IIT Madras has a great Mechanical Engineering branch. The departmental lab and workshop are well-equipped with cutting-edge instruments. IIT Madras Mechanical dept. has a well-experienced faculty pool. Many faculty members are actively pursuing research projects.

IIT Madras placements are good for Mechanical Engineering. Around 85% of students get placed from the branch. The average CTC received by the students of the branch is around INR 12 LPA.

Due to the growing trends of computers in the country, usually, it is seen that there is no such demand for Mechanical engineering in the private sector. One of my friends is a mechanical engineering graduate. According to him:

  • The only way that you can pursue your career in mechanical engineering is to clear the various government exams to get a job of your satisfaction.
  • Students pursue various courses for programming to become well-known computer engineers. They get placed in the prestigious companies in the country.
  • Apart from academics, these companies are much more inclined towards the TopCoder and GitHub profile of the candidate. This gives them an edge apart from others.
Categories Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras
Course Fee 4.02lakh
Highest CTC 18 LPA
Average CTC 8-9 LPA
Recruiting Companies TCS, Tech Mahindra, DE Shaw, Goldman Sachs, etc.

So according to the overall placements provided to the students pursuing engineering in IIT Madras will be a good option. But Mechanical Engineering may have different results.

It is known that with fast-moving technology, the value of mechanical engineering has been somewhat degraded, especially in the private sector. So pursuing mechanical engineering is really not worth it in this computer age.
