What should I take, electrical engineering at IIT Delhi or CSE at BITS Pilani?

DS
Dipti Sinha Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2022)

Both IIT Delhi and BITS Pilani are esteemed institutions with dynamic programs in electrical engineering and computer science, respectively. However, the decision of which program to choose depends on your personal interests and career goals. But one can consider the following points while make the decision

  • Placements: The placement scenario is quite similar in both the institutes' byte CSE being the most in-demand branch sought better placements with the average package this year being, INR 30.37 LPA. Additionally, you can get coding jobs more easily as a CS student than EE.
  • Brand: This is where your IIT tag comes into play. It has a better brand value than BITS thus making it easier to apply abroad for higher education.
  • Education: Both the quality of education and rigor is higher at IIT Delhi than BITS.
  • Workload: BITS Pilani has less academic workload making it possible to seek much more than studies. The laid-back ambiance gives you opportunities to explore your interests apart from academics.
  • Fees: BITS Pilani has much higher fees around INR 4.84 lakh- INR 19.94 lakh for the CS program whereas IIT Delhi has lower fees around INR 8.00 Lakh.
  • Location: IIT Delhi enjoys the locational advantage of being surrounded with markets, multiplexes, and malls which is not possible due to the remote location of BITS Pilani.

BITS is somewhere near the level of IIT Delhi but its overall campus and opportunities are yet to reach its level.

Which is better, BITS Pilani or CBIT?

PK
Prakhar Kumar Posted On : July 29th, 2021
M.Tech Computer Science & Data Analytics, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

BITS Pilani is definitely the better college as compared to CBIT. I do not have much idea about CBIT. BITS has a league of its own.

Here are some key points about BITS:

  • It has a really good academic culture and is one of the best academic institutions after IITs for engineering degrees.
  • The college is much better than many Indian engineering colleges when it comes to infrastructure, placements, brand as well as campus life.
  • BITS Pilani focuses on open learning as well as dual specialization.
  • You will experience quality teaching and have a really good global alumni base.

You can compare other IITs like IITB, IITM, IITK for better or for the worse. But, keep in mind that this does not mean that other top governments or private colleges are not equally good or even comparable to BITS. It all boils down to the pedigree, which is the only thing that matters.

A lot of colleges across the country are making huge strides in efforts to tackle leading colleges within the next 8 to 10 years. It all depends upon how strategically the college invests and commits to doing better. From what little knowledge we have about CBIT, it really does not compare much in this aspect.

Which is better, IIT Delhi (chemical) or BITS Pilani (CSE)?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Irrespective of whichever Institute you go for, CSE is the most demanded branch today and has the best pay scale and job prospects. So, if it’s placements you are after, then BITS Pilani CSE is the right choice for you.

However, if you want to become an entrepreneur then Delhi being the capital is the absolute best place for you. Choosing IIT Delhi on the pretext of learning coding in the last year is a wrong mindset and at the end of the day, you will find yourself with little exposure and knowledge than those who learned coding for 4 years.

Make a well-informed decision considering the pros and cons of both institutes and courses.

Which is better Jadavpur University or BITS Pilani? Why?

SK
Shivani Khanna, Posted On : November 8th, 2021

You should go for BITS Pilani, Jadavpur University is also a good choice but it entirely depends on your preference of environment and culture.

Following are some facts about BITS Pilani and why it will be a good choice.

  • There is no form of reservation based on state or caste, or donation admissions. Admissions are completely merit-based.
  • Attendance is not strict (except in labs).
  • It has a diverse student crowd.
  • The university offers 2 internships - a 2-months internship during the 2nd year and a 6-months internship in the 4th year.
  • Top students even get PPOs, recommendation letters for higher studies, etc.
  • Labs are great and are well equipped with modern machinery.
  • Mess food is decent compared to others. New hostels are great and have Wi-Fi. Therefore, accommodations are decent.
  • Students are also encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities for holistic development.

BITS Pilani has higher fees, the quality of education they provide is remarkable. As for fees, they provide a scholarship program called MCN, which is fairly easy to receive, and requires a family income of below 8 lakh. They also have a merit scholarship for this with an extremely good CGPA (above 9.5).

What is taught in the first semester in BITS Pilani? What textbooks are used?

YJ
Yash Jadav Posted On : July 17th, 2021
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani – Pilani Campus

The first-year syllabus of every engineering college generally consists of basic science subjects, along with some subjects common to all departments of engineering. Here are the subjects taught in BITS Pilani during the first and second semesters of engineering.

First Semester:

  • MEOW stands for Mechanics Oscillations and Waves. The “waves” part of the subject is easier and scoring. If you like Mechanics, you will find it easy.
  • General Chemistry is also taught during the first semester. The quantum chemistry part is a bit difficult to understand, so most students just learn to solve problems in this.
  • General Biology consists of interesting lectures. The exams of this subject consist of conceptual questions and so, you should have your concepts cleared.
  • M1 is the first paper for mathematics, having series, sequences, and some parts of advanced calculus in it.
  • Engineering Graphics is a subject in which you will be taught the usage of AutoCAD. It is better for you to get used to AutoCAD 2014 before joining college because some find this difficult due to poor visualization skills.
  • The Labs in physics and biology are usually normal. You just need to be regular, work properly in labs, and be prepared for viva to get a decent grade in those lab papers.

Second Semester:

  • M2 is the second paper for engineering mathematics, having chapters in linear algebra and complex numbers. The part of linear algebra is very scoring.
  • The most important course in the second semester is computer programming, which has 4 units of credit.
  • Probability and Statistics is a very easy course, even easier in the midterm component. Attend all lectures till post the midterm. In those, new concepts are taught.
  • Thermodynamics is an interesting subject. You need to learn the use of tables, which is utterly important.
  • Electrical Science is a vast course. Usually, most students have a low average in this subject and so, try to do well in the tutorial tests.
  • Technical Report Writing is a small course. You will need to learn the format used in writing and write in brief.
  • The workshop is considered a mechanical laboratory. You need to choose between sections wisely as per interest and do well in the 3-unit shops.

These are the subjects taught in the first two semesters of engineering at BITS Pilani, along with a brief overview of each.

How is studying at the BITS Goa campus different from that in Pilani?

MS
Mamta Singhal Posted On : August 10th, 2021
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2021)

In terms of your degree, it will not mention the campus you studied at but that you got a degree from BITS Pilani. There is also no difference in the coursework or material.  But, when it comes to differences, here are some of the major ones:

  • In terms of discipline, the Goa campus is strict due to obvious reasons and Pilani is a little lenient that way. But that does not mean you will be restricted. It is the perfect balance of discipline and fun.
  • You will find that the grading is also quite tough in Goa as compared to Pilani. The faculty at Pilani are quite helpful but some could be tough on you.
  • You will find some cultural differences between the two campuses. There isn’t a stark contrast but small things that make a difference like the way students join a department, etc.
  • BITS Pilani has always topped Goa in terms of reputation. But, CSE at Goa is much better than Pilani. This is because students at Goa have won quite a few competitions and gotten better than Pilani. It also has more GSoC selections.
  • BITS Pilani is located quite isolated with extreme cold -2 degrees Celsius and extreme heat of 50 degrees Celsius. There is not much to do outside the campus. You can drive down to Delhi or Jaipur which are about 3 to 4 hours away. Goa is better located in that aspect. You can take a 40 min drive to the main city or even drive to Mumbai if you like.

If you think curriculum is what makes the difference between the two campuses, that is not the case. It is more about the day-to-day living at the college and other events.

Does bits pilani offer automobile engineering?

NK
Nitin Kunwar Posted On : July 17th, 2021
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

BITS Pilani doesn’t offer a specific automobile engineering course, but there are some similar courses offered by the institute in engineering.

  • BITS Pilani offers courses in Automotive Engineering and IC Engines, which are direct implementations of automobile engineering subjects.
  • There are some other subjects like Kinetic and Dynamics of Machines, Machine Design, etc in mechanical engineering, which is helpful if you are interested in the field of automobiles.
  • There are several technical teams in BITS Pilani for students interested in automotive engineering. A team, named Inspired Karters, works on formula one cars and participates in national and international events. You can also build some projects under a professor for strengthening their own resumes.

It is true that there are not many good engineering colleges for automobile engineering in India. BITS Pilani has provided a way out for such interested students in these subjects. Also, if you are interested in designing and application for vehicles, a master’s degree is mandatory.

What is BITS Pilani Any-learn system?

SS
Sarika Sharma Posted On : July 17th, 2021
Ph.D from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2016)

BITS Pilani is an excellent institute, providing life to students that are a lot different from other institutes, including premier engineering colleges like IITs and others in India.

  • Life at BITS Pilani is confined to activities inside the campus only. There are very few to almost nothing to do outside the campus of BITS Pilani. This is because BITS is situated in a very remote area. You will need to travel at least 200+ km to reach the nearest big cities like Delhi or Jaipur.
  • The education system of BITS will teach you to manage your study life and extra-curricular life as well as possible.

The first year is the most stressful year at BITS Pilani because you will be new to a system of learning after 10+2. During this year, you should start to participate in clubs and events. Which may help you find your passion.

Career Counselling: Has anyone regretted leaving iits for bits pilani?

SD
Shubham Dasgupta Posted On : July 22nd, 2021
Studied at IIEST Shibpur (2019)

No one has ever regretted leaving IITs for BITS Pilani as one must have a really good reason for this switch.

One of my friends studied at BITS, and here’s what he experienced.

  • First-year: You will get thoughts like why you are not in an IIT. But do not listen or trust anyone who comes up with a thought like that. People will keep on telling you that IITs would have been so much better, but do not believe them.
  • Second-year: You might consider giving JEE another shot. But while you focus on preparing for JEE, you will gradually miss your ongoing classes. Your attendance could be hampered.
  • Third-year: You would sulk about how you do not have any skills that would be required and consider getting into IIM-C, but then, the cut-off might not make you very happy.
  • Fourth-year: You would freak out looking at the IIT placement scenario. Do not worry, it is pretty normal. The feelings might intensify on the day-5 of your IIT placements.

However, by the time you reach the end of your fourth year, you would be absolutely drained to even consider or see how the off-campus jobs work, the IIM/MS admission scenario, and even the PPOs approaching.
