Do they have a single student per room in hostels at IIT Kanpur?
My knowledge is limited to the accommodation facilities of UG students at IIT Kanpur only. The first-year students are allotted the Hall of Residence 13. This 6-story building has double or triple-seater rooms and has been built recently and thus has the best facilities among other hostels of IIT Kanpur. Its location is an added feature.
But from the second year, you will have to leave these splendid hostels and move to other hostels like Hall of Residence 2,3, 5, or 12. Let’s talk about these halls individually to get a better insight into the accommodation facilities of IIT Kanpur students.
- Hall 1 and 9: Thisbisbysally for final year students as it has single occupancy rooms only.
- Hall 2: Students of this hostel are allotted double occupancy rooms and this hostel is known for its prime location.
- Hall 3: The design and facilities of this hall are very much similar to Hall 2
- Hall 5: This hostel has bigger and more spacious rooms in comparison to 2 and 3 and you are likely to get a single occupancy room in your 3 or 4 years.
- Hall 6: This is the girls' hostel which is infamous for its congested rooms and poor location.
- Hall 12: This hall has both single and double occupancy rooms and the one you will be allotted depends solely on your luck.
All in all, IIT Kanpur provides decent hostel facilities to its students so that students are comfortable and can give their all in academics.
What is better EE at IIT Kanpur or CSE at IIT Roorkee?
Both EE at IIT Kanpur and CSE at IIT Roorkee are well-recognized academic institutions in India. However, the choice between EE at IIT Kanpur and CSE at IIT Roorkee completely depends on your career goals and preferences.

What is the scope for doing an MTech in material science at the IIT in Kanpur?
The MTech in Material Science at IIT Kanpur is a multidisciplinary program that caters to students from diverse backgrounds. It especially is well known for its cutting-edge research work and thus attracts those who are interested in the same.
Scope: Foreign universities give more preference to interdisciplinary research than the core and thus this program is perfect for those planning to do Ph.D. from a foreign university. IIT Kanpur has collaborated with 9 foreign universities and specializes in interdisciplinary research.
Placements: Very few core companies visit the campus for placements with Applied Materials, and KLA Tencor to name a few. Apart from this, Finance analyst, Banking, Software engineering, Gate coaching, and Jee Coaching, also offer roles to students of this program.
Curriculum: The course is purely theoretical with less practical approach.
Research: In MSP, Research is conducted in battery materials and electrode materials widening the scope. Other areas of research include Supercapacitors, Nano Materials, LEDs, and Flexible electronics.
Overall, the course has great scope and is likely to improve in the near future.
My JEE rank is 600. Should I go for electrical at IIT Kanpur or CS at IIT Roorkee?
As per the latest stats, you will not be able to get admission in CSE at IIT Roorkee at this rank if you are from the general category. I think that you should choose EE at IIT Kanpur over CSE at IIT Roorkee because of the following reasons:-
- Taking EE in Kanpur is more advantageous than CSE in Roorkee due to higher placement percentages and more flexible academics, which helps to let you develop yourself more.
- IIT Kanpur has a better NIRF ranking of 4th compared to IIT Roorkee 5th.
- As of 2023, the average salary at IIT Kanpur EE branch is 26.27 LPA, while the average salary for IIT Roorkee's CSE branch is 27 LPA, so there is not much difference.

How is the Aerospace Engineering department at IIT Kanpur and what is the scope of the field in India?
Honestly, the infrastructure of the department does not do justice to the reality of the department. The faculty, peer group quality, and education offered are all top-notch. The students are keen to understand the concepts and make the most out of the program.
Pros
- The NWTF-National Wind Tunnel facility
- An airstrip with a hanger
- The student-faculty ratio is perfect owing to the small batch size enabling students to approach the professors easily for clearing their doubts.
- The professors are highly learned, one of them having received the Shanti Swarup award.
Cons
- The core companies give more preference to master/Ph.D. students over BTech students. This specialization requires experience and skills which is possible in the case of MTech students.
- Moreover, this field is still not developed in India and has less scope. It will take time for this field to grow fully and provide enough job opportunities.
Overall, this department has little scope in India, yet IIT Kanpur is one of the best institutes for those interested in this branch.
Does IIT Kanpur offer an M.Tech course in robotics or mechatronics?
Admissions to MTech programs are done on the basis of GATE. This program is offered by the Center for Robotics and Mechatronics at IIT Kanpur. Apart from IIT Kanpur, there are several other institutes offering courses in Robotics like

- Jadavpur University, Kolkata
- BITS Pilani
- Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Prasanthinilayam, Tamil Nadu- M.Tech
- PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore- Mechanical has Robotics as an elective subject.
Short courses in Robotics are taught at Orissa Engineering College and the Institute of Technical Education and Research.
Which of these is better in IIT Kanpur: BSC in Chemistry/Physics, Earth Science, Biological Science or Engineering?
It depends on what you are interested in and what career you want to pursue. My personal suggestion would be to make IIT Delhi your first preference.
First, if you are a civil services aspirant, get admission into IIT Delhi in any branch and prepare for UPSC through the various coaching institutes available.
If you are somehow not able to make it into IIT Delhi, then invest another year preparing for JEE and aim for a higher rank. Once you are able to make it into IIT Kanpur, again you need to work hard for one year to get a branch change into Civil. You will be competing with geniuses from CS and ME but keep yourself motivated. A CPI of 7+ will make it possible to get a branch change. Attend your classes regularly, complete your assignments on time and you are good to go.
Lastly, if you are unable to change your branch, go for pure sciences like Physics, Chemistry, BSBE, or Earth Science. Out of these Physics and chemistry have a heavy workload and it will be tough to cope with your batchmates. BSBE has pathetic placements. Another option is Earth Sciences which in my opinion is the best considering the light workload and job opportunities. The average CPI is lesser than other branches and most of its courses overlap with Civil Engineering. Basically, Earth Sciences is equivalent to Civil Engineering just without the Engineering element.
How are the electrical engineering placements at IIT Kanpur?
IIT Kanpur is a premier engineering college offering top notch education and placement opportunities to its students from every branch of engineering. Electrical Engineering is a much-preferred branch among engineering students and IIT Kanpur offers the best placements for this branch.
- The branch has a 100% placement percentage of month UG and PG a students
- UG students tend to go for non-core companies because of the lucrative pay offered by many companies
- PG students on the other hand are more skilled and experienced and thus opt for core jobs. Even core companies prefer MTech students to BTech students
- Due to better opportunities in non-core industries, UG students end up with better packages and roles than PG students.
- PG students too aren’t very unlucky and most of them end up with a packages higher than INR 15 LPA. The usual range is 10-15, with very few only those who get below 10 LPA.
All in all, if you are planning to take EE from IIT Kanpur, you can rest assured at least in terms of placements!
Can someone who has opted for a branch change in IIT Kanpur share their experience?
My brother shared his branch change experience which wasn’t as difficult as people claim it to be. You did require more than average efforts and were challenging but not impossible. He was able to manage it by completing his assignments regularly and being focused in class. Your goal has to be to get a high CPI by being consistent with your studies.
At IIT Kanpur, you can either have a fun-filled college life experience or you can excel in academics, the choice is yours. It’s all about priorities. I know many nerds who worked day and night and eventually got CPI 10 after their first year. It’s all about your priorities. Basically, a 9+ CPI is not that difficult to achieve and a 10 requires some extra effort.
However, uncertainties always happen, and depending solely on branch change is not a wise decision.
Which one is a better option: 5 year BTech + MTech in CSE in IIT Delhi or 4 year BTech in CSE in IIT Kanpur?
Both 5-year BTech + MTech in CSE in IIT Delhi and 4-year BTech in CSE in IIT Kanpur are great options for the students to pursue. However, it depends on the choice of the students which course they want to opt for in their career
- 4-year BTech in CSE at IIT Kanpur is well recognized in India for its excellent curriculum and research facilities.
- The cut-off for a 4-year BTech in CSE at IIT Kanpur is 215 in 2023 and 236 in 2022.
- The placement for Btech in CSE is excellent, with the highest package being 1.9 CPA.
- Top companies like Goldman Sachs, Reliance, ICICI Bank, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments participate in the placement.
