Which is best to pursue an MTech in ECE: IIT Bombay or IISC Bangalore?
I have a friend who is pursuing M.tech in Electronic systems engineering at IISc and a cousin who is pursuing M.tech at IITB too. So, I seem to be in the best position to compare IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore.
- Academic environment: IISc has a rich research culture and you will find both faculty and students actively involved in dynamic research projects. A total of 42 departments offer rigorous courses that challenge the researcher within you. IISc also provides excellent opportunities to pursue any interdisciplinary field like microbiology, neuroscience, nanoscience, astronomy, genetics, etc. IIT Bombay on the other hand has a laid-back culture and curriculum that is more placement-oriented. Only passionate students are motivated enough to involve in research activities.
- Placement: IIT Bombay has diverse companies visiting for placements while IISc usually has only core companies. Moreover, the students applying for placements are at IIT Bombay than IISc because IISc students prefer higher studies or research. So we can say that IIT Bombay has a more active placement cell than IISc.
- Extra-Curriculars: IIT Bombay is known for its vibrant campus life and huge events that are organized to give the students a break from academics. IISc is a bit lacking in this aspect as its sole focus is on in-depth research. However, it does have all basic modes of refreshments like Hockey, Football, Archery, Swimming, and cultural societies for Drama, Music, Photography, and Literary
- Higher Studies: Although both IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore have excellent prospects and opportunities for higher studies, it no brainer that IISc Bangalore will encourage you more for higher studies, and a Ph.D. from IISc is an excellent choice.
Ultimately, the final decision depends on what your prospects are and what you expect from your college life. If your main goal is to pursue full-scale research then IISc is the best place for you but if you also want to experience a great campus life and get placed then IIT Bombay will serve you better.
How is an MTech in communication engineering at NIT Trichy?
NIT Trichy has great placements for branches like CSE and ECE. Most of the recruiting companies give preference to B.Tech students rather than M.Tech. But as far as Communications Engineering is concerned, you will be allowed to appear for placement drives held by semiconductor companies with B.Tech students.
There are quite a few companies that prefer Communications students over VLSI. Many students end up being placed in dream semiconductor companies. Out of say, 35 students, only 1 or 2 are not placed. The placements are definitely improving over the years.
It is advisable to have basic coding knowledge at least along with your core subject. That way, you will definitely be able to do well.
What is the placement scenario of ECE M.Tech at IIT Roorkee?
There are many ECE branches that have great placements whereas some branches have below-average placements. So placements too depend on the nature of the branch rather than the department.
Communication
- Almost all students get placed
- Top Recruiters include Qualcomm, Intel, Cisco, and Cummins India Limited
- The average CTC ranges between 13-15 LPA
VLSI
- The placements for this branch of ECE are the best
- Many reputed firms like Texas, Qualcomm, and Analog Devices visit the campus for placements
RF and Microwave
- The same companies that hire students from VLSI and Communications, hire a handful of students from this branch as well
System and Control
- The placements are decent
- Some recruiters include Eaton, TATA, Intel
How was your interview experience at IIIT Hyderabad for MS ECE?
I had applied for the MS ECE at IIIT Hyderabad as I was interested in Robotics research. Around 22 candidates, including me, were scheduled for an interview that day and a few were absent.
I was interviewed at 4:30 pm. A total of 4 professors interviewed us. The professors first asked me if I sat for GATE and my performance in it. Then I was asked if I had applied for other colleges. When I told them that I rejected NIT Goa because of not so good placements over there, they asked me if I was interested in placements. To this I replied that I was not that interested in placements and my plan was to go into research.
Then they asked me about the field in which I wanted to do my research. I replied that I was interested in Robotics. I supported my answer by saying that I have done my final year project in robotics and worked in the automation department of Godrej. I was then asked what I would want to improve at my company. After this basic question-answer series, another professor of IIIT Hyderabad, who was into Robotics research, joined the panel. He went through my final year project report.
Meanwhile, the panel asked me about my strong subjects and the topics that I was well-versed in. I was asked to write equations and draw graphs on a blackboard and was questioned on the topics that I had selected. I chose to be questioned on Analog and Digital Communications, except the NOISE part.
The interview went for 25 minutes. The Robotics professor did not ask any questions and simply reviewed my project report. Overall, the interview experience was great and I cleared it and secured admission into IIIT Hyderabad.
Is IIT Dhanbad good for an M.Tech in the ECE department?
The two deciding factors in this case are the studies and placements. IIT Dhanbad offers M.Tech ECE in VLSI, RF and Microwave Engineering, Communications, and Photonics. RF and Microwave Engineering is a good but difficult option.
The faculty for VLSI and Communications is good. However, the Photonics faculty is not good at all. 2-3 subjects and labs are common for all ECE students. However, the curriculum for RF and Microwave is entirely different from the other three.
The placement scenario for ECE isn’t good. Very few students are placed from the department, that too in non-core jobs. Those who are well-versed in programming get easily placed in IT firms.
Core companies like Texas, Intel, Amdocs, etc. visit the campus for recruitment. However, they recruit very few students (sometimes none) from the department. Some students do secure internships at firms like Intel. But for final placements, they have to undergo screening once again. The placements are nil in RF. But some universities visit the campus seeking Assistant Professors. They offer good starting packages.
If you get VLSI at NIT Surathkal/Trichy/Warangal, choose that over IIT Dhanbad. The placement for VLSI is very good at these colleges. As for IIT Dhanbad, it offers a very decent M.Tech ECE. The main advantage in this case is the ‘IIT’ tag.
What is some insight into IIIT Hyderabad? How is the ECE M. Tech. interview?
Here are some highlights pertaining to the quality of education at IIIT Hyderabad
- IIIT Hyderabad attracts some of the top JEE rankers so the quality of the crowd is somewhat similar to top IITs.
- The course is industry relevant and well-tailored as per recent trends. It prepares you well for the industry.
- Thetheoritical concepts are delivered through a practical approach and this ensures the polishing of the student's skills.
- A number of active cultural clubs make your campus life vibrant and give you a break from academics.
- IIIT Hyderabad expands your knowledge base and helps you inculcate such soft skills that help you throughout your life in shaping your career.
One of my relatives shared his interview experience and it will help you get an idea of the level of difficulty and nature of questions asked. Initially, you will be asked to talk about yourself and your background. The interviewers evaluate your
- Logical thinking skills through simple puzzles.
- Your knowledge of the ECE subjects
- Your willingness to join the institute
Overall, the interview is easy and also gives you an idea to choose between MS and MTech.
How is MNIT Jaipur for an M.Tech in the ECE branch and specialization ECE? Are there any pros and cons?
MNIT Jaipur ECE branch is highly regarded for its good quality education and research opportunities. MNIT Jaipur offers four specializations under the ECE branch namely:
- VLSI Design
- Embedded System
- Wireless and Optical Communication (WOC)
- Electronics and Communication
All the above branches are equally good in terms of curriculum and job opportunities so your preference and inclination that should determine the right one for you. All the branches are good in themselves so I would suggest going for your interest. This branch is also a decent choice if you want to prepare for competitive exams as the workload is less and there is a lot of free time.
Here are a few pros and cons of the institute that will help you further decide:
Pros:
- An environment conducive to both academics and extracurricular activities.
- It’s the best option if you are willing to prepare for competitive exam
- An excellent college for presenting papers so its Ph.D. program is highly valuable.
- The professors are highly approachable and experienced.
- MNIT Jaipur has a well-stocked library even better than some IITs.
Cons:
- The placement scenario isn't on par with IITs yet. Moreover, most companies prefer BTech students to MTech students so you have to be among the toppers to get a decent package.
- The lab facilities are poor so the level of research conducted is also average.
- The institute follows the Biometric attendance system
Ultimately, makes a wise decision after weighing the pros and cons.
How is the MTech ECE placement from IIT Kharagpur?
MTech placements for the ECE branch at IIT Kharagpur depend a lot on your specialization.
Those under VLSI and VIPES get placed with great packages and there are almost cent percent placements for them. VLSI students are usually offered core jobs in contrast to VIPES which offers both core and non-core jobs. There are a lot of software profiles offered to VIPES students.
Communication also has decent placements but not the same certainty as VLSI. Here companies like Qualcomm come for placements and some even are offered software profilers
How is the placements at MNNIT Allahabad for M.Tech in Communication Systems?
First and foremost, best of luck for your M.Tech admissions.
The M.Tech ECE placements are average at MNNIT Allahabad. The placements largely depend upon the expected number of recruitments from visiting companies for a particular year.
Companies like Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Idea Cellular visit the campus with limited job vacancies. Other companies that make M.Tech ECE recruitments from our college include Tejas Networks, Digicomm semiconductors, Eximius, etc. Apart from that, M.Tech ECE students get the opportunity to sit for some software companies as well.
Maintain 9+ CGPA (doing so is easy) and focus more on doing projects using tools like MATLAB, NS-2 and System Vue. By doing so, you’ll increase your chances of getting a good package during the placement season.
Thus, the Communication Systems placements are quite decent at MNNIT, but everything boils down to your individual efforts.
How is telecommunication management mtech course at IIT Delhi?
IIT Delhi Telecommunication Management MTech program is one of the most preferred programs among students with electronics and electrical backgrounds.
No doubt, the workload of this program is extremely high with a plethora of courses. One needs great capabilities to handle the pressure. The Integrated Electronics and Circuits branch is more suitable if all you are interested in is hardware.
Telecommunication Management is a multifaceted program of 3 branches; CS EE and DMS. The curriculum is well structured covering software and hardware topics. The core courses are better in the second year than in the first. You will get knowledge of both core technical as well as telecom management sectors.
With the right set of skills and core knowledge, one can fetch excellent packages. Top recruiters include
