Which is a better option, IT IIEST Shibpur or CSE at IEM?
Here is some information to assist you in choice-making-
Snapdeal, Amazon, Google, etc. visit IIEST Shibpur and offer equal placement opportunities to both IT and CSE students. My roommate from IT got into Snapdeal through campus placement.
IEM isn’t a well-known college. It is a local college unlike IIEST, which is an institute of national importance. The campus size of IEM is very small. Big companies don’t usually visit small colleges like IEM.
The college tag has a value of its own. Besides, the opportunities and exposure offered by IIEST are immense.
Thus, I would recommend you opt for IT at IIEST Shibpur.
What would be better option for me: ECE at NIT Durgapur or a Bachelor's of Technology/Master's of Technology dual degree at IIEST, Shibpur?
I did my dual degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIEST. I will list down the comparison points between an ECE from NIT Dgp and a DD (Aerospace Engineering) from IIEST-
- Placement opportunities are much brighter for ECE in India. This is because there are very few core companies for Aerospace Engineers over here.
- IT companies prefer ECE students over Aerospace students. Also, R&D jobs are difficult to grab for B.Tech/DD students.
- Both are Tier 2 colleges and offer almost the same facilities. JU has better facilities than both of them.
- A dual degree from IIEST isn’t a great option. Rather, try to pursue your PG from a TIER-1 college.
- If you do good research work in your B.Tech, you’ll have better chances of pursuing your Masters from a Tier-1 college/ foreign university.
Try to figure out what interests you more. My personal recommendation is that you pursue B.Tech ECE from NIT Durgapur.
What are the points that a student knows before taking admission to IIEST Shibpur?
The first thing that you should note is that IIEST offers a dual degree program. It's a 5-year M.Tech program and not the conventional 4-year program.
- Be clear of what your goals are and choose your friend circle according to it. For Example, if you love programming then find a senior who is doing coding and learn from his experience.
- Make it clear in your mind that CGPA matters the most. It is not easy to score marks in Shibpur and hence you have to study a lot.
- Be a team player. There are so many societies in the college and you SHOULD join them. This would make you aware of what's happening around you, help you build connections.
- Don't be worried about Ragging, It doesn't exist.
- Studies are not that easy and lectures are sometimes boring but you have to self-study and also manage time for honing your skills.
- Shibpur is not as famous across the nation as it is in West Bengal.
- It's the 2nd oldest college in the nation and hence has a vast alumni network.
- Upon becoming IIEST, the vibes in the college would change completely. There would be more budget for everything and confidence fo student would also increase. The quality of education would increase
- Placement opportunities at IIEST are not that great but the situation should improve in the near future.
Don't lose focus, try to stay motivated and find like-minded people.
Is IIEST Shibpur better than average NITs like Kurukshetra, Jaipur, Bhopal, Surat and Patna for pursuing an M.Tech?
Yes, IIEST Shibpur is considered better than average NITs like Kurukshetra, Jaipur, Bhopal, Surat, and Patna for pursuing M.Tech. The learning opportunities and resources offered are better. The project works are considerably better. At IIEST Shibpur, you will get to do a real-time case project. This will make your profile stand out. The faculties are also better in comparison.
Which is better for an M.Tech, IIEST (Shivpur), Jadavpur University, NIT (Durgapur) or NIR (Rourkela)?
Choosing one institute between IIEST, NIT Durgapur and NIT Rourkela depends on your interests and preferences. If you want to spend your college life conducting cutting-edge research and making projects, IIEST is the one for you. But if you want an active campus life with a lot of fun activities going on and an average workload, then choose one between Durgapur and NIT Rourkela.
Personally, I will recommend you to join NIT Rourkela as it’s among the top 5 NITs. Its campus is second only to IIT KGP, one of the largest in the country. It has an active club culture so you can also pursue your passions alongside your academics.

- Electronics as a specialization has got a booming market, which is demanded to create a lot of jobs presently.
- IIEST, becoming accredited with central status i.e Institute of National Importance, receives central government funding, as compared to state government funding for Jadavpur University. Therefore the infrastructure of IIEST is way better than Jadavpur University.
- IIEST now admits students from all over India, so you will get to interact with students from all over the country. This will boost your learning experience a lot.
Overall, if you need to decide between the given two choices then you should opt for Electronics at IIEST.

How good is IIEST Shibpur?
I have been studying at IIEST Shibpur for a year. Here are some things I can tell you about my college from personal experience-
- Infrastructure- The college has good labs and internet facilities. The campus roads are in a good condition, and the number of hostels has increased.
- Academics- Most of the faculty members are supportive. They encourage research and innovation. IIEST has been signing MOU’s with various industries and educational institutions. It gets decent funding from the central government for various research projects. It invites eminent personalities from various fields to enlighten the students.
- Placements- IIEST is performing decently well in placements and rankings.
IIEST Shibpur is performing well in every aspect, and it is growing continuously. Long gone are the days when the institute was heavily influenced by political forces. At present, it is focused on delivering good academics, placements and research opportunities for its students.
Which is better, NIT DGP or IIEST Shibpur?
If you consider the institutional ranks, then IIEST is always ahead of most of the NITs in India. Besides, the core branch and its placement statistics are also better in IIEST.
But in the case of IT and CSE, NIT Durgapur grasps a better position than IIEST. However, IIEST is not so behind, and there is a chance that IIEST will surpass its positions in the next 3 years for the subjects CSE and IT. It can be mentioned that the faculties of IIEST are also better than all of the NITs.

If you are planning for higher studies, then IIEST Shibpur would be a better choice. You will be associated with great professors as well as students from not only India but abroad as well.
However, if you are not getting your desired subject in IIEST, you could go for NIT DGP.
Which is better for competitive programming: Jadavpur University or IIEST, Shibpur?
Any college can be good for competitive programming. It all relies on you to educate yourself, to learn new strategies, and to spend hours coding.
- Anudeep Nekkanti is one such example. He was recruited by Google and qualified for ACM ICPC world finals. If you look at the name of his college, it's not one of those elite ones.
- There was no competitive programming pattern in BESU/IIEST until recently. But many students have taken competitive programming platforms such as Codechef and HackerRank over the last few years.
- You can search the Codechef Rating System site to verify it for yourself. You get a college-wise database of the number of students actively engaged in competitive coding and their results using this platform.
Lastly, don't support the myth that the only way to prove yourself as a coder is competitive programming. There are other coding fields as well. In this sense, do not consider that there was no "real coder" in IIEST because there was no competitive coding pattern previously in IIEST (BESU back then).
Some of the alumni of the institute are working in top companies in India and overseas and have never been interested in competitive coding.
