Which IIT is better for mechanical engineering, IIT Jodhpur or IIT Dhanbad?

IIT Dhanbad is best for pursuing mechanical engineering. It provides students with top-notch academic resources and amenities. Additionally, the placements are fairly decent. Every year, between 70 and 80 percent of students in the mechanical stream get placed. The former is better IIT Dhanbad was established in 1926 whereas IIT Jodhpur came in 2008. In terms of placement, faculty, ranking, and academic excellence IIT Dhanbad stays in the upper hand for pursuing mechanical engineering than IIT Jodhpur. The reasons for choosing IIT Dhanbad are as follows:

  • Ranking and reputation: IIT Dhanbad was rated 17th among the finest engineering schools in the country in 2023, which is a reflection of the school's academic performance, resources, faculty depth, etc.
  • Faculty : All of the faculty members are intelligent and welcoming. They are extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Their course syllabus is appropriate for students who are interested in working in the core industry in the future.
  •  Placement: About 70-80% of students are accepted for campus job placement in IIT Dhanbad. The average package ranges between INR 16-17 LPA and the highest package is around INR 56 LPA.
  • Alumni Network: At IITs, there is a high prevalence of robust alumni networks, which may be helpful for networking, job placements, and internships. For Mechanical Engineering, IIT Dhanbad is better. It offers excellent academic resources and facilities to students. The placements are pretty good as well. Each year around 70-80% of students from the Mechanical branch get placed. The highest CTC offered to the students of the branch is around INR 23 LPA. Companies such as L&T, Tata Steel, Coal India Limited, etc. take part in IIT Dhanbad placements.

I have few friends in IIT Jodhpur. From them, I heard good things about the Mechanical Engineering branch at the institute. Studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur will be a great learning opportunity for you. You can develop many new skills. The course is also quite engaging. I know many students who had the opportunity to change their branch to CSE but choose to stay in Mechanical. In fact, Mechanical is the best branch at IIT Jodhpur. 

Here are some highlights about the department.

Faculty:

There’s no faculty crunch. The department has many talented faculties with specialization from various fields of Mechanical. The faculty members have PhDs from prestigious universities from India and abroad.

Laboratories:

The departmental lab is well-equipped with state-of-art machines.

Extra-curricular:

Over the past years, students have been performing quite well at SAE BAJA.

Industry Immersion Program:

IIT Jodhpur has a great industry interface. Students get to do internships in core Mechanical corporation right from the 1st semester. Some of the companies involved in the program are as follows.
