Every coin has two sides and likewise, every institute has its strengths and weaknesses. BIT Mesra has a number of flaws pertaining to its education and culture. I have listed a few

  • One of the biggest cons of this institute is that students aren’t encouraged or inclined towards research and innovations at all. All they care about is getting a decent GOA and eventually a job.
  • The faculty is least interested in conducting quality research and discovery. They just conduct monotonous classes for the sake of it just to earn money.
  • The institute has excellent infrastructure but its utility is poor. There are supercomputers and computational tools, however, they aren’t used to the fullest to bring big achievements.
  • Even in this age and era, students are judged on the basis of personal relationships, attendance count; and GPA.
  • The focus on securing a high GPA has definitely affected the quality of education and resulted in a rat race for placements.

I really hope the institute makes amendments and brings about a massive research culture soon!

There are quite a few drawbacks when it comes to BIT Mesra. Let me elaborate further on the same for you:

  • You will probably not have any campus life in the evening. All the people from the college will go back by 8 pm and you will probably not see anyone walking on the roads at all.
  • If you compare the same thing to an IIT, you will see that their campus is buzzing after hours. There’s usually someone who is playing the guitar and students interacting with each other.

In my opinion, you can’t expect to share ideas or build an impact without this kind of social interaction.

  • If you are a girl on campus, you will be put through quite a few sexist rules. All through the four years, you will be made to live on a twin-sharing basis in a room meant for single occupancy.
  • You will have to return to your hostel by 8 pm and give a roll call, which is much like a prisoner count. But, you can leave your room during curfew hours ( 8 pm to 6 am). The administration really needs to step up its security measures and lighting around the campus.
  • You will also realize that the administration is very stubborn with obtuse professors and a lot of internal politics. There is a severe lack of student constitution. The administration is not ready to make the required changes. Along with this, many students are not ready to take the initiative to make amends for this.

From my friend’s experience, the campus needs better security measures, more medical stores, a policy that regulated food prices (the canteens can be expensive), and a campaign to open the lawns.
