institute of Business Management and Studies |
INR 40,800 |
FMS |
INR 95,000 |
Delhi Technological University |
INR 2,30,000 |
A few institutes even offer triple accredited Executive MBA which is the most valued. Ultimately, you should not focus on the institute but on what it offers.
