Here is some strong advice for those who are conscious about their CGPA to get placed in a top firm. The kind of job and package you are offered depends on your skills and talents and not your CGPA or the institute you belong to. Many intelligent students secure good packages from average institutes while average students get low packages even from top colleges.

Also, if you are investing your entire energy and efforts in job hunting, you won’t be able to enjoy the process of studying for your favorite branch. If you aren’t planning to become an entrepreneur or go for higher studies, then you will have to focus on your CGPA to get placed with a decent package. That being said, a CGPA >=8 is considered decent by many companies at least for shortlisting in the written round. Your CGPA is not much of value if you have excellent coding skills. So look at the bigger picture and stop focusing on CGPA only!

B.Tech from National Institutes of Technology (2020)

As per the IIT BHU placement trends, big companies like Microsoft and Facebook don’t care much about CGPA. These companies select students based on their coding skills. They have a crisp and straightforward procedure for interviews. If you can pass the coding tests and answer the questions, you will be hired.

Companies like DE Shaw, Adobe, Arista, etc. give weightage to CGPA. But if you are good at coding, you can get selected, even with a low CGPA.

So, if your coding skills are on point, you don’t need to worry about placements.

Rather than placements, CGPA matters more at the time of internships. Many companies don’t shortlist students with lower CGPA. So, try to keep your CGPA above 8.

IIT BHU has been ranked 11th among the best engineering colleges in India by NIRF 2020. B.Tech CSE is one of the most sought courses among students aspiring for IIT BHU. The placement scenario at IIT BHU is pretty good and CGPA plays an important role in landing at your dream companies.

Placement statistics:

  • Placement records of the CSE department at IIT BHU are amazing. With 100% placement from the past few years, the average CTC offered for CSE dual degree graduates is 25LPA.

  • 52 companies participated in the process of recruitment offering overall 762 job offers.

  • Lead recruiters from the past few years include Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Google, ITC.

  • The highest domestic CTC offered at IIT BHU in 2020 was 1.06 CrPA while the highest international package was 1.59 CrPA for CSE graduates.

  • 204 students availed of the summer internship opportunities through the Institute with an average stipend of 80,000.

CGPA requirements:

  • To begin with, each company sets a CGPA cutoff to be eligible to sit in their placement in order to screen off the crowd. Usually, this cutoff lies around 6.5 to 7.0.

  • A CGPA of 8 and above is generally considered as the safer CGPA.

  • If your CGPA is above 8.5 you will be clearly eligible to sit for pretty much any company unless it's branch restricted.

  • Cognizant being a mass recruiting company offers students with top 10 CGPA in their respective departments a direct entry into the PI round. This clearly shows the value of your CGPA in this competitive world.

  • Core companies usually have a slightly higher CGPA cutoff. 8.5 was the CGPA cutoff by Oracle U.S.A profile.

  • Non- core companies will expect a CGPA around 7.5 with good PORs, and extracurricular interests.

To conclude, if your dream is to get placed in core companies 8.5-9.0 CGPA is required at IIT BHU or any other IITs in general. Even if you want to pursue a Ph.D. of MS, CGPA around 9 or above is preferred along with your involvement in publishing a few research papers.
